1:35 Corpses fading out is a flag that can be set on any character in the games independent of the German censorship, and Blue Shift has many enemies set to fade out by default as a performance optimization originating from its Dreamcast roots that wasn't changed in the PC version. Regular corpses are also seen disappearing in Half-Life and Opposing Force, but this is primarily relegated to ones appearing in large and open areas that were considered performance intensive for the time.
That makes a lot of sense, yeah. There were still a couple instances where I don't think it made any sense, though (small, cramped corridors where performance optimization is easiest). Also, I'm honored to have you comment on my videos!
yes, but the german version does not fade away a corpse but a living NPC just before it dies. It kind of freezes in the first frame of death and there is no gibbing. In normal half life the actual corpses and gibs fade away after some time, after the animations are done playing, and that is how the flag works, you can check this out in Sven Co-op. This german version is clearly modified from the engine itself since said flag works differently.

I like how they kept the spirit of "rise and shine" in HL2 intro. First it's a generic "good morning", but repeated slowly, it becomes "become great and have an impact on the world"
I think the two soldiers in the Blue Shift Sewer Section aren't just using human voices, but also the human model - meaning that the german version of Blue Shift implies that both robots and humans were send in. With Gordon exclusively encountering the former, Shepard the latter, and Barney primarily the former with overhearing the latter. Hard to tell, but they didn't seem (at first glance) to possess the robot model. The mighty power of noclip could resolve that mystery, of course.
@@GermanPeter Fair's fair. I listened to a Ross Scott interview recently; he said he didn't complete Black Mesa because Half-Life felt like work to him b/c of all his work with Freeman's Mind
You could interpret the robot soldiers as mech suits that can operate independently or be worn by people. Though their model doesn't absolutely accommodate that, it would explain why they sometimes bleed or talk like people and sometimes not.
Kinda interesting, the reason why they translated "Barnacles" to "Muschelwesen" at 18:50 is probably because they translated the word Barnacle directly. A barnacle is an animal which grows on the underside of boats and other surfaces which are submerged. I guess they didn't bother to just come up with a unique name for the alien in German
1:38 The corpses fade out in the american release as well. It's a flag you can apply to any monster(NPC) in the game. I map for Half-Life 1, so I know this for a fact.

The reason the soldier mentioned Mech-Units in the transmission in Opposing Force is because it's the same transmission that Gordon receives when designating bomb targets in Surface Tension. In the German version they completely bork this because in the original it was a robot saying it with a robot voice, but in op4 they rerecorded it with a human voice (despite it being the same line).

Hey there! Once again excellent work on this video essay of the hl spinoffs. As a German I also want to thank you for making the English half-life community familiar with the German dubs. I really enjoy watching your videos and can´t wait for the one about hl2 and it´s comically bad voice acting! :D It is quite sad that such an impressive and gamechanging game didn´t get the best treatment, when it comes to the voice acting. Although there is an explaination for why it turned out this way. Apparenty they didn´t have the best of budgets for the dubbing and were only able to get voice actors who usually only did voice overs for advertisements on TV (some of them did have some experience in video game dubbing thouh, specifically Mossmans, Alyx´s and Breen´s voice actors but more on that later). The actors were all living in the UK back then which would also explain the weird pronounciations for some of the English words and their inability to pronounce word witch an O and R next to eachother, like "Telepoughter" and "Goughdenn Freemann" or most of the "U"-sounds. For example "Bluck Mesa" or "Duhd" (which means dad btw). Its just the actors being influenced by the people around them (nothing against the british pronounciation of course, it just sounds out of place, and isn´t what we are used to in Germany). Now to the german voices. My favourite one out of them all is of course Breen, who managed to bring something to the table that is worthy of the original or perhaps even better. It´s such a shame that´s probably the only good thing I can say about the German dub (Eli wasn´t to bad either but not nearly as good). As for the others, I really miss the old Barney. I just want to hear him say "Schutzanzuch" in his dull but relatable voice one more time. Instead what we got is a voice that does the exact opposite. His casuality seems so fake and unnatural. He sure does has his own charme but it´s a different one. They did change the G-Man voice actor too (just like all the others) but kept all the bad things that made his hl1 voice so unfitting in the first place, except now he sounds even younger. There´s not much to say about Alyx and Kleiner except for the pronounciation issues. But no matter how much i think about it, I can´t wrap my head around why they chose the exact same actor for Magnussen and Kleiner! At least I think they are, because they sound so similar you have to look at the subtitles colour to see, who is talking! Now to Mossman and I only mentioned her seperatly because I couldn´t have wished for a better casting for GLaDOS from the Portal series. Gertrude Thoma (who can also be heard in some other games like Metal Gear Solid together with Alyx´ voice actor), did I fantastic job on the sarcastic and sadistic Robot Lady and especially in old Aperture as Caroline. But as we say in Germany: Now comes the big "BUT": She sadly doesn´t sound that good in hl2. Her voice fits Caroline perfectly, mainly because you only hear her so rarely. It sounds so realistic and like a real human, which is just what you want for the role of Caroline. But realism isnt what you need when dubbing a character that you interact with multiple times throughout a game. Voice actors have to be able to convey emotions and sometimes overegsaturate on those to make it more believable, even if that sounds like it directly contradicts eachother, just like killing you and giving you good advice. And GLaDOS still manages to put those two together pretty well ;) Anyways, that is basically all I wanted to say. Keep up the great content! Bye bye! :D
That's so insanely interesting! Would you mind sending me some links to where you read/ heard these things? Because those are some absolutely incredible facts and really important for the video! Also, guess I'll have to briefly mention Portal 1 & 2 in the Half-Life 2 video as well then. I did play through HL2 already and can tell the dub is terrible, but after playing a bit of the intro of Episode 1, I could tell that Alyx doesn't sound AS bad anymore.
@@GermanPeter Hello again, Sorry for the late reply. So there unfortunately is a small problem. I read about it a few years ago in a comment on a forum that also hat a link attached, to a detailed article from some German Game review website. For the past two day I've been looking for this original post, but I just was'nt able to find it. What I did find however, were several other people claiming the exact same thing. I messaged all of them (two on video game forums and one comment on RUclips), but I didn't get a reply from any of them yet. But since a didn't want to come back empty handed I put together a little playlist of videos I collected over time of German Half Life 2 Voice actors and some roles they played. The research wasn't useless after all because I found out man interesting things while browsing trhought forums. For example, that both Breen's and Barney's voice actors had some movie roles way before their work with Valve (notably American productions, so working in a British studio isn't to far off. And since those two mostly worked in America in the past, they don't have a Brittish accent. I also put those videos in the playlist). I also found out throught an older comment on a forum discussing German Video Game dubs, that Eli's actor is or was the Sports announcer/commentator for Eurosport Boxing. In addition to that there are also some videos I couldn't find a backstory to. One of them being a piece of music sung by Gertrude Thoma (Mossman/Overwatch/GLaDOS/Caroline), which is pretty interesting considering Ellen McLain (GLaDOS' English voice) is an opera singer. You can also very clearly hear her accent here, so even if I won't manage to find anything about the dubbing studio in the UK, at least there's proof that she has that accent. The last mentionable thing is an old recording Britta Gartner (Alyx Vance) providing her voice for a presumably British radio channel. I'll include all the links in a seperate comment, because RUclips sometimes censores comments that contain links. I'll also add to the playlist if I do end up finding some more interesting videos/sites. In the meantime I'll be waiting for someone to respond to my messages. Hope I was able to help a little! :D
@@carlos.a02 Hey it's me from my main channel! I just checked and my comment with the links doesn't show up on alt accounts. Any idea how to fix this? 😅
I think for a lore explanation that definitely doesn't need to exist, we can just say the robots are mech suits that can either work purely autonomously or be piloted by a human. So the ones that bleed/talk have humans in them, but the ones that don't are just robots.
21:54 Upon reaching this part of the video, I had flashbacks to playing HL2 via Garry's Mod, because when I loaded up the first map, G-Man would be speaking German!
12:52 never in my life would I have expected to hear those lines in a RUclips video dissecting the quirks of the German version of Hl:op force
Very hopeful to eventually see a hl2 vid! good stuff man!
The translations of the game names at the start of the video just sent me, great video man
You absolutely have to make the Quirks of German Half-Life 2 and it's episdoes!
Hey there! Once again excellent work on this video essay of the hl spinoffs. As a German I also want to thank you for making the English half-life community familiar with the German dubs. I really enjoy watching your videos and can´t wait for the one about hl2 and it´s comically bad voice acting! :D
It is quite sad that such an impressive and gamechanging game didn´t get the best treatment, when it comes to the voice acting.
And GLaDOS still manages to put those two together pretty well ;)
Anyways, that is basically all I wanted to say. Keep up the great content! Bye bye! :D
Wow those are a lot of rechtschreibfehlers I only noticed in the nachhinein! I sure hope it´s still readable :)
@@GermanPeter are you gonna also make quirks of German left 4 dead 2 and German Black Mesa?
Robots with humans inside of them, what a horrifying mental image. But it would kind of work, that's true.
Literally the fnaf springlock suits
Always want more content from German Peter!
I really like this type of content keep it up!
21:54 Upon reaching this part of the video, I had flashbacks to playing HL2 via Garry's Mod, because when I loaded up the first map, G-Man would be speaking German! I am not German, I do not entirely speak German, I have next to nothing to do with Germany as a country, but he still said the intro in German.
I love the thumbnails to these videos, makes me want to visit Germany!
Warten hat sich gelohnt! Ein Video zum Deutschen Half-Life 2 wäre auch nice!
I can't wait for you to cover the differences between German HL2 vs, well, regular HL2. I played a lot more of that game than HL1 and its expansion titles.
of course I want to see your video about Half-Life 2
Das war eine gute idee die Texte von Odis mit smilies zu verziehren, ey ich hab mich weg geschossen deswegen xD
Manche Leute können einfach mit Smileys reden. Otis ist so einer.
Honey, wake up
Peter made a new german video
Literally just found the other video, didn't even had to wait lol
It seems like the localization was a lot lazier in German Blue Shift.
Half-Life: Otis
coming up 2034
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS i saw ur half life quirks videos and i loved ur channel i would love to see half life 2 too!
german half-life 2 would be a banger, go for it
I wonder if there's also quirks of the German versions of Portal 1 and 2.
14:30 that particular door at the ending training course is a scripted easter egg. if you try to open it too many times, the announcer insults you. most likely an oversight.
That makes sense, but the VOX is also English later (in the intro before the elevator falls down).
17:47 That line is actually really sad given the greater context of what’s about to happen to the world…
man, those drill sergeants were really impressive
Hell yeah, German HL2 vid would be awesome.
Adrian's even wearing a German gas mask in the thumbnail. Nice detail!
I’d love to learn more about German half life :)
I never played HL myself, but I love these videos. Keep it up
Of course I wanna see German half life 2
I like how German versions reject death and replace it with "souls getting out of the body".
Hey .. there is a very interesting choice in the german RTS Conquest Earth version where they replaced the human render with black monsters
if you happen to stumble on the race selection screen of the german version i would love to see that creepy thing again it horrified me in my childhood
I would absolutely love a video about HL 2 and the Episodes
It's called half-life because that's how much tine it takes to figure out if it's a soldier or a robot
