Holy shit! I've played guitar for 3 years and haven't progressed in a long time. After an hour of practising this I already sense improvement! This was vastly motivating!
Awesome. Great to hear stuff like that, can be pretty hard to work out what can help get you a kick start for some more progression. Glad this helped facilitate that!
Thanks, that means a lot! I try to show where things can go & give suggestions on where to take them. But it's really all about highlighting the building blocks, so you can do what you want with them :)
@@JbfMusicGuitar Putting clear tabs on screen is a must, also towards the top of the screen, so if you pause the video on a smart TV you can still see the tabs. Too many teachers are more concerned with getting their faces on screen than tabs! Keep up the great content. The short riff videos are excellent.
@@neilrobinson7615 Yeah the pausing thing is really annoying, I tend to use a PC and on full screen the title often obscures the top of the video- good to hear my system works well for you though! I think statistically you tend to get longer view duration (and a better pop in the algorithm) if you have more face to face communication (albeit digitally!), but those types of lessons tend to not have much substance and seem to be more about foster motivation or just something to watch while you eat lunch or whatever. Which are totally valid and can be great way of getting you in the mood to play, but there are plenty of folk doing that already! Thanks, yeah I noticed a lot of guitar riff lesson were getting quite long (again this is probably an algorithm-related thing), but sometimes you just need a 30 second clip with tab to nail it; also means that it doesn't matter where you're from, if you can read tab you can learn the riff :)
@@JbfMusicGuitar Play it at the correct speed, then at 50% and show the tabs. That's what I like. If there is some tricky fingering maybe touch on that. Much appreciated.

This video is absolutely amazing, i cant believe i didnt find you sooner. No bs, no gimmicks, just real information to help people learn how to shred. I actually am trying to learn a solo that has a shred run that is exactly the same shape as Pattern 1, Lick 1. But two problems I am having the most trouble with is 1) my fretting hand not being able to keep up speed , so it syncs out with my picking and 2) transitioning to the next string, especially when t is descending direction towards the Low E . Any tips you can give me for these 2 issues?
Awesome, glad to hear that Adam! I try to made these as if I was watching them and wanting to get information; sometime I like detail, other times I just want timestamps and to get right to the point! The algorithm seems to favour stuff that keeps people watching, rather than giving them the info they want (I'm sure you've sat through your fair share of 30 minute video, that never really get to the point!), so my stuff doesn't seem to get pushed quite as much, glad you found it! Sure: 1. Trying playing it legato (hammering on) to build fretting hand speed. Keep it slow and both hands as relaxed as possible when picking the run- this is a great warm up for doing that: ruclips.net/video/JrBiNJ-T-xo/видео.html Play the run 'as fast as possible, but as slow as necessary', speed will come when your hands get sync'd, so don't get too concerned about it! 2. This is likely a pickslanting issue (a quick 101 on that here: ruclips.net/video/HRyDw-tSAOk/видео.html) In a nutshell: the subtle rotation of your forearm combined with with type of stroke you start the lick on (down or up) makes it easier, or harder to cross strings. Figure out which type of stroke you're starting the run with and adjust your picking angle as needed. Let me know how you get on with this stuff ^ and if it makes any sense 🤘
This is cool stuff. Tom Hess and some of these other teachers say to use directional picking, not strict alternate picking or strict economy picking.. I cannot tell the difference in directional and economy picking.. Can you post up some tabs exercises to help with directional picking, and how to play it accurately? Thanks.
I'm honestly not sure what directional picking is! It might be picking with one type of slant/escape strokes and using strategic legato like Yngwie? Will need to watch some videos on it to figure out what it is
Wow. Thanks for this. Probably the best lesson on this topic. I’m not a shredder, but it sure is a nice thing to pull out of my toolbox when needed. Subscribed!
That's it! Doesn't matter on the genre, you can usually find a use for most tricks and techniques, even if it's just to do something a bit flashy! Great video! I'm trying to incorporate a metronome more into my practice routine - what tempo would you suggest to play them at to get them up to speed - it sounds great when you play them at full speed and it would be nice to have something to aim at - many thanks!
Thanks, glad you found it useful. Sure, I'll give you the best advice I've ever had regarding that: 'As fast as possible, but as slow as necessary' So, where it's still clean and the notes are clear, but it's still at higher tempo. Try going up in groups of 20; 80, 100, 120. Then tweak as needed and find a sweet spot in there. Then, wild and crazy option crank it up to 140, 160 or even 180- it will probably be a total mess, but! When you slow it back down to your golden tempo, you'll likely find it easier. ^let me know if that makes sense and if any of it helps?

I always use my 4th finger for 3nps patterns.....do you think this is holding me back and I shoukd devote some time to using fingers 1 2 3 for 3nps patterns?
Hmmm, tough question! If your 4th finger is comfortable, then it shouldn't have much of an effect. Having said that, why not try using your 3rd finger a bit more for a few weeks and see if you prefer that? The only other thing I'd say here is that I can keep my wrist a bit straighter when using my 3rd fingers, instead of my 4th. I mean, everyone is different, so it's hard to know what works best. The only real way to to try stuff out and see what works the best :)
