Rich Highs = Stradivari
Powerful Mids/Lows = Guarneri
It's all about preference.
Both sound absolutely amazing. The Guarneri had a deeper, more broad and full, sound that causes me to perceive more warmth, feeling, and emotion.
Simply, the Guarneri is darker and amplified, which I'm surprised of considering that they are usually small models. The Stradivarius is lighter and more cheerful.
Perfect description. I completely agree.
Guarneris are bigger than strads
After listening twice to the recordings, I've noticed that the Stradivarius violin has a soprano pitch as compared to the Guarneri which has a low alto to tenor pitch. The Stradivarius was also more sensitive to the touch when she pressed her fingers. The Guarneri was a lot more slower and mellow to respond when the fingers, pressed the strings. I also noted one more thing which is what I believe the Stradivarius gets it's more pricey value, and that is .... TA RA: That while, I was listening to the performance, the music sounded more spontaneous and more richer. Meaning the music sounded as if the sound was being created, right at that precise moment. The Stradivarius violin makes one want to create music as opposed to the Guarneri; which sounds as if, the music has gotten out dated and long forgotten. For me, the sound of the Stradivarius makes me want to create music for the violin, because it's crispness and freshness of sound inspires me as a composer to compose.
The Del Gesu is probably worth more. I would say the Strad is more elegant, with more harmonics, while the Del Gesu is more piercing and faster. There are 600 Strads and 80-100 Del Gesu's in existence. I would say this IS A marvelous Strad. and an average Del Gesu, probably one of the last he ever made, so he may not have had his full faculties, but one he made two years earlier is the most valued violin on the planet.
Steven Lysen Those are both modern instruments made by the uploader (he is a violin maker) inspired by Stradivari and Del Gesu, not authentic(still good sound tough)
the richness and smoothness and effortless amplified tones of the Guarneri are obviously outweighing the stradivarius the redundant crowd fav. If I thought to say that one had a voice I would say it was the Guarneri....
Both violins sound great while each has its own unique character. The player's choice of one or the other depends on their individual playing style.
I personally would like the Guarnieri for long sustained notes and the Strad for something more up-tempo.
Definitely, Guarneri ... much fuller sound. Congrats!!!
both have an excellent sound. That's what matters. 18th century violinists would have been honored to play these 2 copies.
thank you!
They're both very beautiful but I prefer the more earthy voice of the del Gesu.
the Guarneri immediately gave me chills
Of course, they all sound great; but I could hear a distinct difference between the Strad and the Guarneri. I just have a natural preference for the more mellow sound of the Guarneri, but I also like the sweet sound in the higher notes of the Strad. I pick the Guarneri.
Loved both violin 😍
I agree with the consensus the Strad is higher , tighter, sweeter, brighter..... The DelGesu is wider, lower, darker, broader....Its just a matter of taste, mine is for the DelGesu
Thank you!
The Guarneri just seems a bit more powerful and more projecting for me.
thank you!
Duas pérolas que são de inestimável valor.
Because Guarneri Player is pressing More
While Stradivari is more a bow Movement
@@mr.z6252 don't get y she'd play it differently for comparison purpose
@@daniel3231995 Because that's what a Professional Soloist said
Gotta hand it to the Guarneri. The Strad was a bit brighter with a more focused tone. I can see why people would like it, but the brightness tends to be a bit unpleasant on my ears. The darkness of the Guarneri helped it be a little more balanced and I believe more complex.
0:40 Strad / 2:23 Guarneri Del Gesu
0:45 Strad / 2:28 Guarneri Del Gesu
0:54 Strad / 2:36 Guarneri Del Gesu
1:02 Strad / 2:58 Guarneri Del Gesu
Sry I did these for myself to be able to jump quickly but if you try it yourself, you can really hear the difference. Just listen to a few seconds and just click on the timestamp of the other violin for direct comparison.
Guarneri Del Gesu are hands down my absolute favorite violins, those are truly masterful.. imo even better than Strads but dont come for me :D
Btw, the first violinmaker Guarneri was Del Gesu's grandfather who had learned from the master Amati himself. He passed those skills down to his son who then passed them on to Guarneri Del Gesu who made this violin in the video =) So kinda important to know which of the Guarneri family actually made it
One day if Im rich I'll get one haha just believe
it takes time to assess these instruments which one is better or is it really nice instrument by itself! a lot of factors....strings! (a bunch of brands that u can mix up), bow, (some violins might sound better with its right bow), acoustic place, soundpost adjustment......my violin before i thought its really bad but when i gave it a chance to open up and experimented on different strings and adjusted the soundpost ....now its a jewel
That Stradivari has such a sweet, silvery tone.
I hear guarinieri has darker and smoother tone, and stradivari has screaming edge tone. I love both. but I will choose stradivari if I should vote.
The Guarneri has a nicer tone to me, but the high note ending the second phrase on the Strad sounded more controlled and subtle.
Super film ! :)
The Guarneri copy is my preference -the Strad copy is wonderful but I really liked the body of the Guarneri (despite that your player didn't do as well on that one).
Pending finish and a real mic to compare harmonics and resonance, I'd get the Guarneri.
If I got the Strad I'd switch the Dominants for a full set of Evah Gold to give it more projection (and a bit more sweetness?). I'd definitely try the Titanium Solo on the Guarneri (at least the D and the A), see how that projected the body and added some responsiveness (or not). It's got suchh body and it just needs to project it more, and that would be done via the string choice.
Have you tried them with just a basic string (Tonica) to see how they compare? I'd also recommend playing them in a concert hall if you're using that cam to do it- the frequencies will carry and resonate in the hall in a way that little cam mic might be able to pick up better about 25-35' from the stage.
Nice work!
Strad or Del Gesu..Heifetz or Oistrakh.. Mozart or Haydn.. Thai food or Chinese food: please don’t compare not comparable issues. They all have their beauty (values) which ought to be enjoyed..but not to be compared.
+Raoul Tak - I think what he was asking for is which of HIS copies one would like to vote for. Not so much which of the original masters was _better_.
Messi or Cristiano
Nothing wrong with getting the public opinion. No one is making such a huge deal about it, which is nice.
I realized this comment is three years old
The Stradiuarius violin is like aged wine. Guarneri's violin is pure vodka. Not a society of anonymous alcoholics :)
Both gorgeous, but the richness of sound and tonal "isolation" (for lack of a better term) in the Strad is very distinct.
Thank you for shared opinion :)
I've always preferred Guarneri models and violins because of the darker tone, but I do agree that between these two particular violins the Strad does seem to sound clearer and more pure. That could also be the player. Not that she is bad or anything, but of course everyone has their own unique way of playing, and the Strad could just sound better because of the way she plays. In general I've always felt that I sound better playing a Guarneri, but I can see now that I could be led to change my mind.
Stradivari, definately !!!
Thank you for the shared opinion !!!
Ok so it's been a few years since I watched this video and it seems as though my taste in sound has changed. In short, I could listen to the Guarneri all day!
Love this kind of video ! Guarneri is very powerful and deep, but between those two I do prefer the Strad, the soft brightness coming out of it just makes the music so emotional (can't explain better !), it kind of communicates lot of subtle emotions. Guarneri here is more about darkness, power and rich tones and the strad more about pure brightness, buttery softness and subtility.
The Strad rings and projects lovely but the Guarneri has a deeper louder tone. Both win in my opinion.
i think you should to play short musical phrases, one violin and then the other violin to apreciate diferences, cause our ears remember last sound played better than first one
they were both dark and rich but if i had to choose I think the guarneri had a capability of more tonal colors.
I like the bottom half of the Guarneri and the top half of the Strad!
I've had the pleasure of playing both a golden era Strad and late era Guarnieri in the same afternoon. The Strad wins my vote IMHO. There is a magic to Strads that I've never experienced before.
Agapitus Lye, What strings did you use?
Thank God for the little ice age we had, to give us the most beautiful sound ever from a violin or pretty much any instrument ever.
What are the two songs she is playimg if someone could help ne out that would be great
They are sounding quite similar in my ears. The Stradivari was a bit brighter, but that was minimal. Both exquisite violins for sure.
strad is AWESOME‼️
Stradivarius produces more clean and direct when playing.. while Guarneri produces more wave sound when playing.. I prefer the sound from Guarneri.
Thank you for shared opinion :)
The first violence had a soul.
I prefer to play the Guarneri.
Hi, dear. sounds wonderful.
what strings are you using on stradivari?
I like it a lot
Thank you !
The strings are Evah Pirazzi :)
+Mityo Dimitrov violin maker hey what's the name of the piece she's playing in this video?
+jacob garcia The first piece is the soloist's opening from Max Bruch's Violin Concerto in G minor Op. 26, and the second song is from the first movement, Adagio, of Bach's Sonata for solo violin in G minor BWV 1001.
Guarneri on this for me.
In this video I prefer the Strad., it's sound is what I associate with a beautiful violin.
Guarnieri, deep rich tones
Thank you for making this comparison possible...
I’m of the belief both Violins were made by you OR originals, refitted by you. Please clarify!
Players will have a subjective and possibly biased opinion. To me their descriptive opinions show possible differences in design and assembly. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but frequency will transfer best through hard more solid vrs softer spongy type material. This reflects recent testing showing Strad wood was treated with preservatives thus proving a harder more solid material. Second the Base Bar added to the Top Plate would be expected to effect high or low frequencies. Adding Plate thickness and where the Plate thickness is, reflects those highs and lows.
👉Really a more informative comparison should include a dimensional Map of both Top and bottom Plates for both versions. Some Builders wrap with their knuckles for proper pretuning. Final testing can be done by laying a Plate, conveys side up, adding black dust to show patterns when certain frequencies are played via a speaker from under the Plate. This should show how well overall the Plate was carved. Offering this type of test done on both versions would offer more insight! I’ve noticed when viewing videos of Originals being repaired that Plates insides are very well shaped. This shows extensive care with shaping. Hence, final Plate thicknesses do matter!
I’ve noticed the glues used are mostly Hyde Glue. This was available in the 1700’s and offers a glass like bond that’s easily broken for repairing. Seems to be best choice. Comments requested...
Lastly, it’s important to look at what was available with technology back in the 1700’s. Micrometer type calipers weren’t available as well as other types of more modern materials. Bridges appear best when made from more harder solid wood. In all cases, has anyone tried using Titanium? Weight comparisons if necessary might benefit. Certainly wear wouldn’t be a problem and frequency transmission would be greatly improved.
Thank you about opinion! Yes a both violins are hand-made personal by me :) For these violins my inspiration are these great Italian masters like Stradivari and Guarneri!
I listened to the originals live, I really liked them because they have a contrasting and very specific sound. I have been making these 2 models and others for more than 20 years! Of course, there are differences not only in the sound but also in their construction and materials as well! In my studio, this is the result!
I hope you are liked a both!
Welcome to my workshop to see, hear and test more by my instruments :)

@@MityoDimitrovviolinmaker Thank you for replying and clarifying my questions. Yes, I enjoyed the sound of both! My interest was more focused on reasons why the sounds might be different. Thoughts are many reasons seem to contribute to making the sound different. Construction differences, choice of materials, material preparation (ex. soaking in a preservative) and how the Instrument is assembled and played to me, are the reasons. A preservative has been shown from testing to exist in the Strads, yet it doesn’t appear anyone during modern times are doing this. The Preservative may be expected to somewhat fill the wood pores to make the wood more solid thus transferring frequencies better.
The successful Violin design appears to come from what dedicated Craftsmen did during the 1700’s. Artists over the centuries have valued those made with the right mix of materials and design to get us where we are today. I’m of the belief that people tried to copy the old design throughout the years but haven’t found information describing attempts to change anything. The Bridge as an example might benefit from changing to a different material. It has an important role with supporting the strings and transferring vibration into the Top Plate. Wear has been mentioned since there is a lot of pressure from the strings at that point. Notice that Bridges are located in the center of the side cutouts! Again this may be because of producing the best vibrations.
Please accept that string material is produced on Wiredraw Systems. Wire comes in at a larger diameter and is pulled or drawn through special Carbide dies. The design uses a multi reduction or die system and each reduction or die hardens the wire a little more. When a wire breaks it usually happens from the material being work hardened. When this happens the material becomes so hard at a point it cracks and breaks. The hardness may even be so hard it could cut glass! Ex: take a wire hanger and sharply bend it back and forth. It gets hot and eventually cracks and breaks. Same action may happen with string instruments.
What appears important is transferring the frequencies to the Top Plate and of course into the other parts of the Violin Box through the Soundpost. This would make positioning the soundpost in the best spot. I’m sure many have tried different positions with varied results. Can’t forget about the Base Rib and how it’s shaped. My initial view of how sound is produced in a Violin seems to deal with the Box. Then second both Plates with their designs, shapes and ability to respond to frequencies coming in from the Bridge. Don’t want to ignore the sounds coming from the strings as they certainly are important. This brings up an important question. If only the strings without the box, what is the sound like? Testing to show the importance of the Box might need to be proven to show measurably the value of the Box. Does the Box amplify the sound too?
Please excuse my never ending questions. I’m a very curious person and am mystified by all the mysterious attraction from Artists towards the earlier few Craftsmen. Some artists even commit serious crimes to possess one. Their behavior might be thought of being extremely fanatical! The earliest Craftsmen seem to successfully combine a start of the best mix of materials, preparation, design and assembly that’s admired to this day.
I'll take one of each.
Thanks for this comparison.
Both have incredible tone quality but I felt Guarneri projected its tone a tad bit better on all strings..
Stradivarius 0:40
Guarneri 2:23
Guarnieri for certain deeper tone songs. And Strad... for Winter by Vivaldi
Thank you for the shared opinion !!!
hello, one information.
" Antonius.& Hieronym. Fr Amati
Cremonen. Andreae fil. F.16"
What violin if?
For sure they are great instruments, I like them both. I won't make a comment because the audio part of it compressed and distorted, just like all others video posted on You Tube.
not forget that these instruments on big stages change, I believe that the larger, more Guarnieri will be notable for its depth. but stradivario with its large refining, depending if it is played in a small studio environment or treated, can do better than the Guarneri .... we can not forget that each manufacturer is stradivari or one of guraneri, made only ones instruments, and eVERY one sounds different from his brothers, so they each have their own name. Guarnieri and the stradivari possessed the same master, so in the end everything is in family, the Italian family
what are the songs that she plays?
The Guarnerius sounds in a very warm rich tone and the Strad sounds Cold. I preferred the Guarnerius.
1:02 2:58
I’ll take both 😂😂😂
Guarneri!!!!
The Stradivarius. The Guarneri has smooth tones, but in my opinion, the Stradivarius is better because it is much louder and you only have to move the bow along the strings without needing to worry about pushing down slightly on the bow as it moves. As well as the Stradivarius being in almost perfect condition and has such a beautiful sound for every note that is played. Not to mention that it is over 300 years old and made by the most famous violin maker ever born.
Ummm. It's a copy. And the player is less experienced and the rosin on the bow is different between the instruments, so her playing wasn't as strong on the Guarneri is all- listen to the tone more.
Oh, and 9/10 people don't like the sound of a Strad (the real ones) in blind studies (vs. newer better made violins).
Jason Potter knowledge has increased in all realms.
Its application based. Both sound fantastic. But I like mine best. Ill post my new violin composition soon hopefully with a decent microphone.
I've watched your video!!!!! Try your best!!!!
gosh! why some people here are making these instruments of Mr.Dimitrov sort of a statement that the other wins or the one!!! just by hearing in just one room. Each instrument is different and even the great violinists would always have different opinions. Even if you have the greatest instruments and you never exactly know what it can't and can do for you ...nothing will happen to you!
I prefer the Guarneri
Thank you for vote!
Guarnieri ....es un violín esplendido...único. .....!!!!!!!!el sonido es mas amortiguado....
Bruch violin concerto No. 1 in G minor
Stradivari=rich, full, tone: Guarneri=sweet, clear tone. matter of preference.
The Del Gesu was too flat sounding. In this one, I definitely preferred the Stradivari. The Stradivari was warmer, fuller, and more beautiful sounding than the Del Gesu.
Hm do you sell it.?
More info on email: dimitrov@beautiful-violin.com
Strait off the bat I heard that the stradd has a higher pitch and the notes are more crisp as they draw you into the sound
Guarnieri !
Thank you for vote !
i love a staduvarus
Timestamp:
Strad beginning: 0:40
Strad 2: 0:54
Strad Bach: 1:03
Guarneri beginning: 2:22
Guarneri 2: 2:37
Guarneri Bach: 2:58
The Guarneri has more echo just like a pedal being pressed on a piano while playing
Guarnieri for me
I'm a Guarneri girl.
I prefer Guarnieri del Gesù! !!!
Damn they do sound awfully similar though. Really splitting hairs. I'm a musician and mixer.
To compare:
0:40 and 2:22 starts low
0:59 and 2:41 the same high measure
The Guarneri has a slightly darker tone. Other than that, they are the same. Those unclear notes were just mistakes.
sera mesmo???
no wonder why Stradivari is soo rare now a days, its pure magic to ears
Guaneri is good also but it dosent have that magic touch that Strad has
the only thing i can feel is a diference between the high frequencies, the stradivari has a wonderful sound, guarnieri too, but, guarniere has a few more high sound but this is not good, it sounds like a scratch...
The Guarneri is the male and the stradivarius is the female, that's how i can put it simply
The Guarneri has more body to the sound, In my humble opinion.
I prefer Guarneri. Incredible sound.
Yes l also prefer guarneri
Agree!
Guarnieri!
Both instruments sound amazing
The sound of Strad and Guarneri are both enchanting, is like walking in the woods and meeting the witch
Guarnieri was AMAZING. It was very smooth sounding, and I believe is more versatile when it comes to how easily you can play a larger range of music.
The Guarneri seems to have a fuller more soothing sound on each note.
The Strad seems more thin and shrill on each note.
To my amateur naive ear, I prefer the Guarneri.
Thanks for the lovely sounds.
It sounded like the Guarnieri was more damped - no overtones or aftertones. At the higher end, these aftertones made the Strad sound richer, but at the lower end, the damping made the Gaurn richer.
