I'm sorry, I know art experts have determined the cupid picture was in the original and latter painted out by someone else. Whoever painted cupid out did the right thing. Without cupid we the viewers have to figure out what she's reading. With cupid in there Vermeer might as well have painted a big red arrow pointing at the letter with the words "LOVE LETTER" in 90 point type.
Cupid clutters the painting. The composition is better without it.
