Hey everyone I just wanted to point out that approximately around the timestamp of 2:30 I circled the wrong Lexington on the US map, I circled Lexington in Kentucky (neighbouring state) instead of Lexington in Virginia. My sincere apologies I must have been confused and didn't mark it properly, in the meantime you've let me know that there's plenty of Lexingtons around the US so given that I'm particularly glad I wasn't wasn't very far from the right place! (joking)
I love Sally Mann and have supported her for eons...against narrow minded critics and others I have come in contact with. I had the fortune to have met with her mentor, Mark Osterman from the George Eastman Museum learning about miniature wet plate collodion plates having only a background in film and negative development. I want to point out that Sally's family is from that area in Virginia and she finds a special bond with her heritage and the south. To stay at home and photograph it deeply gives us her way of seeing and her love of it all is evident. Thank you for a short overview of her images! She is truly a wonderful artist.
Sally Mann’s photography is truly amazing. Your voice and your narrative in presenting this important artist is a form of poetic art in of itself. I appreciate everything you do.
Thanks to you, I just spent a wonderful moment with Sally Mann’s photos. Your voice and words helped me reflect upon my own photography while watching. Thank you for this too. Take care of yourself.
Sally Mann was one of the few photographers that moved me at a time when I had very little interest in photography. Her images speak immediately to the human soul and explore the many mysteries of the human embodied experience
Mann's work is intimate and feels ethereal, it clearly is the eye of a proud mother watching her family develop. I loved this video and I'm glad her work won't fade!
Great video. I love Sally Mann’s work and have followed her for years. Her work wasn’t always something I appreciated but for some reason I kept going back to it. The Poe quote is perfect.
I find how completely ignorant I am when you show some of your videos because I’ve never seen or heard of Ms. Mann’s work. But I do now and will find out as much as I can. I love B&W and the stark realism in her images!!!!! She seems to have captured an era and place that many people have never seen or even thought about. Thank you Ms. Hopper for another great opportunity for me to learn!!!!!
Hey Terry! Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! I appreciate it and I’m glad you were able to meet Sally Mann’s work it’s enriching for sure! Wishing you all the very best Terry!
Thank you for inviting us to learn from the incredible work of Sally Mann! She captures southern life in a variety of settings with fidelity and amazing artistry.
Hi Tatiana. The production quality of your videos, and you perspective and research are so well done. I was drawn most to her images of Virginia and Georgia, as well as the outdoor and shots in nature. Her black and white images are almost haunting. Thank you for all of your hard work! Stay safe! ✌️🌹
Thank you so much for your kind words Joe! I honestly do feel that's the word I would associate with her photography, more than anything, haunting, I guess it's. really a perfect combination of media with imagery or ideas she wants to touch on. Thank you for watching and supporting, as always it means a lot! Stay safe and take care!
Thank you Tatiana. I too appreciate Sally Mann’s work. She was a creator with a unique approach, using vintage equipment and technique. I consider her a master. Bless you for appreciating her work also.
I have always loved Sally Mann`s work, I think using large format photography as an expressive tool is such a beautiful means of interpretation. It slows the photographer right down to think about what they are doing and possibly interact with there subject.
@@TatianaHopper I always look forward to your new videos. They are very educational and really takes learning photography into a different level! Thank you for creating these videos.
The fantastic world of Shally Mann is beyond the Time and the Space! Of course this magic world is beyond the Lexington! Congratulation Tatiana Hopper for your great art film.
Thank you, Tatiana. This was a good photographer to talk about. I have spent a lot of time with her photos, especially the landscapes. I actually get a feeling of peace from them. It is similar to work I enjoy doing. I feel like the atmosphere in her black and white photos calls me to embrace my past, let go of challenges that I don't have any control of, and find peace in solitude. Thank you for all your hard work in putting these videos together. Of all the photographers I follow, I most enjoy your work.
Mann, along with Mapplethorp have had great influence on my photography, not so much for the subjects but for the incredably beautiful use of B&W to convey a scene that would have been silly in color.
the combination of S.Mann's images and Nick Drake's haunting guitar is inspiring , I appreciate your content T.Hopper, specially because it feels like an invitation for conversation
Thank you Ivo and in a way it is, I love people to share their thoughts and express their emotions and opinions about what they have watched. Wether they connect or no. So we can all learn with each other! :)
Great video , Sally could be listed as my all time favorite photographer. Her work is so full, beyond what is right in front of our eyes. I adore her work with her children as well as the work that followed , all still having that certain something that makes a big impact on me!
I've been a fan of Mann for decades. Her ability to show spontaneity, with a camera that would stop most in their tracks is absolutely a testament to her art, vision and craftsmanship. I had the honor of meeting Ms Mann years ago at a lecture. She's so impressive. I remember the controversy of her book on her family. It was an unfortunate opinion of an amazing artist.
Really loving your work here, the way you present gently each artist to us, with a descriptions that actually make us wonder about so many things. Thank you!
I love her work! It is so different! Her portraits and views of her children are unique! I am of the school our bodies are beautiful.Magnificent! Bravo, great RUclips.
your videos are so carefully considered, well researched, and wonderfully produced! I've stumbled upon your videos from time to time and I'm never disappointed. Thanks so much for the care you put into your work. Bravo!
Thank you for yet another gem! You have presented a unique perspective on the photographic eye and I am forever grateful having discovered your channel.
Perhaps yes, it was complicated to make this video alone due to the contents of her work not being really something I can display on RUclips (that’s why some of her more popular images weren’t included in the video) and it took several days to get it checked and reviewed so that put me off a little bit because I don’t the channel’s performance to be affected by restrictions or even strikes. We shall see! :)
I absolutely love this channel. Your work and research is amazing and a breath of fresh air, bringing back the main reason why we are photographers/creators. Thank you!!!
An incredible artist and person. I built her first wet-plate collodion back for that trusty 8x10 camera and in the process had some delightful conversations with her.
Thanks for putting this together. Mann was one of the many photographers I studied while getting my BFA in photography during the late 1990's. I always enjoyed her work, especially the somewhat haunting images of her children. Cheers!
Well done Tatiana, I always admired Mann's work mainly her landscape images, as for me living in the south most of my life I can relate to many of those historic places she visited.
Thanks Rich! I actually have a fondness for the south ever since I read some southern gothic novels that’s I feel what made me curious about Mann’s work ages ago. I don’t know why it took me this long to share it on the channel but well better late than never, stay safe Rich 🫶🏻
Nice. And nice to see Sally Mann's name come up. She saw beauty all around her...The girl in the water surrounded by the floating, aura of hair is stunning----as are many others.
Hello Tatiana!! Wow...just...wow. Such striking imagery!! Thank you for bringing another artist's work to our attention....as usual, very educational and inspiring! I hope all is well with you, keep shooting and looking forward to your next presentation!! CC
As you always do, this is an articulate and thoughtful video about a photographer I truly love. I was recently in the Jackson Gallery in Atlanta and I got to look through a portfolio of her more recent work. It was stunning, to say the least.
Great job Tatiana! I first discovered Sally Mann's work at a bookstore back in the '90s. As I opened her book and started leafing through the pages, I was mesmerized. Knowing that she was the mother of the kids who appeared in the images, it never occurred to me that she might be sexualizing her children. That is not until years later when I heard she ran into trouble. At that point, I revisited some of her work and could see how it would be disturbing to some people. Love the artful approach you took in producing this video. It does her work justice.
Thank you so much Scott! I had a similar experience, see I didn’t know about the controversy, I only knew some of her images. So I gathered as many as possible and looked at them as I always do before a video and after learning about the criticism I went back to look at it again and I realised same as you why some could find it upsetting. Thank you for watching!

@@TatianaHopper I saw that others had made the same comment and edited mine. Kentucky was actually once a part of Virginia. Your videos are just excellent. Thank you.
What I think of Sally Mann's work?! I think it is the work of one of the most important photographers of the 20's century! Deep, beautiful, impactful and lasting... what ever was said about it otherwise is fear of reality and abstraction, fear of depth, feelings and art!
What do I think of this video? I think it is a thoughtful and excellent assessment and opinion of this great artist and a very well produced video overall. One of your best Tatiana. Imagine hefting those heavy 10x8's around and producing work like this! This channel goes from strength to strength.
This was great! Very inspiring, I didn’t know much about her work but I think you’re right everyone is going to have their ideals on what is right and wrong, parenting etc… what to me is art to others might be offensive or something else. Damien Hurst is another example!
Thank you so much, yes Damien Hurst, I confess I don't know much of his work but yes I would agree it borders the question of is it really art? I All the best!
I have got to admit that I am challenged by Mann's work. Mostly in a good way and mostly about the way she documented her children's childhood. The challenge is on moral grounds but the question of when does a snapshot of kids being kids become art? Is it a form of "Found Art", or is it there as a shock factor in order to gain an interaction with her audience? Everytime I think I have an answer I can live with I change my mind, or gain a new perspective. Like I said, I find the work very challenging. On a side note: have you thought of curating the essays you publish here and putting them in a book? Just listening to the words alone without the images is enough to invoke the spirit of the photographer's work. That is a difficult thing to do and you do it so well. Well done on the great work and keep it going. I for one look forward to hearing what you have to say.
Very interesting artist / photographer. I had never heard of her but like a lot of her images. Very haunting, down to earth and surreal all at the same time somehow.
People seem to speak of the nudes of her children more than anything else . But I believe that this represents a very very small part of her overall work. And I apologize for contradicting one of the other people who have left comments but I think calling her work “ sexualizing “ her children is a major over statement. I don’t think that was the intent at all. I think it’s very much secondary to the images themselves. I think an interesting image is the single goal . But in any case, always happy when a new post comes on to your feed T.H. - thanks
In university we talked about the difference between male and female photography. As example we used sally mann vs. jock sturges. Would be exiting to see a video about that topic. Both bodies of work have a highly conrtoversal side to them .

Love your videos. Thank you for introducing me to Sally Mann
Thank you for watching! Appreciate it 🙏🏻
Extremely interesting and profound - good for you!
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
What do I think of this video? I think it is a thoughtful and excellent assessment and opinion of this great artist and a very well produced video overall. One of your best Tatiana. Imagine hefting those heavy 10x8's around and producing work like this! This channel goes from strength to strength.
Thank you so so much Geoff! I really appreciate your comment and feedback I’m glad you’re enjoying it and on my end here I’ll keep doing my best :)
Thanks for your lecture!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for putting up such an informative video! 🎉
Thank you Silvester! 🫶🏻
thank you so much for your video and thoughts
You very welcome! Thank you for watching!
You summarised it pretty well! Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Loved this
Your videos are alway a pleasure to be followed.
Thank you Pascal!
Very interesting I would like to investigate further! The male and the female gaze!
@@TatianaHopper Maybe I can send you some documents about that if I can find them
