絢爛豪華な山車がゆく祭礼絵巻　国指定重要無形民俗文化財
ユネスコ無形文化遺産登録　川越氷川祭の山車行事
川越まつり（川越氷川祭の山車行事）は、10月14日に氷川神社が執行する「例大祭」を根源として、直後に行われる「神幸祭」や「山車行事（祭礼）」から成り立っている。
「神幸祭」は、慶安元年（1648）に、当時の川越藩主、松平伊豆守信綱が氷川神社に神輿・獅子頭・太鼓等を寄進し、祭礼を奨励したことが始まり。
川越まつりは江戸の天下祭（神田明神、赤坂日枝神社の各祭礼の総称）の影響を強く受けて発展し、祭で曳き出される山車の形も天下祭の流行を敏感に感じ取りながら変化していった。
精巧な人形を乗せた絢爛豪華な山車が、小江戸川越の象徴である蔵造りの町並みを中心に、町中を曳行（えいこう）される。
何台もの山車が辻で相対し、すれ違うさまは、そのスケールの大きさに、見物客を圧倒する。
川越まつり最大のみどころは「曳っかわせ（ひっかわせ)」。
向かい合う数台の山車が、囃子（笛、太鼓、鉦、踊り）で競演し、
まつり人たちは提灯を高々と振り上げ、歓声を上げる。
とくに夜の「曳っかわせ」は最高潮の盛り上がりを見せる。
川越まつりは、江戸「天下祭」の様式や風流を今に伝える貴重な都市型祭礼として370年の時代を超えて守り、 川越独特の特色を加えながら発展してきた。
平成17年（2005）、｢川越氷川祭の山車行事｣として 国指定重要無形民俗文化財となった。
また、平成28年（2016）には、「川越氷川祭の山車行事」として、ユネスコ無形文化遺産「山・鉾・屋台行事」に登録された。

Kawagoe Hikawa Festival Float Event (Registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage)
The Kawagoe Festival (Kawagoe Hikawa Matsuri float event) is based on the "regular festival" held on October 14 at Hikawa Shrine, and consists of the "Shinkosai" and "float events (rites)" that take place immediately after the festival.
The Shinko Matsuri began in 1648, when Matsudaira Izumori Nobutsuna, then lord of the Kawagoe domain, donated a portable shrine, lion's head, drums, etc. to Hikawa Shrine and encouraged the festival.
The Kawagoe Festival developed under the strong influence of the Tenka Matsuri in Edo (the collective name for the festivals of Kanda Myojin and Akasaka Hie Shrine), and the shapes of the floats pulled at the festival changed as the festival became more sensitive to the trends of the Tenka Matsuri.
Gorgeous floats with elaborate dolls on them are pulled through the town, centering on the warehouse-zukuri townscape that is the symbol of Koedo-Kawagoe.
The sheer scale of the festival overwhelms onlookers as the floats pass each other at street corners.
The highlight of the Kawagoe Festival is the "Hikkawase.
Several floats facing each other compete with each other with musical accompaniment (flutes, drums, gongs, and dances).
The festival goers raise their lanterns high in the air and shout with delight.
The nighttime "Hikikkawase" is especially exciting.
Kawagoe Matsuri has developed over the past 370 years as a valuable urban festival that conveys the style and customs of the "Tenka Matsuri" of Edo, while adding unique Kawagoe characteristics.
In 2005, the festival was designated a nationally important intangible folk cultural property as "Kawagoe Hikawa Festival Float Event.
In 2016, the festival was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage "Yama, Hoko, Yatai Event" as "Kawagoe Hikawa Matsuri no Yama Yatai Event".
