I believe that in the original song there are two bass tracks layered on top of each other and this is only one of those two. That explains why this track doesn’t have the chorusy sound it does in the finished song. If you listen to the actual song you can hear the two tracks separate at certain points, like in the outro at around 3:03 you hear an open E get hit in the other track that you don’t hear on this track.
It might be the guitar part. It's much more prominent on the Permanent version but it's still present on the original, albeit mixed very low. Maybe that's where the chorusing comes from.
didnt even remember of me doing this comment 1 year ago apparently, just passing by here and found it. what a nice surprise. didnt even ever look at replies. will def give it a play on my 3 strings bass. d string is missing on mine lol. anyway, theres def at least a section which falls under sixth. i mean as you said given it's a d drone then there some notes in the melody that armonize with it within a sixth. love that interval. so strange. extraniating feel (apart from this song itself i mean).
Definitely sounds like it’s him, judging by the overall sound quality of the track, his typical style of only downstrokes, and the D string droning which most people who cover this song leave out.
The bass is so pretty in this song.
in every joy division song*
I like that one time he played the melody.
The bass utterly dominates in this song.

I’d be interested to know who came up with this melody. Hooky, Barney and Ian all play/sing it
Is this actually peter hook playing?

@@JoeMama-pj4nv that D string droning really adds some more depth to the tune
