Hey everyone I just wanted to point out that approximately around the timestamp of 2:30 I circled the wrong Lexington on the US map, I circled Lexington in Kentucky (neighbouring state) instead of Lexington in Virginia. My sincere apologies I must have been confused and didn't mark it properly, in the meantime you've let me know that there's plenty of Lexingtons around the US so given that I'm particularly glad I wasn't wasn't very far from the right place! (joking)
I love Sally Mann and have supported her for eons...against narrow minded critics and others I have come in contact with. I had the fortune to have met with her mentor, Mark Osterman from the George Eastman Museum learning about miniature wet plate collodion plates having only a background in film and negative development. I want to point out that Sally's family is from that area in Virginia and she finds a special bond with her heritage and the south. To stay at home and photograph it deeply gives us her way of seeing and her love of it all is evident. Thank you for a short overview of her images! She is truly a wonderful artist.
For my art class I did an essay on Sally Mann. I discovered her work in one of her books in the library. I was hooked on not just her subjects but her processing as well. The Windsor Ruins or "Valentine Windsor" is what really hit me. I used to live in Louisiana and been to a lot plantations in the area. I couldn't believe the Windsor was under my nose the whole time I was living there. I have never heard of or seen photos until at that moment when I saw her image of the Windsor. It was only an hour and half from Baton Rouge. During the pandemic I decided to take trip there from Houston which is 5 hours away. I was an awe of the architecture and the size. I ended up take 3 more trips out there. One was after the snow storm in February 2021 but missed the fresh snow of 4 inches by 24 hours which melted to 1-2 inches. A year later got to bring a model with me and got some unique images which I was happy with which one of them was selected in Texas Photographic Society show in Corpus Christi. I just found out there had been some restoration to the ruins in 2023.I'm glad to photograph the area before the restoration. I was lucky to catch her show at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston on the last day of the last hour. If you can go see her work in person. Me being from the south and looking at her work from the south gave me a different perspective of the area.
Sally Mann’s photography is truly amazing. Your voice and your narrative in presenting this important artist is a form of poetic art in of itself. I appreciate everything you do.
Sally Mann was one of the few photographers that moved me at a time when I had very little interest in photography. Her images speak immediately to the human soul and explore the many mysteries of the human embodied experience
Mann, along with Mapplethorp have had great influence on my photography, not so much for the subjects but for the incredably beautiful use of B&W to convey a scene that would have been silly in color.
The fantastic world of Shally Mann is beyond the Time and the Space! Of course this magic world is beyond the Lexington! Congratulation Tatiana Hopper for your great art film.
Great video. I love Sally Mann’s work and have followed her for years. Her work wasn’t always something I appreciated but for some reason I kept going back to it. The Poe quote is perfect.
Thanks to you, I just spent a wonderful moment with Sally Mann’s photos. Your voice and words helped me reflect upon my own photography while watching. Thank you for this too. Take care of yourself.
Mann's work is intimate and feels ethereal, it clearly is the eye of a proud mother watching her family develop. I loved this video and I'm glad her work won't fade!
Thank you Tatiana. I too appreciate Sally Mann’s work. She was a creator with a unique approach, using vintage equipment and technique. I consider her a master. Bless you for appreciating her work also.
I have always loved Sally Mann`s work, I think using large format photography as an expressive tool is such a beautiful means of interpretation. It slows the photographer right down to think about what they are doing and possibly interact with there subject.
Nice. And nice to see Sally Mann's name come up. She saw beauty all around her...The girl in the water surrounded by the floating, aura of hair is stunning----as are many others.
Thank you for inviting us to learn from the incredible work of Sally Mann! She captures southern life in a variety of settings with fidelity and amazing artistry.
I love her work! It is so different! Her portraits and views of her children are unique! I am of the school our bodies are beautiful.Magnificent! Bravo, great RUclips.
I find how completely ignorant I am when you show some of your videos because I’ve never seen or heard of Ms. Mann’s work. But I do now and will find out as much as I can. I love B&W and the stark realism in her images!!!!! She seems to have captured an era and place that many people have never seen or even thought about. Thank you Ms. Hopper for another great opportunity for me to learn!!!!!
Hey Terry! Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! I appreciate it and I’m glad you were able to meet Sally Mann’s work it’s enriching for sure! Wishing you all the very best Terry!
Thank you, Tatiana. This was a good photographer to talk about. I have spent a lot of time with her photos, especially the landscapes. I actually get a feeling of peace from them. It is similar to work I enjoy doing. I feel like the atmosphere in her black and white photos calls me to embrace my past, let go of challenges that I don't have any control of, and find peace in solitude. Thank you for all your hard work in putting these videos together. Of all the photographers I follow, I most enjoy your work.

Hi Tatiana. The production quality of your videos, and you perspective and research are so well done. I was drawn most to her images of Virginia and Georgia, as well as the outdoor and shots in nature. Her black and white images are almost haunting. Thank you for all of your hard work! Stay safe! ✌️🌹
Thank you so much for your kind words Joe! Thank you for watching and supporting, as always it means a lot! Stay safe and take care!
Well done Tatiana, I always admired Mann's work mainly her landscape images, as for me living in the south most of my life I can relate to many of those historic places she visited.

I've been a fan of Mann for decades. Her ability to show spontaneity, with a camera that would stop most in their tracks is absolutely a testament to her art, vision and craftsmanship. I had the honor of meeting Ms Mann years ago at a lecture. She's so impressive. I remember the controversy of her book on her family. It was an unfortunate opinion of an amazing artist.
Perhaps yes, it was complicated to make this video alone due to the contents of her work not being really something I can display on RUclips (that’s why some of her more popular images weren’t included in the video) and it took several days to get it checked and reviewed so that put me off a little bit because I don’t the channel’s performance to be affected by restrictions or even strikes. Another great video, Tatiana. I'm working on a book project compiling photos of annual family reunions that my stepmom organized, and I feel like after watching this video that Mann's work is of a similar nature. The quality of the filming and depth of research is top level. Looking forward to more videos in the future!
Hello Michael! Thank you so much for the kind words and I’m glad Sally Mann’s photography can serve as an inspiration perhaps as a guiding light for your book which I hope you can finish with much success sounds like a good idea. All the best! ✨
An interesting and somewhat disturbing mini documentary you have done here. You captured the southern #neogothic look of Sally Mann very well, only the photos from #3:11 to #3:20 and at #3:34 are particularly unsettling. They seem very reminiscent of Jock (James) Sturges photography taken too another level. Although Sally Mann's long term project like photographer Nicholas Nixon and the Brown sisters are at times exquisite, some others are quite shocking and unsettling.
Great job Tatiana! I first discovered Sally Mann's work at a bookstore back in the '90s. As I opened her book and started leafing through the pages, I was mesmerized. Knowing that she was the mother of the kids who appeared in the images, it never occurred to me that she might be sexualizing her children. That is not until years later when I heard she ran into trouble. At that point, I revisited some of her work and could see how it would be disturbing to some people. Love the artful approach you took in producing this video. It does her work justice.
Thank you so much Scott! I had a similar experience, see I didn’t know about the controversy, I only knew some of her images. So I gathered as many as possible and looked at them as I always do before a video and after learning about the criticism I went back to look at it again and I realised same as you why some could find it upsetting. Thank you for watching!

Love her photos

Why bother about such narrow minded hypocrites? Beauty in life is real.
