I'm from Brazil and folk music for me is beauty in its most raw form. I think american folk music and south american folk music, like brazilian music, has more similarities than most people think. the hemisphere is different, but the soul is the same.
***** Yes Samul, i agree, there is a lot of similarities in the folk music of all america. (SOUTH, NORTH) For some strange reason, this music reminds me of the music that is made in Los Santos, a province of Panamá. What i found most interesting is the conversation between blacks, indians and european traditions in a musical idiom. There is no falsehood, nor a commercial pose in this music. They just want to express the reality around them.
I had been a fan of country blues music for many years and only "discovered" Dock Boggs last summer when I bought Robert Crumb's book "Heroes of Blues,Jazz & Country" which comes with a CD featuring Dock on 1 track "Sugar Baby". That did it - I had to get a Banjo. You could call his music folk , blues or country. It is the most inspirational sound I have heard in a long time, that really cuts deep. Further to this clip referencing his influences, it appears in other sources around the internet that as a boy Dock followed around a black guitar player/ street performer called "Go Lightnin'" , a blue eyed, black banjo picker called Jim White and a local black string band. Have a search around the 'net and there are all kinds of tales, like what happened to his original open back banjo from the 20's, his wild youth , bootlegging and run ins with the law etc. Fascinating man and a true original.
Well keep at it sir, when I left America in 2011 I had to sale my banjo and fiddle, and I have not got either one as a replacement yet. You a fan of Woody Guthrie? I know a bunch of his songs been performing his music since August 2005.
Heinrich Bachmann I will keep at it, been trying clawhammer and 2 & 3 finger picking but without the picks, because I just can't seem to adapt to them. Also tried a little bottleneck. I hope you get another Instrument soon! Sorry I'm aware of who Woody was but know little of his music.
I always thought of Dock as a Holy Man or Spiritual Teacher, he was like a Guru of Banjo. A Banjo Guru. Dock Boggs you banjo and tunes had wisdom blessings
Dock Boggs and Eastern Orthodox Music would have loved each other. Like Eastern Orthodox Music is Byzantine Music or Liturgical Music. I love Dock Boggs Banjo and still do.
Dock Boggs and Roscoe Holcomb are considered Orthodox Banjo. Orthodox is a Mystical word for Old Time it come from Orthodox Church. Orthodox Banjo is Old Time Banjo 2 finger or 3 finger
Sorry, I don't think much of this, his banjo playing sounds crude, and he doesn't sing, he wails. The melody is lost in the wailing they all sound alike!
I play the banjo and his playing is anything but crude, same for his singing. Its exactly because he "wailes" which make the songs sound so haunting. Its very hard to mimmick his unique style, harder thsn you think.
I m from Panamá in latin america and i think this music is beautiful without no comparison. Is sublime in all the sense of word

False. The sheriff was killed in a gunfight some years later after the incident.

Thanks for the information!
where can we watch the video of him performing without someone talking over it?
Gabriel Kyne There were some but they have been taken down.
Mr. Kyne, there is a DVD available online called Shady Grove of him and others like Kilby Snow, I have it and it's worth every penny.

Dock Boggs 3 finger is much better than Bluegrass and Earl Scruggs.
Sorry, I don't think much of this, his banjo playing sounds crude, and he doesn't sing, he wails. The melody is lost in the wailing they all sound alike!
Well I as a musician can tell Dock is no crude fraud his skills are not easy to master.
I play the banjo and his playing is anything but crude, same for his singing. Its exactly because he "wailes" which make the songs sound so haunting. Its very hard to mimmick his unique style, harder thsn you think.
