70% of the south didn’t have slavery and the union didn’t fight to end slavery. The union had 7 slave states in 1864 and even made a new slave state in 1863 called West Virginia. First line was wrong.

“I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Africans, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.” - Abraham Lincoln

“All the Congresses on earth can’t make the negro anything else than what he is; he must be subject to the white man, or he must amalgamate or be destroyed. Two such races cannot live in harmony save as master and slave.” - Union General Sherman

“It is however of primary importance that the Africans should know that the service is voluntary on their part. As to the name of the troops, the general thinks you cannot do better than consult the men themselves. His only objection to calling them colored troops was that the enemy had selected that designation for theirs. But this has no weight against the choice of the troops and he recommends that they be called colored or if they prefer, they can be called simply Confederate troops or volunteers. Everything should be done to impress them with the responsibility and character of their position, and while of course due respect and subordination should be exacted, they should be so treated as to feel that their obligations are those of any other soldier and their rights and privileges dependent in law & order as obligations upon others as upon theirselves. Harshness and contemptuous or offensive language or conduct to them must be forbidden and they should be made to forget as soon as possible that they were regarded as menials. You will readily understand however how to conciliate their good will & elevate the tone and character of the men” - Robert E Lee to General Ewell on black confederate soldiers

Look at that. They where freed at the end of the war not at the start. Why would you say that war was fought over slavery? It was declared over more taxes.

This is such baloney. You would have to have a purposeful ignorance of history to think that the major cause of the US Civil war was over anything other than Slavery.

When did it say they were freed? All that happened was a paper got signed. That comment was 2 years ago hopefully you’re not still ignorant

probably not much. Sharecropping was a rung on the ladder above slaver. Then you had the Jim Crow laws. I would have left to go out west or North

Yes, the idea of slavery was no longer in vouge in the western industrial world. Despite what other commenters have said here, trying the same old lost-cause nonsense arguments, the Union definitely fought to end slavery. Although for many maintaining the Union was the primary goal. Fighting for equality of all people though was not necessarily in the minds of many union soldiers. Those formally in the bondage of slavery may be set free. However being seen as equals was a battle which was - and perhaps still is being fought today.

@@BigHorseFilm The thing that bothers me, is Lee said to except the outcome of the war. But most didn't, Like Gorden he became governor and started a bunch of Jim Crow laws to keep people basically in slavery. He wasn't the only one. It was just let's keep the system going as long as we can. It really makes me sick.
