  • China's demand for durian keeps rising but Vietnamese farmers are worried it may be very hard for Vietnam's supply to keep up in the long run. CNA's Tung Ngo has more.

In Malaysia, we don't grow durians near downstream river, let alone near to the sea or in the middle of a small island. We always plant it on the hills, or upstream. I believe Vietnam do this because it's the only areas with climate closest to rainforest.

In 2023, more than 90% of Vietnam's total rice exports, valued at $4.78 billion USD, came from the Mekong Delta region. Plus, Vietnam exported durians worth $2.3 billion USD in the same year. Vietnam is worried about Cambodia's construction of the Funan Techo canal, which makes sense. The money Cambodia pays Vietnam for transportation fees is much less compared to what Vietnam earns from exporting rice and durians from the Mekong Delta region.

Why i dont like my country ( Vietnam) to grow durian:
    1. Too much chemical involved in the process of growing, that poisons the soil, the water, people health.
    2. Too much water needed for irrigation, mostly ground water .. eventually not sustainable.
    3. Deforestation, as durian trees prefer hilly landscape, people turn whatever forest left into plantation, especially in central highland.
    4. Dependent on one market, which will lead to economic disaster.
The recent heat wave is not caused by nature, its man made problem. We need to restore the forest, find more peaceful way to live with mother earth. We cant just run after money and be greedy with no limit. How much is enough ?!

Can't Vietnam build their own reservoirs within their country to store water instead of only depending on the Mekong river for fresh water? Funny how people still have to draw water directly from Mekong River for their own daily use. Seems to be lacking in infrastructure.

China also has cheapest public transport , electricity, water in the world. For example, people in Shanghai have higher disposable income than people in Tokyo.

The lack of water is killing Vietnamese Mekong delta. So durian is first victim of this water shortage. China with its hundreds of dams upstream, Laos ‘dams, and sea level rising are contributing to Vietnam current water problem. In the near future, Cambodia with China’s finance will dig a canal from their Mekong portion of the river to divert additional Mekong river water to Vietnam. Vietnamese rice and fruit farmers in the Mekong river are screwed.
