Thanks a lot Land on Earth. I thankfully got most of this gear when it was much less expensive than it is today. Some of these electrovoice mics I got for $50 or under. They now regularly go for 200+
I checked out the album and really love it. I use a Fostex A8 and have a tascam 38 as well that I’m going to try next. However I love the magic you’re able to get on your thinner cassette format. Glad I found your music! Excellent work
Thanks for stopping by Claude. I had a tascam 38 for a time but still found myself using the cassette portastudios more just because I know how to use them so well and they take no time to set up. How can I listen to your music?
@@Govier true eh. Yeah I’m wondering if the 38 might be too crispy and clean? I have the Klark stuff you’ve got as well and I love em! The 76, the tube eqs and the kt2a. I’ve got a new cassette coming out soon but here’s my last one: ruclips.net/video/KBmh3YOYEzM/видео.html It’s instrumental music
@@ClaudeLavender I checked out your music and wow it is incredible! Those are some smooooth sounding instrumentals. This is definitely something I’ll be revisiting again and again. Listening to vol ii now and will listen to the first album later. Fantastic work man. Very sonically rich, textured sound.
Thanks Govier happy new year my friend. Yes I record on multitrack cassette recorders both 4 and 8 track machines. I've written a few country rock songs.
Who needs ITB well only to publish to various platforms. I have so much credit to you for working this way, please don’t stop, keep analog going like myself. I admire your writing also, well done my friend…
@@Govier Nothing out yet, but I'm finishing up my first EP now under the name Planet Monkey and hope to put that out by the end of the year. That was kind to ask, though, thank you. Loved the full album, and am planning to listen to your older stuff later today. Did you play strings on the record or did you hire someone? Wasn't expecting that when they came in and I loved it. My wife is an amateur cellist so I'm trying to convince her to lay some strings on a couple songs, but I may need to hire out on that if she is too shy lol.
@@jorgemartinez42069 ok yeah I’ll for sure check it when you put it out. I am fortunate enough to be good friends with a classically trained stand up bassist who just came over one day and did it. Yeah convince your wife to do it! Nothing to be shy about it’s just her playing alone to a mic. Thanks for checking out all the music Jorge. You might like the one I released in 2020 as well.
Man, this is fantastic!!!! I just stumbled on your video searching for info on best ways to transfer masters out of my Tascam 4trk. Thanks for the tip about getting a production notebook. I'm going to search for one now. 👍✌
I hope your master transfers go well. The production notes are really helpful for figuring out how to recreate a sound. These 4 tracks are lots of fun. Thanks for stopping by Michael.
@@Govier Thanks for the nice reply. About the notebook/log. I searched eBay and Google for a production/recording notebook and had no luck. Are you writing your notes in a generic blank notebook or is it a specific log type thing? I'm probably over thinking again. Hahahaa
@@Govier I do need to take notes like you've done. I've created some cool interesting sounds, then listen back and think..... How the heck did I get those sounds? I'll never be able to re-create them exactly again. Maybe close, but never the same. Notes with what pedals, mics, and synth programs will be great to have!!
I'll check out the album! Sounds amazing. Could you do a video step by step of how you recorded 1 song? I would like to start recording this way to experiment with new sound textures and don't even know where to start.
Hey thanks for stopping by Aldo. I hadn’t ever considered doing a step by video of myself recording a song as I do it but I suppose I could. The best place to start would be to just get a working/serviced 4 track. It’s much less daunting once you’ve recorded a few songs on one. The only tricky part can be if you’re bouncing tracks together as I did on this song but there are helpful videos on RUclips about how to do that.
We used to have no other choice (in 1985) but to record like that, but we maintained a stereo mix. Then we'd have a master mix of music only, and sing live against it into a 2 track master cassette, listen in the car stereo, and do it over if the vocal mix was bad. We got a few tracks that way that actually made it onto the airwaves on alt radio.
Hey that’s awesome D S. That’s an interesting way of maintaining a stereo mix without ping-ponging tracks and ending up with a mostly mono mix. I’ve recorded all sorts of ways and for some reason the portastudios have always been my favorite. Do you still record? If so, do you find yourself missing your old 4 tracks or are you content with your current recording process? Thanks for stopping by.
First of all, thanks for taking the time to do the video. However, I may not be alone with a little bit frustration here. As an owner of a PMD 720, I was looking for a video showing the mixdown process in particular since I forgot how to do it and do not own a manual. While it is great for fans to see how you recorded track after track, to me it is quite obvious how multitrack recording works and I was looking for more of a tutorial. Not ranting here, just thought this might be some useful feedback for you. All the Best!
Thanks for the constructive feedback Kesscho. I will make that kind of video when I have the time. That’s a great idea. Sorry if you feel misled as that was not my intention. Thanks for stopping by.
Hey I’m recording a little indie ep on the the Tasman 488, was just wondering how you got the vocal delay, was it just 1/4” from ur mic pre into a guitar pedal?
Nice work man! You were forced to make some mixing choices ahead of time. Just curious if being forced to make those decisions made you approach your production with an end point in mind? As opposed to having an endless amount of tracks and virtual instruments in a DAW?
There’s certainly a bit more planning that goes into the 4 track recording. I knew beforehand I was going to do the drums, bounce them down, and then eventually bounce the drums, bass, and guitar together. I thought I might end up bouncing the vocals together to the same track to free up two additional tracks but realized I didn’t need two additional tracks. In addition, I liked the gentle pan on the two vocal tracks as most of the track is in mono. There was some premeditation as well as some spontaneity for this particular track. Thanks for stopping by GG Jindrak.
I don’t think it needs a belt change. The tape speed would sound off or one of the functions just flat out wouldn’t work. Not afraid of multiple bounces at all. If I wanted my stuff to sound super hi-fi I wouldn’t be recording on cassette. I lean into the lofi for sure. Thanks for stopping by Mark.
The last time I recorded multitrack was in 2016. Every song is different and the means and the going through are also, It is great to watch you be proud of your work and the result is nice and a good track.
Yeah I totally agree that every song is different, Luke. I’ve recorded songs that ended up sounding completely different using similar equipment on the same machine. I was kind’ve bothered by the harshness in the guitar at times in this track but if I cut too many highs then the drums didn’t sound as punchy since they were all on the same track. Where can I hear the stuff you recorded? Thanks for stopping by.
