The Giant isn't simulating a fake really tall piano. It's sampled from an actual really tall piano. It's sampled from the Klavins Piano Model 370i, a two story tall upright piano. The Una Corda is also a real instrument from the same company, which has one string per note.

OK, sir, I have to tell you. This is by far the best "demo some VST" video I've ever seen, especially of piano VSTs. Everyone rapes pianos with contemporary harmonies, blending everything in one big mess. I don't even like classical music that much, but you delivered exactly what a musician needs to hear when deciding on a new VST. All the nuances, all the dynamics, all the individual characters. Kudos. Thank you very much.

I love me a good clear and crisp sounding grand piano. You can always take away from the sound and make it darker, but it's much tricker to put it back in and make it brighter. Noire and Gandeur are definitely my favorites here

The Maverick, Noire, or Grandeur with Raum sound better, in my opinion. That setup instead with a skilled player. Maybe some accompanying pads in the background from Massive X or FM8 would be killer, or a soundscape from Ashlight or Straylight with the pianist playing over it. 😎👍

  • @PantaFlux
    @PantaFlux 5 лет назад +130

Actually The Giant is not a simulated or emulated piano but a real piano. It’s the Model 370i (3.70 meters in height) by David Klavins who also built the Una Corda (one string per note) and just recently the Model 470i (4.70 meters in height).
And what happened to ALL the other pianos by Native Instruments? I could spot at least another 7:
    • Berlin Grand (which was dismissed when the Gentleman/Grandeur/Maverick arrived but just recently showed up in the downloads again)
    • Kontakt Factory Library:
    - Band/Acoustic Pianos/Grand Piano
    - Band/Acoustic Pianos/Ragtime Piano
    - Band/Acoustic Pianos/Upright Piano
    - Orchestral/6 - Keyboard Instruments/August Foerster Grand
    - Orchestral/6 - Keyboard Instruments/Concert Grand

Props to your chops. I've mostly watched your modular stuf until now. It's clear to me how equalizing synth gear is -- one can get great musical results with minimal virtuosity or even music theory training. Watching you tickle the ivories just now shows me that you're coming from a place of many hours of a traditional music practice (maybe everyone already knew that about you? Am I late to the party?). That's definitely something special in my eyes. I'm inspired. Anyhoo... I thoroughly enjoyed watching and hearing you today. Thanks.

The Una Corda is really interesting, especially without the added "textures." The Noire probably my favorite of the grand piano styles. More presence and accuracy than any of the others, but no harsh high end.

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 Год назад +1

I heard that, too. The Grandeur and The Maverick have "Deep" presets that sound more impressive like the Noire. The default presets that load when you load each library will not show off each libraries' best, in my opinion.

"Alicia's Keys" reminded me of an extremely good Steinway B. In a studio with acoustically dead walls, so no wall reflections that muddy it. (Each instrument has its own character and depending on preference you may like the one in the showroom, think "meh", or dislike it.)

Your authentic French and Italian pronunciation of the pianos' names is hilarious (0:10, 0:13)! I love your spontaneous improvisational ideas. If you ask me, The Grandeur is the most intimately beautiful and flexible of them all. That is why I chose that one for "My Fondest Memory" on my channel. Thank you for sharing your exceptional skills with us!

Yes, the grandeur is definitely the best sound out of the first three. Big rich bass and crisp highs. I know he says the Maverick has a darker more mellow tone, but if you want that you can just turn down the tone color of the grandeur halfway and you get the same result, but with the same full sound.

  • @VisceralSerenity

Alicia's Keys and The Giant go really well together. Pair the lower keys of The Giant with the higher keys of Alicia's Keys, split 50/50 on one keyboard. Bask in the fullness.

  • @kidnath

    my opinion
    The Gentlemen: Really Classic
The Grandeur: Like a Piano Concert
The Maverick: idk feels like common piano
Alicia's Keys: Really great for Pop and RnB music but not really versatile
The Giant: can fit any genre and really versatile
Una Corda: great for cinematic and film score
Noire: same with una corda but have more option
so the winner is The Giant :D

    1:03 Color increase. Brighter.
    2:13 Verdict of The Gentleman.
2:37 Grandeur is a clean concert grand.
5:00 Maverick. Darker grand, more intimate.
7:11 Warmer, darker. Something between the previous two pianos.
9:05 Alicia's Keys. Added a lot of auditorium reverb
12:03 Verdict of Alicia's Keys. Combo of warm, bright and clean. Velvety feel.
13:28 Una Corda and The Giant are more esoteric and weird.
13:39 The Giant is a fake very tall piano.
14:19 The Giant, Grand Pop preset.
    14:53 All That Jazz preset.
    15:10 Concert Hall preset.
    15:40 Lots of noise preset.
    16:05 Emotional preset.
16:36 Verdict on The Giant. Can get more bass on it than usual. Has more character of a kind.
17:18 Una Corda has load of customisation possibilities. More glassy than other pianos.
    18:43 Una Corda - Felt.
19:07 Not a typical piano but good for a different atmosphere. Expressive and immersive.
20:47 See his other video on Noire. Comes with flavours Pure and Felt.
    21:39 Controls.
    22:36
    22:50 Felt variation.
    23:52

Side note here... Nils Frahm actually played a big part in the making of these pianos (especially with Una Corda which it's mostly his idea) along with David Klavins (the luthier/inventor)

I was really glad to discover this video. I don't have the skills to test these pianos myself. From your tests it seems that Maverick is very tailored to pizzicato type playing. In contrast Alicia's Keys seems to lend itself to more flowing pieces. I like the full body of Noire. Grandeur seems like a generic grand piano. Gentleman has a very friendly tone, and probably would be good for demos, songwriting and pop playing. Una corda and The Giant are niche players that have their place. I would be interested in your take on the pianos and e-pianos in IK Multimedia's Sampletank 4.

i think it's the midi controller he is using, i would seem the key velocity curve is somehow very low and that makes everything sound really soft

Thank you for you video. I think i'm gonna take this keyboard instead of roland fp30 or kawai es-110. The quality of vst is very good. We can do nice things. Thank you for helping me

Hey, this might be a bit odd to ask on a 3 year old video, but do you have any tips on how you make the pianos louder in Native Kontrol? I basically got almost all the instruments from Native, but the pianos (that you showcased) are all much quieter than the rest of the available instruments (like strings, synths, guitars etc.). I use the Komplete Kontrol Mk II.

Really enjoyed your video... looking to buy my first piano and also saw your Noire review... It certainly speaks to me as the best one, and as someone who is a 2 finger keyboardist (I play drums, guitar, bass and sing) the particle engine sounds like it was made for my limited talents. Thanks for your efforts... Your playing is beautiful and you are making a difference in my life at least. cheers -peter in Montreal.

I would like to know more about the efects. The "let off" Key, dammper resonance and the strings resonance too. The half pedal... Someone can Tell me If all of these efects are
    considered in the software?

j' ai apprécié aussi. il n y avait pas que les variations, mais 2 des inventions et un du clavier bien tempéré et 1er morceau de la 2eme partita. (si j' ai bien compté)
