no, you don't have to be a gymnast, some things like the vault are easier if you are a gymnast, but where i do it, we have people who have never done any kind of sport before and are in theire 20s and they can do it!! sorry for my english I'm from germany
you don't need to be a gymnast, since you are a dancer you should have the flexibility to do German wheel. all you really need is a strong core and a good sense of balance.
