  • Mark continues with the repair of the 1977 vintage SU-3500 Amplifier, which has blown both outputs. A full strip down is required, and he also needs to find a replacement switch cap. Can you still buy spares for these???

Here in the states, there are plenty of repair shops and electricians who are qualified to repair various electronics, but Mark is the only one I've ever seen that has a full suite of DIY fabrication tools and supplies, as well as the skills to create rare parts on the fly. What an incredible wealth of knowledge. Having a repair guy with Mark's skills living or working in your hometown is a vintage hi-fi enthusiast's dream.

Over performing caps across the board can be a sign that they're starting to develop parallel resistance and leak DC, they appear to be higher values because they take longer to charge due to the parallel resistance taking some of the charge current the meter uses to measure the charge time. You should really also do a DC leakage test on them as well,

    Great work, Mark!
I like that you don't just blindly replace caps; this has become too much of a disease among amateurs/dabblers (shows you're obviously not one of them). In fact, most of those pale blue Matsushita caps are of extremely high quality; it's just a small batch of them that leak and get corroded.
It's usually better to leave them in, because they were overbuilt (unlike modern ones that often are very near their tolerance limits).
