Unicity is everything, than’s for this insightful portrait of Quebec society and culture. I hope for the rest of Canada to work upon their unicity. It would be great to merge our forces to enhance our Canadian pride
Frankly i think it's the first time i see a genuine interest and desire to understand and explain fairly Quebec culture coming from the anglo-Canadian side. I would say we're more used to something that range from complete disinterest and ignorance up to low-level politicaly motivated prejudice or even old racist anti-catholic orangist quebec-bashing grudge. Thanks
As a Québécoise, I have been wandering why we don't see the same in the rest of Canada. At the very least, there should be a niche for a East Asian languages cinema/television industry in BC. As for English Canada proper, surely, there most be a niche for indy films, they just need a few good mastermind to put it all together... Maybe it's time to get back "la course autour du monde" reality TV show?
I mean there's a pretty obvious factor here that was overlooked in this video: the anglophone provinces need to compete directly with Hollywood, literally the biggest film industry in the world, as anglo-Canada is not culturally that distinct from much of the US. Francophones support QC cinema primarily because they're francophones 😂That said, there are definitely still cultural and regulatory factors at play and I think Ontario and other parts of Canada would benefit from supporting their own local arts instead of importing so much from the US.
They also have a music industry to prove it. Think Celine Dion, Lara Fabian, Ginette Reno, … And a performing art industry (eg Cirque du Soleil) In fact Montreal hosts the second largest artists guild in North America. After Los Angeles but on top of NYC. Kudo to Quebec !
I think we have a very small market so we have the best "cost effective" way to produce with lots of talented people. Our television is that way too (with great production). Our movies are not very commercials, most of people are not interrested but in the cinema eyes they are creative (or emotional)..
Almost perfect for an 8:00 vid. Glad to see Robert Morin cited. Too bad Gilles Carle, a key figure in the development of a commercial Québec cinema, got snubbed. 106,300 english speakers left Québec from 76 to 81. You call that a mass exodus. I call that insufficient.
If there is a strong national feeling in Quebec it is because Quebecers were repressed by blood, their culture despised, their language forbidden, by the English and then Canadian occupation regime. They are a foreign people at home. Unlike the Acadians they did not suffer ethnic cleansing and deportation, so they preserved their history. This is why there is a strong identity in Quebec. They are the last survivors of the French Canadians. And the Government of Canada continues to despise them. Ppl need to know the history of French Canadians, people who suffered centuries of oppression by the British crown (like many others) and the Canadian regime.
Très bonne analyse, merci !

Arcade Fire hails from Quebec.
Quebec values culture. Rest of Canada thinks its a money pit.

Because we have our own culture... da...

Short answer, Quebec has a culture. Which isn'T the case for the ROC.
Damn that's pretty harsh. Care to explain?
aussitot que quelqu'un est bon au canada anglais il va travailler au usa
Aussi, c'est sur que ça l'aide pas
Québec is not Canada, It's more then a province.
But why would be Québec an anomaly ?
