    I wish another manufacture would make a monochromatic camera. The detail and tonality is simply stunning. Unfortunatly this camera is out of the price range of 99% of photographers. Come on Fuji or Sony. Fuji is suppose to be retro and appeal to street photographers. What are you waiting for Fuji???

    For most of us, the B&W conversion in lightroom is plenty good enough. However, it’s not gonna rival a dedicated black and white camera like the M10 monochrom. I shot with a M246 for a few days previously, and the black and white files do look quite a bit more pleasing than those from my M240. RUclips quality doesn’t do the M10M justice, if you want to see what it can do check out full resolution files online - they do look incredible. With that said, it’s an extremely niche product with a ridiculous price tag. If you think a B&W converted XT3 file looks the same, then this camera isn’t for you, or most of us for that matter.

    I'd love to rent an M10 and M10 Monochrom and a lens and do my own testing in a controlled setting. I don't doubt the claimed benefits of monochrome. It's something I want to see for myself. I also wish Fuji would get into the monochrome game. I would consider a monochrome X100* if it existed.

      get a foveon sensor camera, it does the same thing... and does not cost that much. Bayer sensor images are always interpolated at least by 2x (green channel), that's why they always look mushy. In reality, its more than 2x, as red & blue are interpolated by 4x. And when you then end up interpolating the image even more for the print, it looks like crap.
      The other thing you can test is pixel shift in sony a7 3 & 4, that gives out also the same results as B&W sensor or a foveon.
      Basically MP values on bayer sensors are fake.

      For the object that you are directly interested in, a properly calibrated RF-lens combination gives you precise result. If you make sure with your eyes, the image will be certain.
      To have an idea of what kind of DOF you are getting, that takes some time to memorize. After knowing which point is in the center of the DOF, and how big is the DOF, you know which things are in focus.
      It will stick to your head naturally after you've done it a few times.

    QUESTION: Are these three channel RGB files? Or not? Thanks, I did download the spec sheet, and it seems to me that these are not RGB files. If you could confirm that or not I'd appreciate it. Love BH!

    • @BandH
      @BandH  4 года назад +1

      While your post-processing photo editor will have the RGB channels listed (as will any image brought into a photo editor), there is no inherent color information in a Leica M10 Monochrom image file. As indicated in the camera's press release, every pixel is completely dedicated to recording luminance data, and there is no RGB color Bayer filter array in front of the sensor. As such, no color data is recorded; only luminance data is captured.

    • @johnsmith1474
      @johnsmith1474 4 года назад

      @@BandH - Thank you BH. Yes single channel, as I suspected via the tech sheet, but I had to ask make sure. In the meantime I've downloaded some older Mononchrom files, there is no color data. This is dismaying for creative artists, of course.
      For advanced digital landscape photographers, color balance adjustment layer editing is standard operating procedure. It is analogous to the classic effects of the #2 yellow or red filters in old school B&W film. In order to create a dramatic Ansel Adams type cloud/sky relationship, one must increase the red channel and diminish the blue. Other operations in Photoshop also require color channels for instance creating fine masks for hair.
      So, next obvious question; lacking color channel data, how does a user creatively control the tones? Are we back to using yellow and red filters over the lens? This might even be fun for an old cat like me, but I see nothing about it in the literature.
      One can put great trust in Leica to build a compromise "look" into the camera algorithms, unfortunately the color luminance balance that works for skin tones is the opposite of what works for blue sky landscapes. This is why experts will tell you that the absolute best digital B&W is created via three channel color files, with edited color balance luminance values.
      The answer here may be, "Hey it's a Leica, if you don't get it buy a Canon." I understand that the handling, where less is more, is supreme as is the object itself. But I don't agree that less data is more imagery if you know what you are doing in digital editing. Any thoughts?

      @@oliverrichetti3736 the M9m was announced 8 years ago, that's why it"s cheaper (those are used prices)...and it had CCD 18MP sensor. The type 246 is a color 24MP CMOS sensor minus the color filter array (basically a modified color sensor). The M10m has a purpose built 40MP CMOS sensor designed specifically for grayscale capture. There are some that would argue the CCD M9 produces a unique look that the CMOS sensors can't produce. @@spoolindsm127 That is a good argument. I'm sure RUclips has compressed the life out of the image. One would need to see it in person to compare. However, he must have known that. So showing it on small resolution and on youtube that is infamous for its compression artifacts, seems like a weak argument for such a bold statement. But what we don't need the visual example for is the statement that somehow this print has more tonality than any other camera DSLR, or Mirror less he said, can reproduce. And that is just BS statement that has no basis in reality. Because a) there is nothing about the print or images I've seen shot with that camera that suggest some kind of mysterious tonality that is not available on other cameras. or could not be achieved in post production and b) lets say there is technicality something that gives advantage to this camera, I would like to know how he measures it with prints like the one he showed? He can't. Its total BS statement, much like Game Changer buzz words. Just another salesmen with big ego and no integrity.

      Micro-contrast/tonality depends largely on the lens, little on the sensor. Leica is known for this specific aspect of lens making. Adapting results are worse (examples are everywhere).
      Also since they claim "the sensor is designed ground up for B&W", maybe the sensor has a slight edge over existing implementations.

      This is so called LEICA buisness model: by removing some functions they are rising (considerably) the cost. Removing colors, removing back screen removing red LEICA badge and so on 😅
      They are calling that "pure photography experience", and it works pretty well, hipster's buying it and later on justifying that how it's "WORTH" and how that "CHANGED THEY'RE LIFES" in various online videos and articles. 21 century bs 🤓

      Leicas are top quality handmade luxury products. I got rid of my entire Canon 5D III system to move to Leica. Image quality is at least as good, if not better, and the size and weight is so much less.

    My Nikon FM2 with an Ilford BW film 30 years did all these. And this is a "game changer" ? Total melodrama, nostalgia pretentious bullshit.
