Marcus thinks Chloe's love is what makes Lucifer mortal and wanted that to work for him too. OMG I can't wait for you to see Tom's "Netflix bod", I think you will approve! :-)

Maze's intention was to keep Lucifer distracted while Pierce made Chloe fall in love with him.
This episode had some fantastic scenes, the scene in the interrogation room between Lucifer and Chloe, Lucifer's desperation to see Chloe fall for Pierce, luckily she did not get to say that she loved him.
the scene of Lucifer with the murderer, when Lucifer realizes that Maze and Pierce were distracting him to get him away from Chloe.
and finally Lucifer's anger at Cain for hurting Chloe.
Remember that episodes 25 and 26 are bonuses, and do not have to do with the plot of S3. S3 ends in episode 24.

Pierce's theory was that the reason Lucifer was vulnerable around Chloe, was that Chloe loved Lucifer. So Pierce figured if he could get Chloe to fall in love with him, he'd become vulnerable and could be killed.
However there is a lot of debate on whether or not the Mark was removed because Chloe loves him or if it was because Pierce/Caine finally cared about someone the more than himself.

If I remember correctly, the plan hatched by Maze and Pierce is for Pierce to get Chloe to fall for him so that his mark would be removed and he could die. At least, that's what Pierce is thinking. Then Maze would kill Pierce, and somehow it comes out that they expected to frame Lucifer for Pierce's murder. Lucifer would then have to go on the run and leave LA, blowing up his life there. And then he would be willing to return to Hell, and Maze would get to go back with him. Again, that's what Maze thinks.
But when Chloe is about to say she loves Pierce, he finds he can't go through with hurting her like that. Lucifer finds Chloe crying and is angry that Pierce has hurt her, and goes after Pierce. It's possible he might have killed Pierce because he was in a rage, but they then they see that the mark is gone. And that stops everything in that moment at the end of this episode. But yes, I agree, it was confusing the first time I saw it as well.

At this point I think Cain/Pierce started to doubt himself or actually he was surprised to find he has real feeling for the first time in eons.
The real question is why is his mark gone?
