On the topic of authenticity and uniqueness in kpop, one of my favourite things ever said about Red Velvet was from an article in Korean media long ago, nearer to the start of their careers, that said something along the lines of "Red Velvet does not ask to be loved by fans." Although they are an idol group, with all the pros and cons of what that title means, they also are based on a concept that will lose most people in the idol group space; a "dual concept" concept that has become increasingly blurred. They're a group that does not stick to one thing, EVER, and so it becomes a constant dice roll about how the people who follow them, or come across them, will react. The article mentions how it's rare to find anyone fully agreeing WHO Red Velvet really are and what their identity as a group are. And although that sounds like a weakness in their brand, it is precisely that sense of complexity that makes them WHO they are. They are a group with multiple complex and shallow layers. They are never one thing or easily digestible, and it remains true even outside of their songs, videos, and art direction. Also a point to remember is that they debuted in 2014 and have passed through many trends not once fully integrating themselves into any of them. Them and their company make strange decisions all the time, but there's a reason why if you look back at their older titles, they still hit the same even now. And whether it's conventional or unconventional, the girls put their 100% into performing or singing those songs, never lacking in the talent to deliver them as best as they can. The article at the end even mentions "An idol doing this much, to not come in with their heads bowed down, don't you want to give them support?" A similar sentiment was said by another Korean article this year, "Red Velvet, how to be loved without bowing your head." They are known as one of the groups in kpop that is constantly trying something new, exploring their different avenues and encouraging those who view them to use their imaginations. They rarely spoon feed you their concept or story, but it's part of the fun of being their fan. It's engaging to talk amongst their fans because you just see ALL the varying opinions about a myriad of different topics, spinning different stories and theories together that encompass their whole career. It's entertaining. And every person I've ever put Red Velvet onto, I've mentioned to them that they should just enjoy the ride. Red Velvet is a roller coaster, a festival, a circus, a fairytale, and they know it even if the rest of the world does not want to keep up. They are similar yet different from groups like BTS, BB, or 2NE1 or any idols along those veins trying to be heard above the crowd by screaming authenticity and power, those who focus on their authentic artistry and try to really separate themselves from what kpop has always had to offer. Those groups absolutely deserve all the praise for all the space they've expanded for future kpop groups. However, Red Velvet LEANS into being a kpop idol girl group and they are absolutely unapologetic about it, even if that's just on the surface. They lean into it, unashamed of what others might say, while trying to break some of the stereotypes that come with being one (sometimes purposely and sometimes accidentally). They never lose their own individual artistry and expression within that idol space they've been given. Even before BTS' dominant influence and just a little during BB and 2NE1's reign in kpop, Red Velvet was carving a space for themselves, and so I will always recommend them and for people to explore them because I think they deserve to be supported whether with just a passing once over or a deep dive. Their talent speaks volumes if not the variety of what they choose to tackle. Sorry about this long tangent lol. I just love them a lot.

I'll be honest, I've been watching a lot of reactions to this song and so many of them in the millennial age range can recognize the incorporation of that late 90s, early 2000s rnb/pop/hiphop sound...the sound of our middle school or high school days. So it's extremely nostalgic, at least for me. Seulgi, my bias 🔥♥️ completely owns this I'm sorry. Her vocals, her visual, her dancing...she's perfection 🔥🔥♥️♥️ JOY WITH BANGS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS 😭 I say this as a straight woman, Joy has got me actin up 😭🤦🏾♀️🔥♥️ ESPECIALLY AT 3:40. The beside in & out also sunny side up have many similarities and they play with r&b a lot and it’s amazing also scary cause with red velvet they always change how they structure their songs which is why this was so pleasing cause you thought you would get a lot of mellow and toned down parts and it would keep that momentum but we were soothed through the beautiful pre-chorus then hit In The face with what I must say is one of the best main choruses ever and the way that the sub vocalist are able to hit such high notes with ease is insane
