And people absolutely pay those prices for them.
And the prices are low balled.
I used to run a card shop. Ive seen a notebook like this before. It never gets old. I'm in awe every time I lay eyes on a collection like this.
I highly doubt this is real. It makes no sense a set collector would have them in the binder like this. I can maybe see all the power 9 together (though usually you would have the 3 blue spells on a different page then the artifacts, since you sort by color), but why are the basic lands on the other side ? Why is there one single dual land among them ? You would either sort by alphabet or have duals together and basics together. On the other hand if you just wanna show the crown jewels, and hence have the volcanic island on the other page, why have the basics there ? This makes no sense.
@@terryfeynman They might have only owned one of the duals. Those basics are in alphabetical order by the way, so it's possible the binder went Power 9 -> lands -> color wheel, or some other thing. Also, Antiques Roadshow is on PBS, not the History Channel, they don't DO fakes. FWIW, I think the fact that those cards aren't double-sleeved is pretty good indication that she's telling the truth. I feel like if someone knew enough to get high quality fakes in this day and age, they'd know enough to make it look like they were taking effort to protect said cards, not store them in loose pages stored in a binder you got for $6 at Office Max.
@@ccggenius I believe you are right. Plus there was clearly another page before the power 9s, probably in a pathetic attempt to protect those cards, assuming the truth was told and they have been sitting in a box for the last 25+ years. o>O
Honestly if he really cracked those from packs they might have gotten bindered in the 90s and left that way since then. Back then we absolutely kept sets in binders. People who transitioned over from baseball cards might not be super organized and would have a binder that looked like this, just artifacts together, lands together, valuable/trade bait cards together etc. and not really organized any deeper than that.
People knew what the power 9 was but that whole page would have been worth like $100 back then. I didn't start until revised and even that late I remember seeing moxes in shop cases for $20-30 each. I know people who kept all the duals and everything in binders, and when they got multiples they'd keep playsets all in one pocket together. This power 9 page wouldn't have been a real big deal. We all thought they were going to end up like baseball cards or pogs or beanie babies in the long run so it was just having fun for however long it lasted.
But yeah this binder absolutely rings true to me. Even the wear on the cards is legitimate play wear, somebody shuffled these up and played a hundred games with them. Counterfeiters don't do that.
Also there's 10 dual lands and 9 pockets per page. If you have all 10 you always have 1 left over that you have to just stick somewhere or give it its own page or something. Volcanic island is the last one alphabetically so was a common choice to be the odd one out.
I'd guess he had dual lands up front to protect the power 9 because duals were like $4-5, or maybe just put them there so people wanting to trade would see them first because they were highly traded. Then power 9, then had one dual left over and instead of wasting the page just started up the rest of the other lands in the set.
He is so excited. I don't blame him. I know nothing about magic cards, but when you love something it's a great feeling sharing it.

I love how the guy who owns this binder clearly knows how valuable they all are based on how they are organized, especially with that Black Lotus literally right next to the Mox Emerald
i know a bit about them, but is the emerald really rarer than the other four gems? i wonder why. i thought those 5 were equally rare?
if he did, he would have had it graded, not in a binder that can add wear to it.
Even when he bought them or obtained them in the 90s he would have known that those two were the most rare without having any other indication of their future worth
He put the Power 9 all on the same page right in front. He had a plan.
The mox emerald is the second-least expensive of the moxen tho... Sapphire, Jet, and Ruby are all worth more, in that specific order. The only one that falls shorter than Emerald is the Pearl.
It's so bizarre to finally be able to listen to an expert at antiques roadshow and say "yep, this guy knows his stuff".

As a TCG collector even looking at this cards in real life is an experience for itself. I got to look at a black lotua in bad condition at a shop in tokio and was just so happy
I’ve played magic in the 90s and I’ve never seen a full set of power 9. Seeing at 9 at one time is like you’re at a museum. You’re gonna have to go to a convention to see a full power 9. You can go to all the card shops in your city and won’t even see all power 9 in one spot let alone a lotus. The lotus card is so beautiful, I’ve seen the black lotus one time in my life when I was playing this game in my younger years and that card is like a piece of art.
My heart stopped when I saw that black-border Black Lotus.
I assume you don't have the memory of roughly shuffling these cards on pizza grease covered tables then just throwing an elastic around the deck and tossing it in a backpack to scrounge up 3 bucks so you can maybe if you're lucky get a Shivan Dragon and not some stupid artifact mana trash.

Also, the guy really knows his stuff! I was impressed.
This guy is the best expert I've ever watched. "Power nine baby, unbelievable" 😆
I'm very glad the Roadshow individual gave such an eloquent description of the cards in the binder, particularly the Power 9, to help give an apt description of why they're so valuable and sought after. Expected cringe, got actually nice content that, had I not known of the Power 9 and the ABU print runs already, would've been very informative!
He actually had mistakes in there, for example unlimited was despite it´s name anything but unlimited. It is estimated we have about 3-3.5 k of each beta rare and about 17.5k of each unlimited one. So there is only about 6 times as many unlimited cards as there is beta cards.
Also the way the cards are sorted in the binder makes me highly suspicious this was done to present them for the show. No set collector would sort his cards that way, it makes no sense.
@@terryfeynman oh sure, I was certain the unlimited info was overstated as well.

A foil 1st edition grade 10 charizard sold for $250k within the last year
True. Remember that many expensive paintings are just paint on canvas.
It's just scarcity. These cards can never be reprinted, and there are only so many in existence. The price is simply whatever the richest interested party is willing to pay. It only takes one fan with an 8 figure bank balance and bingo, $100k is really not a big thing at that level.
@@Redskies453I agree with the scarcity and the subjectiveness of the value. However, I think these cards can be reprinted but obviously the first cards would have some valuable traits compared to their reprints such as their originality and physical features that only those cards would possess. The reprints would have value as well; just not as much. Take holographic "Charizard" cards for example from Pokemon TCG base set and "XY Evolutions" set. The reprint from "XY Evolutions" has considerable value given the right condition and print (google shopping). Will they be reprinted is unknown. Thank you for taking the time to read.
@@garcia-buckner7702 There is a legal issue with reprinting some cards. The publisher has stated that they will not reprint any of the cards on their "reserved list" and there is a legal argument with precedent that this constitutes a passive contract with current owners of the cards to protect the value of the cards. If they were to reprint those specific cards they may be liable to compensate collectors for the loss in value.

@@FANBOY41 Are stores not shut down where you live? Game stores are the definition of non-essential, and this has all been a pretty big deal in the community at large because most game stores don't have the financial resources to survive being shut down for a month.
@@FANBOY41 I agree it's a great game, but not so sure it's better than ever. Standard has been a mess the last 4 years or so much they have to ban due to power creep - since you wrote this there's been four sets in a row they messed up and had to ban or errata (oko, cat oven, once upon a time, uro, the entire companion mechanic and now omnath). that was the most sarcastic "ya its for the kids college savings" i've ever seen lmao
In 2021, these cards have absolutely skyrocketed. That collection is now worth 2-3x the value he stated.
For.real!!!
I started playing during beta.. I eventually sold all my cards including the power nine for 2700 dollars to buy my aunts 86 Chevy celebrity station wagon.. I absolutely hated it but it had 12000 miles on it and I needed a car.. what a mistake.
MTG could have been the next beanie babies there was no way of knowing card games would be popular to that degree. You made the right decision with the info you had at the time.
Hindsight is a bitch. If you could have known the future, you also could have also spent that $2700 on $0.50 apple stock in 1993 and it'd be worth $718k today.
Timmy's Investment Emporium would have taken care of you...
How dare this dude give a value without even looking at the cards
they probably looked and appraised everything beforehand
I am 99 percent sure the collection is worth wayyyy more. Black Lotus alone…
Maybe they’re in only ‘ok’ condition which kinda makes it even more impressive.
I was thinking the same thing while watching, maybe that guy will stalk the auction and snatch it up for himself lol
They look better than ok, but yeah, Today that's worth way more.
@@madjoe8622 dude that’s what I thought too. Like even for not mint or whatever they still look so good. Jealous.
This is one of the only videos on youtube I keep watching from time to time that isn’t a music video lol
This expert is one of the more charismatic and entertaining people I’ve seen on the antique roadshow. I could listen to him grade cards all day!
I could watch his dense beard all day.
Those need to be properly graded. Thats well over half a million.
This guy is a new guy but I'm obsessed. He is so fun!
Wow... he played Magic The Gathering tournaments and STILL got married. Respect
Got to see the power nine in real life once, in college circa 2016. I was part of a casual MTG group in one of the rec rooms, and one day a new guy casually flashed those cards from his crummy, flaking, slightly bent plastic binder that looked like it had been forgotten under his bed for a decade until that day. We were like wait just a WHAT?! WHY DON'T THOSE HAVE DUST JACKETS? ARE YOU INSANE? PUT THOSE AWAY AND GET THEM TO AN APPRAISER YESTERDAY.
We were also sort of nervous because that school was in a high crime area, and there was a real chance of him getting robbed if the wrong person knew what he had.
Never saw him again.
Show the rest of the binder wtf.
Nah, let's do a close up of basic lands like, 15 times!
@@FatalPapercutz These shows for the lowest common denominator are often disappointing :( I mean, he said that people would "summon spells" and "drain life" out of each other, but almost all he showed was mana sources
If you listened closely he said it's the whole beta set. You can Google the cards man.
@@FatalPapercutz At what point did they close up on basic lands? Those are all original dual lands lmfao
@@maddeeps5520 There was a close up of basic forests at one point. But even Beta basics are worth a lot.
This dude is totally a Yu-Gi-Oh player at heart
Dude (her husband) knows what he has. All the Power 9 are on the same page.
that kinda makes sense, what makes me suspicious of this collection is that the volcanic island is with the basic lands. Either he only had that one dualland, which makes the set worth a whole lot less, since the duallands are in the same price range as some of the power and thus a lot of value is in the duals, or this is not a real set, and they just put cards in the binder together to show off for "reality" tv.
Obviously. This wasn't some accidental find. The guy probably only brought them in so his wife could get featured on the show.
@@snorgonofborkkad nobody said it was an accidental find, so wtf are you talking about ? She said he was trying to collect the whole set. Also from the way she talks he is probably dead. She keeps using past tense when mentioning him.
@@terryfeynman I noticed that too. So either a death or divorce. I would say death as if it was a divorce I can bet he would have taken them....Would be nice to know as if it was death the husband left her with a gold mine.
This dude has awesome energy and a sharply lined up beard. My dawg ✊🏽
Wife gets back home, walks through the door.
Husband - “Told you so.”
I saw the Black Lotus and my eyes exploded out of my head
Dude, that beard and hairdo screams "I know everything about MAGIC cards"
And lisp
@Anonymous man you killed me with this comment LMAO
They used to call that the Gay Nazi look.
Forget the Power 9, that dude has the Power Beard - that thing looks like it's painted onto his face.
