2009-2012 are all rare. Same body, slightly different front grille. A total of 5,555 were sold in the US over the entire 4 years! 2009: 2,043 units sold. 2010: 2,037 sold, 2011:1,096 Sold, and 2012: 379 units sold…. 2009 and 2010 are the best model years as they didn’t suffer from oil consumption issues that plagued the 2011 and 2012 model years.
Love the fact that due to the 3rd gen TL's age being Acuras high point, they of course overbuilt their next gen RL/TLs. Been driving my 09 TL for about 7 months now and I constantly beat on it, 190,000 plus miles, and hasnt giving me any mechanical problems. They certainly do seem overbuilt and the styling still stands out to this day. They'll definitely age fine as time goes on, especially since the days of NA V6 Sedans are getting close to an end.
I currently still drive the previous generation; 2005 which has most of the features you’re talking about. I’ve got 136k. I’m the second owner and I’ve been driving it since 2010👍
I wonder what Acuras would have been like if they actually produced that V8 they planned, and what displacement the V8 would have been, especially since they wanted to fit it transversely in the RL. I could imagine the MDX would have gotten that engine to compete with the Volvo XC90 which had a Yamaha designed V8 at the time.
Acura did product a 3.5L V6 Sport Hybrid powertrain with 377hp/341tq V8 power, sh-awd handling, and you can see up to 4 cylinder economy. Huge expense and not a lot of application for a 4.0L V-8 for Honda/Acura compared to the 3.5L V-6.
2007 here, “only” 140k miles. Reliable if well-maintained, and I still drive it pretty hard. Leather hasn’t aged well, but that’s the only major complaint!!
You don't own one so you can't appreciate it. Owners of the Honda Legend KB1 argue these are quite possibly one of the best sedans in the world at the time. It is built in Japan at the Saitama Plant, it is much more fun to drive than the Lexus GS 350, it is just as reliable as the Lexus LS 430, and the it is unique on the road as you don't see these very often. The later model RLX is a downgrade. But the KB1 is truly a legend.
The RLX did get the V-8 power with I4 mpgs with the Sport Hybrid powertrain with 377hp/341tq, 7DCT, true sh-awd tq vectoring, regen braking, . The current 17-23 NSX borrowed the RLX Sport Hybrid system. The RLX tech version has a 3.5L DI engine with 310hp/270tq with either a 6AT or 10AT for the 18-20 RLX tech. The 14-20 RLX is an improvement over previous RL models; except, in people's minds.
Very similar to my 05 RL. The reason it didn’t sell is because Honda made a V6 Accord and the Acura TL got larger and was a very fast car with plenty of room. This year group RL was Grandpas car like the Buick LaCross and Grandpa couldn’t afford the RL.
The J37 in that car didn’t have DOHC VTEC. No J series had it because of the 60 degree bank angle. The only Honda V6 to have DOHC was the C30/32 engines in the NSX. That engine had a 90 degree bank angle and could accommodate DOHC.
Beautiful car, it had a lot of competition when it was on sale an Acura did not marked it it very well . unfortunately I would have to go with the older 3.5 because it is more reliable as the 3.7 in the updated one has more common engine issues and it has a tendency to burn oil. And parts for the 3.7 are much more scarce oh, I'm not saying the Acura RL with the 3.7 can't make it to high miles tho....
@@jonathana5434 they may be related, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have their own unique issues, and also they have their own unique parts. Let’s say you need an engine for the 3.7 you can’t just put a 3.5 in there lol.
@@jonathana5434 LMAO that doesn’t mean you can just straight up put a 3.5 engine in a 3.7 TL or vice versa. You could put an LS swap in any car but it’s not like they are interchangeable…. I take it you’re not a mechanic, nor a Honda, Acura, certified mechanic, such as myself🤷🏻♂️
I will be honest with you though, I have seen this car for the first time, that too from your channel, and it looks really beautiful, great video, I still do not understand how your channel only has 50K subs, because for this type of quality content, it must be over a mil, but I know you will get there! Cheers
we had an 03 RL go into the scrapyard i work at, and i learned about this body style reading up on that. i asked my father who was an acura tech of 30 years about this because i havent even seen this car before and he told me "Ive maybe worked on a 2012 RL twice in my life, thats why youve never seen one before" 😂
I have a 10 rl got it with 50k on it now it's about to break 83k. I don't have the 6 speed auto, kinda wish I did, love the paddle shifters and that awd drive is awesome. But it is hard to find aftermarket parts for it. Tons for the models years before. If anyone who's a great site with parts hit me up with a link
I drive this car, although my 2011 RL is black. I really enjoy my car, and I find the SH-AWD to be phenomenal when driving in snow and on ice. My only complaints are regarding the over-sized brake calipers (which make getting a second set of wheels for separate winter and summer setups) and the navigation display is disappointing (mostly in the fact that even when updated it looks no better). Overall, I love my car.
Always loved this car and always wanted one. It looks great! Unfortunately I could never afford one. 2009-2010 mag wheels look best in my humble opinion.
3.5 in the 2005-2008 were bulletproof. All cars with the 3.7 suffered from early engine failures. There are no used engines and no one wants to rebuild them
U said the vtec opens for the exhuats as well as the intake so does that make the vtec duel over head cam? Or is it still listed as single over head cam?
Love this car but I never understood why companies do that belt of color on the doors and dash. If it extended to parts of the seats or headliner, maybe. But just the doors and dash are weird.
Awesome car If I didn't just get a 11 MDX last year I would definitely consider one of these. Having a big dog, the bigger MDX was a no brained for me. I love the 3.7! Have you done your timing belt? I just got mine out if the shop, 1,900... Cheers
Holy crap man. Shave, put on a shirt and present yourself. The RL is a well put together machine.....you are too. Just put some effort into yourself. Thanks for the video. I do enjoy your content.

2011 does have the 6 speed auto instead of the 5 speed that 2009-2010 have
Whats wrong with the 5 speed?
thats crazy i didnt know these were that rare
One of the most underrated cars from the modern era. Always get excited when I see one on the road

that’s amazing any big mechanical or electrical issues
Amazing car. I have a 2011. A true pleasure on long drives and it feels very sturdy.
Have 2010 RL myself and do enjoy this unique car...can't explain in any other words :)
I rarely ever see the Acura RL and Acura RLX out in the road.
I just picked up an 08 RL. I like that style grill way better. Super cool car.
They’re very rare indeed. I get excited when I see a 2009-2012 RL.
I have an 09 Acura rl I got last month as my first car, rides a like a dream.
i just bought a 2011 rl same color with only 9700 miles. looks and drives great.
I bought a 2011 rl three months ago love it
I am driving one right now.

I could imagine the MDX would have gotten that engine to compete with the Volvo XC90 which had a Yamaha designed V8 at the time.
I imagine it being a 4.0 liter V8, being a mash up of two K20’s. A V8 for a while was planned for the NSX as well!
What V8?? Honda does not have any v8 engines !
@robant5578 they had plans to make one, but because of the economic crisis of 2008, they scrapped the project.
I have a 2009 RL absolutely beautiful. Only complaint is that the transmission shifts too fast to 5th gear and slightly chokes.
Yup. I have started shifting manually to offset that lugging in 5th.
This is a great car, I love the sound of the engine. I have a 2010. And I almost didn't buy. Almost went fwd TL. So happy I did not!!
2007 here, “only” 140k miles. Reliable if well-maintained, and I still drive it pretty hard. Leather hasn’t aged well, but that’s the only major complaint!!
What are common problems?
LoL it’s really the same car as my 07 RL & I LOVE IT! I wouldn’t trade it for the world 💪🏾💯
Just got my RL a few weeks ago the fact it’s my first car ever still feels mind blowing
That’s how I feel ab driving my 97 rare af

Definitely not as reliable as a ls lol, the 3.7s burn oil…
How is the rlx a downgrade lol? Some features are missing for sure like the leather grab handles and 4 piston calipers but overall its a better car.

Just VTEC on the intake valves, right?
@@hededcdn I believe so.

My 2005 RL has a carbon fiber driveshaft too. They all do.
fun fact for those that didn’t know
this is just a rebadged honda legend.

V8 RL would have been a good competitor to the Infiniti M56.
It would be insane if it had a v8

My Favorite Acura! Thanks man for Reviewing cars we love to see!💪🏽 I own An 2006 with the J35
Gawd….imagine a V8 with VTEC
You're wrong about the carbon fiber drive shaft being for a V8, My 2006 RL has the exact same one
Super cool and unique car. I learning something today!
It has a carbon fiber driveshaft because of weight of the vehicle 😊
I have my 2005 RL and enjoy it as well
Always loved this car and always wanted one. It looks great! Unfortunately I could never afford one. 2009-2010 mag wheels look best in my humble opinion.
They actually made this car for 4 years through 2009-2012 and about 5500 were sold in the US. Still pretty rare but more than 1500 units.
Definitely a lot more rare than the KB 1’s produced from 2005 to 2008. I’ve had an 05 and now have a 2010
I've seen this car but only inside the Acura dealership at Westlake Village, California.
3.5 in the 2005-2008 were bulletproof. All cars with the 3.7 suffered from early engine failures. There are no used engines and no one wants to rebuild them
Jdm Engines are an easy swap. What did they fail from ?
This car is a beast. Love it.
Love my 2010 RL AWD
I’ve seen a few on the roads where I live, but I never knew these were that rare
ive certainly seen them around but didn't know this was so rare, but loving the acura content
K, but why didn't you show the best feature? "Electric back window shade"
The car was basically suppossed to be a ls460 contender
Great review. Thanks for the video.
Everything You mentioned is the same on the previous RL (from 2005) only thing in it has a 3.5L engine and the 5spd tranny
Had a 08 to with the around 60k then I totalled it and got the Rl. But I loved the tl too
6 speed RL’s are rare!
My brother just bought one from a insurance auction lol.
This is a dope channel
My fucking grandma has the 2011 and now I’m super jealous
A guy in my complex has one it’s really nice I was looking for one but I didn’t know it was so rare 😳
Ive only seen like less than 5 of the refreshed RL's. The prerefresh 2005-08 are more common to see
A Honda with an OEM V8 would've been CRAZY!
I always loved the Rl just was wary of owning since mechanics told me this car is Japan built so parts are pricy when comes to repairs.
I wish that he can do a review on a 2006 Acura TL
I’m looking to pick one like this up. When it was new it was too $$$ and other car were better for the price. But now for like 10k it’s amazing ha
I refer to mine as a KB2 model Acura LEGEND, it's real name.
Legend is the name of the honda im europe and japan. But the rl does have a meaning , refined luxury.
I have one under the Honda Legend badge.
If you dont need the AWD...I feel like the Hyundai Genesis( or Equus) with an available V8 is a nicer car from this same timeframe
U said the vtec opens for the exhuats as well as the intake so does that make the vtec duel over head cam? Or is it still listed as single over head cam?
Its sohc with vtec on the intake and exhaust no vtc.
Love this car but I never understood why companies do that belt of color on the doors and dash. If it extended to parts of the seats or headliner, maybe. But just the doors and dash are weird.
That is a very rare color option ive never seen before. May be a custom request.
I’ve definitely heard of them
They started making that body style in 2009, not 2011. I own a 2010 and it looks identical to that one
Beautiful car
I freak out a lil every time I see one of these lol. I forget this exists
I recommended this after I bought one
So the only difference between the 2010 and 2011 is the 6 speed transmission?
They also changed the grille slightly.

I like the body of the 2005-2008 better
Only reason this car was so great was because it wasn't originally designed for the American market
I seen a RL with P-AWS
That would have been an acura RLX, the newer cars. The p-aws option is actually not an awd car. Only "power- all wheel steering."
I love buttons in cars. The more buttons the better! I do not like touch screen and haptic crap. HA

From 2009 to 2013 RL
05-08 front end looks way better
No wonders whybi cant find one -.-
