I simply cannot believe neither my eyes, nor my ears. I've been watching this video I don't know how many times and I still marvel that such a treasure is right here on RUclips and is so wonderfully easy to be reached. Moreover, it seems this was not a lip sync but a live performance. It is distinctly different than the only studio recording of that song Boris ever made (Dobrowen, 1950), but it is even more powerful and more beautiful. God bless you, Gabba02, for having shared this video!
you probably dont care but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost my account password. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
Wonderful iconic, timeless Russian song sung by this Bulgarian bass singer! You can really feel the incredible effort of the workers in the shipyard hawling, lifting, using all their combined perspiring team strength and spirit in their shared work to keep industry flowing. Bravo! Boris Christoff.
Rest in Peace Boris Christoff, the shining star of Bulgarian Musicians. Eastern Europe and the Balkans is the home of Labour Culture and Music, long live the Eastern people!
Man, just look at his posturing. It's not just the throat and lungs that make a great voice, he's taking intense pains to keep his body bent in just the right shapes to produce the best and most resonant tones he can.
The “noble posture,” as it’s called in the singing field, is all about opening the ribs for maximum lung expansion, maximum breath support, and maximum freedom of the throat, tongue, and jaw.
I saw this video for the first time over a year ago, and lost it, forgot the singer. As soon as I saw the title, and heard his voice, I knew I found what I'd been looking for. Such an amazing voice.
SALUDOS A TODOS DESDE MEDELLIN COLOMBIA.
Che grande voce! What an extraordinary basso Christoff was.Until recently,he and Pinza were my favorite bassos. But very recently I first heard the Russian basso profondo,Boris Shtokolov here on RUclips. His voice is just astounding and he was basically unknown to American audiences.
ivaan62, you have "thumbs up" from another Bulgarian. And I agree with every word you say. When a singer sings not only following the musical notes but also the language, he is a Maestro. Which Boris definetely is!
The spirit of the Slavian people in his voice !!! A marvellous interpretation of Christoff, for one song , which speaks about a very sad story ..it is not a revolutionary song , as many people believe but a very sad one . Alas , one of many such songs , the story of which took place in the shores of the most famous Russian river , which is Volga River !!!
Another , equally famous russian song with the Volga Boatmen is Stenka Razin !!!! Thanks Gabba02 for posting this video . You bring to my mind thousand of memories , all strictly connected with the Russian land !
Wow. Not only has my fascination with TF2 led me to this beautiful rendition of the song, it finally gave me the title to a tune (the "yo ho ho, ho" bit) that I've been wondering about for ages. You really do learn something new every day!
I'm Bulgarian and I speak and understand Russian quite well - I can assure you that his russian is perfect (unlike most Bulgarians). His Russian is close to the old slavorthodox interpretation - for example he does pronounse the 'ь' and thr 'ъ' at the end of the words - like the old russian and bulgarian writing --- "Ей ухнемъ". Some priests in the orthodox churches still speak and sing that way. Something else; his speaks (sings) Italian, French or German with a Russian accent
My Bulgarian cousins used to joke about faking it: you just (they said) stuck Russian endings on Bulgarian words... One of my cousins, though, had a Russian father, and did rather better.
Say what you will about people coming here because of the Heavy from TF2, if it weren't for that, there'd be some ignorant of this ballad. And being ignorant of it would undermind this man's bellowing vocals and the strain of the Volga Boatman. There's a lot of grief behind it, but it's meant to keep from losing morale. To keep pushing no matter the strain. Doesn't matter what brought you here, so long as it's appreciated
Unbelievable ! Never thought that an old fashioned song like this could have such an impact on me. Listen to Boris Christoff as Boris Godunov... I can only compare him to Fjodor Chaljapin !!!
Does it matter how his name is written? We all know who we are talking about and whose that magnificent voice belongs to? By the way, Boris has always been, and still is, much more popular outside Bulgaria and there his name is written like this.
Boris is perhaps te best bass singer ever. Shalyapin might have been better but there is too little audio record from him left to judge. Te voice of Boris is eternal. Ant tis performance, in particular, is cosmic!
Heavy like song.

And who doesn't like Heavy? ;)
His voice is extraordinarily powerful. No wonder he is considered one of the greatest bass in the 20th century.

he needed no lipsync.
He sings as if he is hauling the rope himself, his voice paints a lovely picture. Most enjoyable. Thank you for posting this.

Великолепен бас,голям певец!
Вече не се раждат такива певци.
Sad truth😢
Раждат се!

Bois Christoff a une voix magnifique, qui se rapproche des basses profondes.Bravo et merci pour cette interprétation.

He has an absolutely fantastic quality voice.
that's boris christoff singing!!! my favourite singer ever
His falsetto is a beautiful, nicely contrasting to his powerful bass.
Quelle voix merveilleuse !
I am glad you enjoyed it. I was very excited to get these two videos too.
BULGARIA IS A COUNTRY OF BEAUTIFUL VOICES !!! COUNTRY OF GREAT, GREAT, GREAT VOICES !!! GOD BLESS ALL BULGARIAN TALENTS !!!
Chaliapin, the time traveler, who bent space and time to deliver his rendition of this tune to the masses. Setting the standard yet to be matched.
Boris Kristoff și Leonid Haritonov ,patrimoniu universal.Slava lor vesnica!
I really like 2:55, where he says "volga" slightly diffirent than from before. The whole song feels more personal. Great performance.
Inspiration. We basses love other ones, simply because we realise how under-appreciated we are.
Tenor here, agreed, basses tend to be awesome and down to earth
I love basses! Amazing voices
Possibly the best-ever version of this superb song that I have ever heard!
I walked by his house in Plovdiv. I'm sad he's gone, he has dramatic flair that's missing in many modern operation basses.
*operatic
No Russian singer can sing Song of Volga Boatmen as perfect and EXCITING than Boris Christoff!!!
