    Remember also that you can set red to vintage on the back and then you have both presence knobs active when in red channel. They hit at different spots in the circuit and are also of different values. The orange presence pot will set the overall brightness of the power amp section and then the red's will adjust the midrange presence.

      @@gitarman666 I run it a few different ways. Either with shred on, bass at 25%, treble at 50% or below, and enough gain for good harmonics or I run bass at 0, treble at 65% and gain about the same. I always run the mid around 35% and EQ1 is scooper but depends more on which guitar I am playing. EQ2 has mids but is still, a bit scooped for solos. The other option is to throw a compressor in front of it. I use the Bogner Harlow pedal. Hope this helps. Also what pickups are you using? I find this amp really brings out the differences in pickups.

    One of the best amps I've heard on your channel. I really dislike Mesa's for the most part, but then I also owned them during a time when I felt like boosting an amp was sacrilege. To this day, I still don't care for the absolutely bonkers EQ that most Mesa's have. I feel like no amp should allow you to clip the preamp into farty garbage like they do, but this amp does sound undeniably great here, and if I got back into Mesa's again, which admittedly isn't going to happen, I'd probably go for this, or a rectoverb, and then boost it. I feel like Mesa Boogie's strength has always been in their marketing rather than their tone. They had 2 big hits in their day, the Mark IIC+ and the original Dual Recs, but aside from those, I feel like everything else has been a bunch of people trying to convince themselves that the "tone" matches the marketing wank, and it never does. The 5150's, the SLO's, the ENGL's, those things have tone for days, and it doesn't take a PhD in electrical engineering and 2 years of experience to dial in the EQ.

    • @JamesSClapperton
      @JamesSClapperton Год назад +2

      This may be the very best description of the mess experience in the 2000’s. I had the exact same experience. NOBODY front loaded their amps when I lived in LA, and everyone played these amps. I always hated them with a passion. It wasn’t until almost 10 years later that a buddy had a killer recording time and showed me how to eq a dual rec and tighten up the tubby ass with a boost. 70% understanding the eq + 30% choice of boost= your dual rec not sucking

    • @zerosoma33
      @zerosoma33 Год назад +1

      I hear you OP. They’re not impossible to dial in, but it feels like walking against a wind storm. It’s a prissy thing, and the amp doesn’t really work WITH the player. That goes for ALL Mesas. That being said as a teenager of the early 00’s the Rec tone is locked in my head so not much else will do for that genre. Though I have mainly used a JMP-1 and Mesa 50/50 together for like a decade.
      Also to the other guy : I’ll try a boost for once, lol

    Had the same issue when i bought my first Mesa back in 2008. Purhcased a Dual Rec Roadster 2x12 combo for 2400 brand new.At the time it was hailed as the jack of all tones amps.Plugging in i found a very good ch.1, ch.2 on brit mode sounded awful, and ch.3+4 were way to woofy and dark. I was severely disappointed. Over the next few months i was able to coax some better sounds out of it yet was still feeling like i messed up. What brought the amp to life was adding a MXR10 Band EQ in the loop and a boost out front. That was the sound i was looking for. Tight, aggressive, just huge sounding. Switched a few boosts over the years and currently using a Precision Drive by Horizon Devices and very happy with it. Would love to get my hands on that Deadweald Duality though,,sounds menacing !

    My friend Mike Hasty (Walls of Jericho) has a rev g racktifier that sounds and feels better than the other recs. He swears by using all Mesa tubes and running Mesa EL-34’s to tame the low end. He runs the presence all the way down and using more treble. He said when he visited the Mesa factory in California he asked why there was such a difference between the racktifier and they told him because of the more compact design they used shorter wiring that impacts the tone and quicker response. But yeah Mike swears by only using all Mesa tubes.

    Great video! I have had and still have quite a few amps but have never been willing to lay out the dough for a Mesa. Always wanted one and it's not like a can't
    afford one, it's just one of those things where I see $1200 and $1500 and I just can't do it. LOL. I play in a band and we play out a lot but we aren't ever going
    to play in an auditorium or open for Metallica. My two workhorses are my JCM 900 and my EVH Iconic. Both of which cost about as much as a used Mesa.
    That is what is funny, I've laid out the cash before for amps, something about Mesa that makes me back off. I guess if I found one for 6 or 7 hundred I would
    probably do it. Your rig sounds amazing bro.

    I purchased a 3 channels Dual Rectifier (2009) few months ago, and when I plugged it first time, I was disappointed too. Too much muddy low frequencies, with any EQ settings, modern mode impossible to dial with gain more than 2h00, vintage mode on orange and red channels was dull, cleans sounded thin etc. After few days, I found the best way to deal with it : remove all the Mesa crap tubes. I have a very good tubes tester, and all the tubes (5x12AX7 & 6L6GC STR440 Mesa) were out of specs with low current & transconductance values and a mediocre power tubes pairing, despite the fact they were changed few times before the sale ! So I swapped it with a quad of excellent Sovtek 6L6WXT+ and few 12AX7/ECC83 tubes with top notch specs (JJ and some NOS RTC, Dario Miniwatt & Valvo). My dual rectifier has suddenly become a real beast, with a lot more volume, body and less fuzz in the highs, 100% usable gain and EQ, no more muddy lows, harmonious cleans etc. A very new amp in fact ! It's really a pity to have this kind of amplifier with such poor tubes. Now it's a pure pleasure to play it, whereas initially I was like Kyle, on the verge of selling it...

    I've always found it kinda funny how as we grow as players our opinion of gear changes drastically. I've always thought most of the disagreements on gear stem from the different places guitarists are at musically. It's all about what you ask your gear to do....what does it have to have...how it affects your playing....knowledge of support gear in the case of this amp...it all just adds up.

    Treble on zero needs to be compensated with the presence knob which only works that well on the orange channel (also setting mids high) because the red channel in modern has no NFB. Best settings (clock face) for me on the Orange (Vintage) are bass just below noon, mids 2, treble 3 and presence around 3, adjusting to just before it goes overboard. Then adjust gain to how much saturation you want. An EQ in the loop with a little bump around 1-2K will get you all the mix friendly mids you’ll ever need.

The Schumacher transformers, England V30s, open back cab, just in general it has this different rectifier oomph that none of my other rectifiers have. With all those amps and cabs you have, you should definitely start making Quad Cortex, ToneX and Neural Amp Modeler packs to sell! Kemper packs could also be a thing, but seems like many have sold their Kempers in favour of ToneX or Neural Amp Modeler (since both are free and higher quality than Kemper). Cab IRs could also be profitable, but you would also need a pretty good assortment of mics for that. The regular ones such as 2xSM57 (for Fredman technique), SM7B, MD421, C414 (or Austrian Audio OC18). For ribbons the R121 should be enough, but the Beyerdynamic M160 and SE Electronics VR1/VR2 are also a popular for recording guitar amps and IRs with. Selling digital stuff like amp captures and IRs is pure profit! This way you can still earn money on gear that you've sold long ago.

    I thought it would be a Roadster. That was my first Rectifier, and I did not like it at all. I found it on a local listing for $1300 with the slant cab, and I offered him $800 for the head (should have just got the cab, too). That one had =C= EL34s, and it sounded really tame and muddy. Shortly after, I found a 3ch Triple with some nice extras for $1k, and I still have that amp because of its much more aggressive character. I also found that I do not like EL34s in Rectifiers. I tried some E34Ls in my Triple and almost sold it until I put the stock Mesa 6L6s back in. I would like to revisit the Roadster for that reason. I could have tried the 6L6s in my Triple in the Roadster, but didn't think of it at the time since I was set on selling the Roadster. I would also love to try a 2ch Rectifier some day. Great video! 8)

    I'm not sure what's going on, but I am slowly becoming a fan of MESA amps now, I fucking used to HATE them as well, but they're slowly becoming one of my favs. Maybe it has to do with the hearing loss over the years, we're getting old.

    But love the Marshall jvm410h
    I’ll keep both and work on dialing in those tones that have made Mesa tones famous
    I do think they are tricky to dial in regardless of which cab I use

      turn the bass knob to zero and then dial in the bass using the sliders! Also, higher treble knob helps with attack and tightness

    I had that amp for a long time (Almost twenty years) I loved it. It was too heavy for touring. But I loved the strange sound of it, it was unique but always clear and full bodied. I kinda miss it 🤘

    I was I think 28 or so and I saw a mesa single rectifier in guitar center. This was 20 years ago or so. I plugged in and immediately got a semi, but I’ve always been a mid scooped thrash metal dude especially then.

    My guess is it's a Rev G dual channel. That was the recto that disappointed me the most and left me feeling the same way until I made the same discoveries you did, kinda at the same time.

    I remember being 16 in 2006 and trying a Dual Rec at guitar center for the first time and being like LOL WTF this thing sounds flabby as hell. Had no idea how to dial one in.
    Then again my favorite amp by far has always been a VHT/Fryette Pittbull 50CL, which is quite different from a Recto tone.

    I felt the same with my bedrock at the start. After repaired and slightly modified, After growing up and understanding how it works. It's wonderful for me. But for mesa, I don't think I would buy it because maintenance is nightmare. And because I prefer mark range in mesa than rectifier range. My favorite sound in mesa is JP signature. And I love post eq Idea. And I don't understand why with rectification tubes or diods, you don't prefer to control amp eq more precisely.

    Gah! Wish you bought mine, though I’m asking $2200 for mine. But she’s pretty minty. Only selling it cuz I want something with a built in IR loader and reactive load for silent stage. So looking at bagging a badlander, Engl ironball or revv g20.

    Boogie Tubes are just rebranded JJ’s anyway… Boogie matches power tubes in pairs to help overcome bias issues since their amps are fixed Bias. So it helps simplify retubing when you buy from them basically.
    Recto sounds great. All the things you describe about them is all the reasons why people both love them and hate them. The amp probably sounds pretty close to the same as it did, but your ears / touch probably changed over the years.

    I'm curious, do you intentionally leave in the parts where you restart what your going to say? You don't seem like the type of creator that would miss that stuff in the edit so im assuming its intentional because its not the first time I've noticed it. Adds a little more of a human element to the videos like "hey I still fuck up too, its not always perfect" . I dig it 🤘
