African drums have evidence of drumming dating back as far as 500 AD. The earliest drums were often made from natural materials such as hollowed-out logs, animal skins, and gourds. Many credit the Mandinka people for creating the drum in West Africa around 1300 B.C. The Middle Kingdom saw the emergence of rudimentary drums in Egypt, fashioned from the hollows of tree trunks. Around 1750 B.C.E., drums shaped like goblets and pots, covered with skin with the bottom open, were introduced from the Palestinian region. Another instrument made of clay is the drum, and we find it in China between 4000 and 2000 BC. By 1400 BC bronze and wood drums take over in the archaeological records.
