You beautiful British. I do not have the words to express the gratitude you are due. You gave the world a law and a freedom it hadn't had before. You have philosophers who shaped the western world, which formed the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and influenced all of Europe. You led the way in science, industry, and when you saw that it was needed, in care of the young, poor, and helpless. Yours is the music of true nobility, love, and the sacrifice that gives birth to both. How did you build an empire most of whose former colonies do not hate it but speak well of their 'British' heritage? Your words and thoughts ring in our ears yet, we study your works, and many of us think as you do and are glad of it. You have poets and writers and politicians whom we read to our profit and happiness. You are a people who at least three times stood alone, twice for however brief a time until others came to your deserving aid, against tyranny and even evil, ordinary people with extraordinary hearts, encouraging all to do what is right even when it is hard because it was needed and so were they. So are you still. This anthem may be unofficial, but it is true. Britain, I salute you. Thank you.

Jane Tatam Oh me too Jane - we are a remarkable nation and, like you, I'm very proud indeed of our heritage in these islands. It is a lovely arrangement isn't it? Geoff Knorr did a wonderful job here.
Like many people sharing comments here, I’m invariably reduced to tears by this moving work of Holst. This arrangement is especially powerful, given that it accompanies the archival film of Winston Churchill’s funeral. For we who so admired our fathers and uncles returning-or not returning-from the war against fascism in Europe, and barbaric aggression in the Pacific, this music is not just another RUclips moment. It is elegiac, epic, anthemic-a wistful hymn of gratitude to a generation that risked everything for us, their kids and grandkids. We owe our deepest gratitude to the sons of Britain and Russia, who stood so steady against odds so ebbing. Their courage guaranteed the survival of a free humanity, with all the tear-brimmed sentiment that deserves. We can see the evil posed by Trump and Putin because their brand of evil is not new. Would our resistance be as strong as our fathers’? Anyone moved by this music must embrace its importance in the recurring struggle against the new Hitlers, the new Mussolinis, Francos and Hirohitos.

It tells of how we have always been stronger toghether, and that we shouldn't subtle differences pull us apart. This song is what the United Kingdom is to me.
@@alexbryan-jones3409 Yes I agree. I know of some nations who have multiple anthems and I think we should do the same. The monarchal anthem is definitely important still as it represents our Monarch but I Vow To Thee My Country, as you said, is absolutely a representation of us as a people. If we had both as our anthems so they could be used interchangeably when and where needed, it would be brilliant.

Thank you plows. As a young ensign, I talked our captain into authorizing wooly pullys for the officers and chiefs on the ship. It just so happened that HMS Hermes was in port and agreed to sell us the sweaters out of their ship's stores. The real coup came when we had the officers from Hermes' wardroom over for dinner and wore them. I still have mine 40 years later. I can't fit in it any more but I have it.I also got to ride HMS Turbulent for a joint exercise. Outstanding people.
Yanks and Brits, once long ago enemies -- today and forever, friends and lovers and allies. God be near to us all and to all our true neighbors. Grant us peace.
@@britbazza9302 What you said regarding Americans in the UK may be sentimentally true but it isn't legally true. Please push for strengthening social ties between our two countries so Americans like me will have an easier time qualifying for work visas in your country! I'm over-qualified and it still was impossible for me to stay in spite of multiple small businesses wanting to hire me for skilled work. All because I'm freelance in music (a composer and teacher) and not working some corporate job. I love the UK and miss it so dearly already :(
I've listened to many different arrangements of this piece, over many years - this version is undoubtedly my favourite. It's so beautiful and utterly captivating! Thank you for uploading it with such gorgeous photos...they suit the music perfectly! I've thoroughly enjoyed my mini tour around your channel. I will definitely be tuning in again.
I vow to Thee, my country, all earthly things above Entire & whole & perfect, the service of my love The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best The love that never falters, the love that pays the price The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice & there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know We may not count her armies, we may not see her King Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering And soul by soul & silently her shining bounds increase And her room are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace
Hello! I absolutely treassure this music. I am a Canadian, many have forgotten but I will never forget my country's ties to the British Commonwealth. I swear my allegiance to the Queen, and to the Queen only. Not some Liberal party. I'd rather be under British Rule than some Trudeau. I would like to know if this song is on spotify, so I can listen to it peacefully. Thanks!
I'm happy we are an independent country of our own. I'm not proud of a heritage as a nation, that did not represent themselves well at all, historically, with their bigoted, colonial, "own the world," type of attitude that they had. They would kill any culture anywhere if they could have at the time, and made the world their own. Thank God for the U.S.A. to finally stand up to them. It took us till the 1980s to get our own "constitution," here in Canada. She's not my Queen, the time for royalty can caste systems is long gone. There, now two different viewpoints are out there. :-)
@@TheRealCoryKent Hello, its been 10 months and over that time my mindset has really changed a lot. Looking through it our country Canada really doesn't need a Queen and I am forever grateful we are independant. I love my country. The part about the britiah colonising the world and taking cultures is a fact that I canot deny. However, I am only giving credit to the british in coming here and creating a foundation to what this land is now. Thanks for the reply! 👍
@@commander_alpha8455 Canada is French, formed by French, even the name Canada is French, don't forget them. Canada is beautiful because of these two influences, two nations who made war, but who made a country together too.
Sad! The once 'Great' Britain! These melodies are the traces of a once Great Britain. Mind you, all of the West including my country, Canada, is taking the same path.
+Peter P Oh I know you fellows in Canada are up against it. Chin up Peter - we must all push and shove, for the sake of our countries. It's never too late you know. No surrender! :)
"When you're going through hell, don't stop!" (Churchill) or, "Life is not a bowl of cherries." (Anonymous) or, "I didn't promise you a rose garden." (American Country Music). :) or, "God help us all"(The Bible, or possibly Shakespeare).
I’m Italian and I love nearly all the patriotic chants in the world (I believe that the love for your country is always a pure thing, and in most cases is legitimate). But this song has something more, it is absolutely astonishing. God bless UK!
AntPDC Thank you! And I return your kind wishes! Unfortunately Italy has not the same national pride and unity that UK has, but at least we have some very moving songs (not like this masterpiece)
I listened to Jupiter with Simon Rattle conducting on the radio whilst driving home today. So I knew I just had to visit your channel once home and listen to this perfect video, the beautiful gentle images combining with this exquisite music to make this a most magical and for me, patriotic experience, and make me feel whole once again. There WILL always be an England, if we keep our heads about us, and can listen to your amazing channel! Thank you.
+Gwen Marsh Thanks Gwen. I regret that patriotism, love of country, tradition and national identity is now considered almost a hate crime by today's bat-crazy standards. As an English person in particular, I'm pretty fed up with being made to feel I'm somehow bad for flying the St. George's Cross on St. George's Day - especially when it's perfectly fine to fly the Scottish St. Andrews Cross, the Welsh Dragon, and the flag of St. Patrick all year round. Sometimes I feel I have to apologise even for being "English". Am I turning into Victor Meldrew? OMG... ;)
+AntPDC Haha no, you're most certainly NOT! But you have made me laugh, I can hear his words now.... However, no truer words are said and I agree whole heartedly; we almost have to apologise for or hide our heritage and nationality, of which, I am both appalled and saddened and when possible, rebel within the limits of respectability. My late parents, their respective parents and families all participated and contributed to the freedom we enjoy today and would be horrified to see what has become of our ever decreasing green and pleasant land and the diminishing core values and traditions that make us still very proud and the envy of the world. Heavens, maybe I've turned into the female version of Victor Meldrew, double OMG!! :))
Thanks for this... beautiful.... And for Bill Stamford and others don't lose faith.... We all chose every day to be great or indifferent or worse.... Britain still offers the world one of the best pathways forward.... look outside ... can you put your hand on your heart and soul and believe China or Russia (or the many regimes in the middle east or Africa) have the greatest chance of love and liberty.... I hope Britain can continue to be Great.... with America, Australia, Canada, NZ and many other countless nations and people that believe in freedom and liberalism and compassion can continue to shape the lives of more people (and not those with approaches like Nazism, Stalinism and others)... no person or system is perfect.... but some are seriously less perfect than others. ....
I find it very difficult to be an Englishman these days and I don't think I'm alone. Today expressing a view on the aspects of the active English love of England, it's past and very little in the present and perhaps a fading continuance for the future, is so very, very sad To play these reminders here presented in music reflects a hollow and decaying lose. Perhaps it is best recalled in sentimental moments and then quickly distance them from our conscious minds to the deep recesses of dreams and past glories.
Bill Stamford I do sympathise Bill, but only a bit. The perpetual, relentless bad news broadcast in our massively "connected" world overwhelms us, makes us feel helpless, angry and scared - even depressed. Today, people from many nations around the World subjected to this endless stream of negativity share your mood (many friends in the US, Canada and Mexico succumb to a gloomy outlook too). It's true that succeeding generations of older people have always been highly critical of life in their contemporary Britain, looked back to times "when things were better". But were they? Mercifully, I wasn't around in WW1 or WW2, but I cannot even remotely contemplate what it must have been like then - the sheer enormity of the threat of impending doom? As Britons, we have huge reasons to be proud, much to celebrate and be thankful for, much to look ahead to, and much to work at still. Onwards and upwards - remember Churchill, Wellington, Nelson, Elizabeth I and other great Britons in history. They didn't lie down and cry... . Best wishes.
Well commented but for all the past misgivings at least we had an national identity which served us through many a dark time. Today we are without a uniting cause and even more we don't care.
Stand tall, stand proud Bill! I am an American and was getting into the doldrums about sense of nation and pride in same - No more! We both know what our nations have done, the good and the bad, but tell me a country worse off for our being there. Your country civilized the world - yes, I said it and believe it! As allies, we saved the world from utter darkness and one day, we will be called together again to do the same. I only hope and pray that our peoples are still up to the task.
Even though I am not British but when covid19 is done and dusted i will play this full volume and dedicate it to the entire world..but not yet,not yet!

Once again Ant you show how a few pictures can illuminate a piece of music. I have been telling you this for 3 years now - you have an imagination I love and a skill to mix pictures with music that I am jealous of. :)
...and why should you? Let me join you as a very proud Brit myself. I rather like this arrangement, a lovely ending. I look forward to the upcoming details.....
As an English lady living in Canada, this breaks my heart! I still consider the UK home and fifty years later still don’t think of Canada as home, but the beautiful place where I live and where my children and grandchildren live.

The words to “I Vow to Thee, My Country” we’re from a poem by Sir Cecil Arthur Spring Rice, British Ambassador to the USA from 1913-1918. He was a 40-year, close friend with Theodore Roosevelt. Spring Rice passed away on February 14, 1918. TR passed away less than 11 months later on January 6, 1919.
I’m playing the band arrangement of this in symphonic band, I can just imagine my band director tearing up as he conducts this in front of an audience.
Thank You! Nice arrangement of hymn and beautiful photography. Any chance you can make a music video for Vaughan Williams 'God Bless the Master' from the Folksongs of the Four Seasons. Do you know of any other Benediction Hymns?
AntPDC, no need to apologize for patriotism. Now in this 21st century, more than ever before, freedom loving people around the world must necessarily stop feeling as though they need to apologize for expressions of patriotism toward their nations, need to stop allowing for restrictive aims wrought by foolish proponents of "global citizenry," which ultimately seek to remove from the minds of human beings, their national consciousness. Just one single thing ought to be embraced "globally" by freedom loving patriots: this soulful music and its lyrics.

I as well share the same heritage and I'm American too. Whenever I hear this hymn it almost makes me want to shed a tear. Which it has before.
And the melody in your heart will fill with only love for her. Our great nation.
Welcome back to the world, dear Britannia-- breathe in the free air, and know you have been sorely missed! from your American cousins
Yanks and Brits, once long ago enemies -- today and forever, friends and lovers and allies. God be near to us all and to all our true neighbors. Grant us peace.
My parents grew up in the Empire, and though I was born in America, Brittania will always be home because home is where the heart is. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
I'm a yank who loves our Motherland and we owe everything to the UK for our culture and most everything we care about.
God Bless the USA. p.s send us a Trump clone.
I do love Trump, he rules!!
FYI Trumps mum , born in Scotland.
Thnx Brit, almost made it a few years past.
+Christopher Leslie I agree on this arrangement Christopher. Thank you for your comment, and best wishes.
This is civilization V version isn't it?
I vow to Thee, my country, all earthly things above
Entire & whole & perfect, the service of my love
The love that asks no questions, the love that stands the test
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice
& there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering
And soul by soul & silently her shining bounds increase
And her room are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace
@@inhocsignovinces1327 Did not expect a reply after so long haha. But yeah i forgot to mention the french
From Spain with respect and admiration.

Thank you, sir.
Ignacio Lopez Muchas Gracias señor. 😁😁😁😁
One of my favourite hymns! From Canada.
it's not a hymn, but there is an arrangement of it as a hymn with different words
Exactly so! Canada is more than one man.
Beautiful arrangement & imagery thanks for sharing
I’m Italian and I love nearly all the patriotic chants in the world (I believe that the love for your country is always a pure thing, and in most cases is legitimate). But this song has something more, it is absolutely astonishing. God bless UK!
I adore Italy. My second spiritual home. Best wishes Mattia.
AntPDC Thank you! And I return your kind wishes! Unfortunately Italy has not the same national pride and unity that UK has, but at least we have some very moving songs (not like this masterpiece)
@@mattviti94 ... not the least of which .... are the songs of Ferrari and Ducati!!!
You surely know what good music sounds like. Your photos are beautiful and powerful. I am grateful I ran into your channel. Thank you.
...then I'm happy Universe.
You make me happy. Thank you.
+Gwen Marsh Margaret, MARGARET...!
Victor....we did it, we did it! I don't believe it!!!!!! :)))
The best hymn ever written imo...
wonderful music, wonderful everything
Wow. Far and away my favorite performance of this music! Thank you for sharing it. :-)
Mine too!
I hope Britain can continue to be Great.... with America, Australia, Canada, NZ and many other countless nations and people that believe in freedom and liberalism and compassion can continue to shape the lives of more people (and not those with approaches like Nazism, Stalinism and others)... no person or system is perfect.... but some are seriously less perfect than others. ....
Very well said Andrew.
très jolie version de ce chant patriotique, œuvre vraiment belle
God bless Scotland God's own country and part of Britain, about which I Vow To Thee My Country was written. All of britain.
No kidding Matt! I love Scotland with a great passion. My parents took us up there on many a holiday, and my love for Scotland is undiminished.
Scotland is a beautiful country to be sure.
Vote this music for the English national anthem. it has to be...
Nick Morris not as long as the monarchy exists, or the head of state orders it to be changed.
It baffles the mind that England still doesn't have a national anthem, but I agree, I think this should be it
@Ian Turner I vow, Jerusalem, PCM1 (LoHaG), and Barwick Green.
God Save The Queen is the Anthem. Or The KIng. There are no other Anthem.
I find it very difficult to be an Englishman these days and I don't think I'm alone. Today expressing a view on the aspects of the active English love of England, it's past and very little in the present and perhaps a fading continuance for the future, is so very, very sad
To play these reminders here presented in music reflects a hollow and decaying lose.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Yes indeed!
Even though I am not British but when covid19 is done and dusted i will play this full volume and dedicate it to the entire world..but not yet,not yet!
I hope Id be a British Citizen 😍

Lovely London imagery this time around AntPDC. Holst's Jupiter does indeed fit the subject. Also how lucky were you that the Queen was in Parliament! I saw the Royal Standard flying atop the Victoria tower.

This needs to be the UK national anthem
As an English lady living in Canada, this breaks my heart! I still consider the UK home and fifty years later still don’t think of Canada as home, but the beautiful place where I live and where my children and grandchildren live.

The words to “I Vow to Thee, My Country” we’re from a poem by Sir Cecil Arthur Spring Rice, British Ambassador to the USA from 1913-1918. He was a 40-year, close friend with Theodore Roosevelt. Spring Rice passed away on February 14, 1918. TR passed away less than 11 months later on January 6, 1919.

Gustav Holst the composer was half German.
I’m playing the band arrangement of this in symphonic band, I can just imagine my band director tearing up as he conducts this in front of an audience.
No apologies are necessary, sir.

Thank You! Nice arrangement of hymn and beautiful photography. Any chance you can make a music video for Vaughan Williams 'God Bless the Master' from the Folksongs of the Four Seasons. Do you know of any other Benediction Hymns?
Holst was an amazing guy.
"Would you like to trade with England?" ❤️
Very nice..
This is my favorite arrangement of this most beautiful song! Thank you! I cannot find a piano version of this arrangement - is there one out there?
Not that I know of Paula.
