in order of appearance (surnames at that moment): Sari Kaasinen with triangle, Kirsi Kähkönen with washing board next to Sari, Janne Lappalainen on klarinet, Pauliina Luukkanen in fiddle and Mari Kaasinen on accordion. Indeed, ms Lerche is there on the fiddle and Janne had hair at that time. Derived from the inner sleeve of the second album, of which a scan was available on the fan club's website. This song is not on any of the first 2 albums.
This is just what I was searching for! Niilo Kopenen speaks the Karelian dialect of Finnish, and served in Karelia during reconstruction after the second world war. He received a PhD from Harvard, has been a leader in education, Alaska government, and founded the Chena Ridge Monthly Meeting of Friends. I would like to find a way to share it with him in the Pioneers Home, Fairbanks Alaska. Jim Baldridge
Yes it is indeed the first (school kid) form of Värttinä. Several key persons from the second (professional band) incarnation can be seen here already - I see at least: Sari, Mari, Kirsi and Minna - I also think the one guy sitting in a chair in the front line is probably Janne. There might be others.
I think one remarkable thing to be remember is that when Värttinä recorded this folk song in 1985, there were still a significant number of people born in Finnish Karelia before the 2. World War, who had learned these songs actually as folk songs.
Hyvä suomalainen meininki! Kun elämänkokemus on tunnelmallinen ja kulkee omia svengaavimpia (siis kaikista toimivimpia) kohtia pitkin, niin syntyy jotain tuontapaista...
Isn't the young lady on the left of the washboard player, the same one who is in the Seelenikoi, Aijo, and Oi Dai videos? On the right side? Many years later? Love this band, I know maybe 10 words in Finnish. Wonder if washboard playing started in Finland. Cajun bands and Jug bands here in America sometimes use them.
I think I recognize Sari (with triangle) and Mari (accordion) and the rightmost singer (beside the washboard player) looks quite like Minna Rautiainen. Wonder is there anyone else from the 'adult' version of the band? Or any other ones that became professionals on their own. At least the violinist seems to have some potential.
@MinerWalt Yes - could be indeed her. At least according the info on Värttinä's web pages she was already a member at that time. As was also Janne Lappalainen who thus could be the clarinet (?) player, but he just doesn't look like him to me. Also Lassi Logrén was a member at that time but I'm pretty sure he is not either of the guys here.
Isn`t Pauliina Lerche (her second name wasn't Lerche those days) the one, who holds a puppy in her hand which has the word "Pauliina" on her forehead, written on a band of rubber?
@MinerWalt Yes you might be right about Pauliina also - I just can't tell who that might be, if anyone. BTW I just noticed that at the very begin and end of the vid you see a guy sitting in a chair with a bozouki like instrument - that could/would/should be Janne. But why is he sitting - some injury?
@Eneri Giilaan I'll try a comment or two again, ones I added yesterday do not show. Anyway, I am pretty sure Janne is in the back playing clarinet. Why? Look at his nose as he plays at :30 - :36, forget the mop top hairdo, just his face, nose, mouth, cheeks; looks like Janne to me (it may not be easy to see on this clip, but I watched it on the "Archive Live" DVD and it's much clearer). We never get a good look at the seated fellow with the string instrument, but I believe that is Olli Varis playing a mandola, the neck looks to me too short to be an Irish bouzouki. Also I believe Janne came up as a woodwind player (if I'm not mistaken), and there is no one else in the official fan page list of members of early Värttinä who is credited with playing woodwinds, whereas Olli is credited mandolin, & of course the mandola & bouzouki are in the mandolin family. Pics found on the web of Olli years later performing with his wife show him playing guitar sitting down, so that seems to be his preference. A photo of him a little later with the Helsinki Mandoliners looks very much like this fellow, holding an instrument that looks like this one. All of the above makes me pretty confident of that identification.

This video is so nostalgic to me, my dad would often show it to me and my siblings on the computer.

This trad. song has been sung also with lyrics "raastejuustoa, raastejuustoa, isäntä se raapii persettään".
Yes, I think so.

Ja heter Risto, and proud of Karelians
@MinerWalt
I believe she is rather board of her job.
I guess Pauliina Lerche (Luukkanen) is fourth (or third) to the left of the girl with the doll
aha, now I see :)

3 chords are rarely fun.
Videon alussa näkyvä teksti lienee virheellinen, koska bändin nimi ei kai ikinä ole ollut Värttinät.
Apua.
Can someone please tell me what the song is about and/or what the lyrics are? I like it a lot.
The title is "Boys of Karelia". Basically they sing about their good spirits of mind and humour.
Oh, cool, kiitos paljon for answering! :)
Where's Mari? Is she the accordionist?
Isn't that puppy really a doll?!
Which is Mari? :)
At the left - playing the accordion.
