  • OU Medical Center offers advanced equipment to diagnose sleep disorders. Both adult and pediatric patients are seen at The Children's Hospital in Oklahoma City. The Sleep Disorders Center is unique to the state and region, in the variety and complexity of patients doctors diagnose and treat -especially among the neonates and children. Adult patients in the Sleep Disorders Center may come in for issues such as snoring, un-restorative sleep, daytime sleepiness or complaints from their bed partner. Children seen in the Sleep Disorders Center might have problems with hyperactivity, snoring or restless sleep.
    Advanced Technology
The Sleep Disorders Center is one of only a few centers, nationwide, where Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is provided to children who require it.
"It involves wearing a mask that goes over the nose and pressure is delivered in order to eliminate apneas, snoring, desaturations, and arousals," said Kris Sekar, M.D., Pediatric Medical Director. "To have a child use this machine at night was thought to be impossible. However, we have been somewhat successful. Many times, if CPAP is not possible, a tracheotomy is the next treatment option, so this provides motivation. We continue to work towards success as it is important that children as well as adults achieve a restful night's sleep."
In addition, new beds in the Sleep Disorders Center utilize Sandman equipment. According to Dr. Sekar, it is the most advanced sleep evaluation technology and is interfaced to obtain all parameters needed to evaluate patient. This provides the ultimate in speed, flexibility, accuracy and reliability available for sleep study recording.
