  • Saint Mary by-the-Sea has been a staple of Cape May Point since it was first built as a hotel in 1889, but soon it could disappear into history. We decided to get the drone up to get video of this beautiful building.

I spent my summers with friends at The Tower Cottage, on the dunes of Cape May Point in the 70's. It was 3 blocks down from this building and the nuns would gather at The Tower Cottage for happy hour. Such wonderful memories.
My heart aches for those times.

Just discovered you channel. Enjoying it. We spent summers in cape may wildwood for 35 years with our kids. Saint Mary’s beach was where we took kids. We recently moved outside Nashville TN. We enjoyed reliving the memories thanks.

I understand why they're doing it, but it still makes me sad! Thanks for being respectful of the nuns as well the drone laws!

Great video! It's great that you got footage of the building for when it's gone. Such a nice area and the last shot was perfect. The building is very cool looking and so close to the beach.

edde333 thank you so much. The last shot was my favorite!!! Hopefully the Sisters change their mind. It’s way too beautiful of a building

Was in Cape May Point in early September and visited this site knowing the fate of this beautiful building. I made sure to take photos.

No A/C... except for the fairly obvious air conditioning heat exchangers scattered around the exterior, presumably hooked up to the original, 1889 electrical wiring. Um, yeah.
This building has been part of my life's seascape for half-a-century. I would lie down in front of the bulldozers to see it saved. The video is very beautiful, and very much appreciated. Gratitude.

What a beautiful structure and the location is awesome. Would love to know the history of the building. We lose too many beautiful places like this every year.

Thanks for this great drone video! Hopefully the Sisters of St. Joseph will come to their senses and save this building for future generations, it would make an excellent museum and cultural center administered by MAC. Destruction of this building would be nothing more than cultural vandalism.

I am with you on hoping that this becomes something other then dirt. The MAC would be the best group to give it to. They do a great job on their other projects!

My Dad painted there in the convent back in the 70’s. He said at that time the waves used to roll right up under the porch that faced the ocean side.

Im all for saving it!!! It can be done!!! Yes a lot of money but if there are multiple co-owners or the right developers come in to restore and update it, its possible.

A gazillion dollars to bring her back to her former glory, but it’s still heartbreaking 💔

This is a holy place that the Sisters use to offer spiritual retreats. It is heartbreaking to lose such a historic and beautiful site but the sisters of St. Joseph can not afford the cost of renovations necessary to make the building ADA approved for one thing. What is needed is a wealthy benefactor, someone like Ellen DeGeneres, to save St. Mary's!

So depressing. I guess some big money developer bought it...yuck! Sickening to me...these old buildings have so much character. 😥💔

Sad, but it is what it is. I remember the Christian Admiral. Times change.

Yeah, when fishing out at sea to the south we'd always spot the lighthouse and the red roof of the Christian Admiral first.

this building still looks immaculate in its current condition. What a crime to tear this down. Who ever needed air conditioning at the shore. They are right on the beach. Couldnt they find Christians to donate the new electrics? They do have neighbors so I dont see the current need for more wild life spaces. One more big loss for the cape. RIP one more grand dame.

I think the Disney Resort you are referring to is the Grand Floridian , shame to loose a building like this but unfortunately economics is economics, to rewire that building alone forget about turning it into a resort you are talking millions of dollars, nevermind HVAC systems, I would imagine the interior finishes are probably nothing too exciting either, you'd essentially be talking about rebuilding the entire thing from the inside out to be ADA and to meet modern fire code. Probably the best that could happen is that its knocked down and turned back into nature rather than some crappy condos being built there.
