Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Cells separated by an X must contain digits summing to 10. Cells separated by a white dot must contain consecutive digits. Cells separated by a black dot must contain digits with a 1:2 ratio. Not all dots or Xs are given.

▶ABOUT US◀
Hi! We're Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, two of the UK's most enthusiastic puzzle solvers. We have both represented the UK at the World Sudoku Championships and the World Puzzle Championships.
Thank you for watching!
Simon and Mark
I'm currently learning not to do more than one thing simultaneously, because of my ADHD I am so used to do two or more things at once and your videos really help me focus on one thing at a time. Not only because I can think about the puzzle with you, but also because of your positive and calm attitude.
I look forward Simon's positive calm attitude as well - particularly when my day has been anything but that!
Funny, I do the same thing. This is one of the few channels I actually watch the whole video, not just listen while doing something else.
My ADHD makes it very hard to work on long term projects, such as this sudoku app, but it does help me sometimes to stream my work to an "audience" to force me to stay on track and not multitask so much!
Fidgeting/stimming is pretty much the only exception from the “no multitasking” rule.
As a fellow human with ADHD, I have a very similar experience. I second this expression of gratitude.
I'm loving this channel, and while I find the logic easy enough to follow, I often find I lack the experience to know where to look next, and it can be overwhelming. That is why I love, love, love the way Simon presents these videos. So often he'll say something along the lines of "have a look at box five", or "I think the 2s might be interesting". This lets me pause the video and see whether I can spot the next step having been pointed in the general direction. Even the title of the video in this case gives an important clue...I would never have thought to look at parity without it. Thank you so much, keep up the good work.
Funny thing for me is that when I try most of these, that Simon solves, myself I don't have a clue what to do. Then I watch what Simon does and get the break and from that I'm almost always one step ahead of Simon. The reason i think is that I don't need to tell anyone how I found what I found. And I think that must take time and focus which leads to why Simon misses things..
Woohoo! Second feature on the channel, feels just as cool as the first time.
Excellent solving by Simon as always (while also slowing down to explain everything brilliantly, and making very nice comments about the puzzle along the way).
Bonus fun fact about this puzzle: If you remove the black dot from box 6 (or just ignore it until you've resolved all of the other clues), you get a VERY interesting deadly pattern at the end.
Thank you for such an excellent puzzle!
The best puzzles are like this one: Simple rules and awsome logic.
Simon: Let's get cracking
(5 seconds later)
Simon: Well I'm wondering if we need to talk about the secret
MI5: So, we're not hiring Simon then
I would love to see a compilation video of mark and Simon saying things like, “oh that’s brilliant” or “this is really clever”
And the collarary, all the"Bobbins!"s... a nice way to close the channel, if they ever do?
When starting the puzzle, one can immediately place a 5 in r1c9, i suppose... because in row 1 the three x-dominos add up to 30 and they cannot contain a 5; and r1c3 is indeed an even number and the 5 cannot go at the black kropki dot in r1c6, so we are left with r1c9 as the only option for the 5.
I was hunting for a comment like this. I saw the same thing and knew that I could not be alone in spotting it
Yes I was quaking in my seat thinking about this, glad someone else noticed
And Simon figured it out at 13:28
@@matt_not_fat those are the best moments
Over the last 8 months or so I have gone from "wow that's amazing how in the world did he figure that out?" to screaming "SIMON THE 6 IN COLUMN 9 GIVES YOU THE 7 BELOW IT!!" 😂😂😂 Thanks to Simon and Mark for all of the wonderful content! You guys have taught me so much since I started watching!
Aint that how we all progressed :D
That's a really good point actually. I don't think these guys, especially Simon, give themselves enough credit for how instrumental they have been in bringing us all to the point where we CAN shout at the screen when they say "I can hear you shouting at me!" (shouting for them). So really it's them shouting for themselves, as they should.
At my next job interview I will happily inform the interviewer that orange and odd start with the same letter!!!😀 Another great solve Simon!!! You give us all so much joy and advise!!!
I just recently stumbled upon this channel and now I watch almost every vid and am going back and watching older ones. Love it!
Solving sudoku clues in order to flee the poltergeist in Simon’s house would be a lovely idea for an escape room.
The poltergeist is Maverick's grandfather who fell foul of the antiknights who say Nori-Nori, and met a tragic end due to the ensuing deadly pattern. In his will he left his entire estate to Maverick on condition that his grandson would dedicate his life to disturbing the daily peaceful gatherings of the devout who seek enlightenment, strive to master the secret and achieve release and resolution of deep and meaningful problems.
It is a sort of conspiracy, you see.
@@amoswittenbergsmusings this moved me to tears
Spoiler warning: it's Mark in a sheet.

Hey Simon, I just wanted to let you know that I've been watching you for about 4 months. I played a bit of beginner Sudoku a couple years ago but haven't touched it for a while. I downloaded a killer Sudoku app this weekend and immediately tried the hard setting. I played 42 rounds and just finished one in just under 10 minutes. I love watching you and see how your mind works (or doesn't at times, haha).
Keep up the great content.

This was an excellen puzzle. Simon said it was a long sequence of deep deduction, but I dont think that is fair. As far as the difficult puzzles featured on this channel I think this was among the more digestible ones and it did not require very difficult logic, just a trained eye for where to look next.
Welp. I got a 5 in the grid and that is pretty much it for me.lol.
@@bradmclean4988 We're still in training ... 😉🤗
The title of the video really gives away how to get started on this one… I think it would have been pretty obvious for me anyway, but we’ll never know for sure. Finished in a time of 23:11.
A truly beautiful puzzle, thank you so much for highlighting this. I needed a few hints from Simon along the way, but managed to "get ahead" in a few places, and had the lovely experience of spotting some nice logic myself. I am definitely a better solver now than I was a year ago, and it's all down to CtC. Thanks guys!
30m 03s. Knowing from the title that parity would be important certainly helped.
@39:01 - That's where I got stuck, and did not figure out the 5,6 pair in box 6. Chapeau to Simon! I wouldn't have this piece of genious logic. Great!
The box 6 logic at the end took me a solid 20 minutes to work out. Simon got it in 20 seconds. Incredible.
1:04:59 for my solve time. I independently came up with the same even/odd coloring to help me figure it out. This wasn't a tough challenge, but a fun and lengthy solve. I started with the path you almost went down, by finding the 5 in row 1, and finding which X sums had to be odd or even in row 1. But your way was a lot faster to find the parity of boxes 1, 4, and 7. However I'm proud of myself for figuring out X sums had to be either both even or both odd faster. It's really fun to learn new things while solving, then get them confirmed by watching the video. Removing the 5 from being in row 2 of box 2 was also really useful, because that would've broken the 456 triple.
I also finished the coloring before I put in the last digit. I know that hurt my time, but I think I'm going to keep doing that.
Very neat puzzle. I loved all the interactions, which were not too difficult to find. Solved it in 28:38, beating Simon by a bit :)
What a joy of a puzzle!
It reminds me of the pirate captain who walked in one day to hear his bird going "Awk! Pieces of nine!" over and over. He pulled out his pistol and shot it dead.
"Arr," he explained. "Parroty error."
::ducks::

Thanks for a great puzzle Simon! I really love watching these videos even though I can’t figure out how to solve them myself. The novice in me is wondering if there is a way to create a Puzzle where the polarity of the puzzle creates a picture when you’re all done. That would be really cool!
Even and odds are so much fun to play with in sudokus. I like this break-in already
35:27 you know the cell he selected is a 9 (r9c4) because of the white kropki dot in box 5. There is either a 9 in r4c6 which places a 1 in r7c6 and a *9 in r9c4(!!)*, or there is a 1 in r4c5 which places a 9 in r1c5 and a 1 in r1c4, and a *9 in r9c4(!!)*.
And that 9 makes a lot of progress in the puzzle.
Well, this was hard work - every single deduction was neat and satisfying but they were difficult to spot. So I'm happy with my snail's pace of 1:17:52. Absolutely lovely puzzle.
Lovely puzzle! First time in a while I've been able to complete it without having to check in with Simon for hints. Quite proud of myself. Of course, I still watched the video - Simon is too much of a treasure to skip :)
my mom can no longer go to sleep without listening to simon
Me too!
Me either
Me too
Your mom and I have that in common
Ditto.
36:52 ... I had a strong start but plodded through the mid-solve, before finally seeing the pieces that let me make it to the end.
Nice puzzle!
I am currently at Minute 16 of the Video and up until now I spotted the next step slightly faster than Simon every. single. time. I feel so on fire tonight, hahaha. What a nice start to the puzzle!
Simon needs a holiday, I think. 2 weeks of doing Anything But Puzzles and he'd be sharper than all of us again, I'm sure.
The title of this vid absolutely gave me the hint I needed to solve this puzzle, for which I'm very grateful. Still took me forever but I managed.
Came across this video from a year and a half ago. Very enjoyable puzzle! If I watched this back when it was first published I am sure I was lost as to how to solve it, but today I did it almost all by myself - just a couple of references to the video. Thanks, Simon, for this great video, and thanks CtC for all of the instruction, inspiration, and entertainment since I started watching sometime close to two years ago - what a great channel!
Very nice puzzle. I was proud of my solve! Got very far, and just got stuck in noticing the two 4-5-6 triples pointing into box 6. That was tough to see. But great puzzle, and very nice solve!
Very proud of my 28:20, first time I've finished significantly ahead of Simon!
I enjoy the content of this channel (particularly the person in this specific video (I'm bad with names)), not for the puzzles themselves but for the logic that is brought to bear for each puzzle. I've learned from watching this channel not to go "is that possible?" and end up second guessing myself and instead ask, "Why is this *not* possible? Is there anything in here that'll tell me why this solution is not possible?" Thank you.
You need to talk to a chocolatier about getting teapot-shaped chocolates available as channel merch.
About colouring: I think you pick exactly the right colors: Orange because starts with O as odds and blue, which is the RGB complement of orange! Thank you Simon for your GREAT videos and your calming voice.
Is it weird that I still enjoy hearing about the secret, 100 videos in?
Even though I know what it is, and I know I know what it is, I still feel like some elite cult member every time it's brought up!
Yes! At last! Took two goes but the first one I've managed since becoming a Patreon.
I was beginning to wonder if I'd found the secret link to the "impossible for normal people" puzzles!
Anyway, next is to try JoviAl's Patreon Pack... Simon says they are "approachable". We'll see!
Symbols missing:
white dots: 7
Black dots: 4
X's: 6
watching this as i try to understand parities better and i found myself at times urging simon on to see certain things before he got to them .. which meant when he did get to them it was like a confidence boost! it means i'm looking at the right things.
I've solved the zeroth law of chromodynamics. It took 3 or 4 tries. And the final try took a couple hours at least. (I'm fairly new to solving variants.) But it was HANDS DOWN one of my favorites ever. I love puzzles where you color almost all of the grid then go back and fill the numbers. FANTASTIC solve
"That is as useful as a chocolate tea pot!"
That cracked me up, haven't laughed like this in a while. I needed that :)
this is the first sudoku ive ever solved fully on my own from cracking the cryptic other than the GAS speedruns mark does. took me just shy of 2 hours but for a beginner at sudoku im really proud i didnt give up!
Did I hear him right??? 4:50
Did he say “that’s a useful as a chocolate teapot”!?! I LOVE that!!! It’s probably a British thing, but I love tea and that’s such a fun saying!
I grew up hearing "as much use as a chocolate fireguard" and only encountered the chocolate teapot version as an adult. Melted chocolate in tea is really nice, albeit from a chocolate teapot you'd likely also scald yourself. So, something nice with a sting in the tail, vs something that is only a waste of time and will make a mess.
...And it's official, I'm overthinking this.
It is probably a British thing because we drink our tea hot ;) It might just work with iced tea.
Why is a Sudoku channel my favorite channel on RUclips
simons voice is so soothing i love listening to him solve puzzles
I'm surprised he hasn't been offered voiceover working advertising weetabix or shreddies.
maybe some day he'll read us a bedtime story - I've listened to some on youtube - Simon's voice is better suited than anyone I've heard!
Jackanorry, or BBC childrens bedtime TV story.
Simon wants one of those pillows. I think the lady should make Simon his own. It is sweet of her to make one but he sounded sad he doesn't have one. :(
😥 I hope she does, although I know how long it would have taken to make it
"There was a five!" 🎵 A very strange enchanted five... 🎶
Watched all videos since Last year and i'm proud that i could find all tricks just before Simon :)
*Simon manages to pencil in a quarter of the grid.*
"Gah! This hasn't done anything!"
Oh this was a *very* fun puzzle to do. Not sure of my time since I left it running overnight accidentally, but suspect I ran ~3h total (including a good chunk of time lost from two logic errors that required me to backtrack significantly once I accidentally caused contradictions).
Difficulty felt like it was on the high side of moderate - some of the deductions were tricky, but reasonably well-telegraphed, so that I usually knew where I should be looking. Only significant delay was figuring out the dots interaction in box 6 near the end, which took a lot of staring before it finally slapped me in the face. My solution path overall matched Simon's very well!
The fact that the puzzle built up all those pairs in the first three columns and rows, and then just *leaves them there* until the very end when they suddenly unwind was a constant source of distraction for me, tho. ^_^
If I had a nickel for every time I neglected a kropki dot, I would be able to afford finally becoming a patron... but I did crack this eventually
i was looking forward to you doing the 456 in box6. I knew you would like it. I was just hoping you wouldnt solve it without the nice bit of logic.
My particular superpower in this puzzle was to treat white kropkis as Xs.
After breaking the puzzle several times by doing that, I just watched the video.
It _ought_ to be a lovely puzzle but I'm clearly not in a suitably alert frame of mind to attempt it this evening!
Another great puzzle! Happy that it go featured.
I gave it a try, but made a mistake in the parity early on. Not quite sure how I managed it, since I was trying to be so careful! Ah, well, maybe next time. Thanks for showing me how it *should* be done, Simon!
I beat the bot!!!
At 25:10, is it possible to say that the 3 in column 6 must be in either the X domino or r2c6?
37:31 for me. A little tricky seeing the interaction of the X's in the leftmost boxes. Really cool logic once you see it though. edit: Simon finds where the 5 can go in box 1 using completely different logic. I found where 5 goes in box 3 right away though.
This was a masterful puzzle. I loved it.
I really enjoyed solving this one. I do wonder if I would have taken longer to find the path in if it wasn't for the hint in the video title.
I got to the exact position before the 456 logic in box 6 and got stuck. That logic there is something to look out for!
Very interesting puzzle and one I was pleased to be able to solve.
These parity puzzles look so fun, but I feel so unpracticed. So when I tackle it, I can't work it out. Would love to see a parity puzzle module in the Steam app!
I would love this as an app!
Very fun puzzle! The logic was not terrifically complex or difficult to see, each step had something to reveal. But because each logical deduction bought only a tiny bit of progress, it felt like the puzzle went on and on. Very enjoyable. For reference, I am not a great solver, Mark's Tangled solve today really did my head in with all the inferences he seemed to pull out of nowhere.
Almost 2 hours to solve for me, it would have been 1.5 hours were it not for the whole half hour that I was stuck for failing to appreciate that the 2s in box 6 could only be on the dot :/. Stubbornly refused to watch the video because I had gotten so far on my own!
44:22, I probably would've guessed that parity was important due to all the white dots, it still took me over 10 minutes to work out the first number.
I didn't even think about parity of odds and evens when solving the puzzle, but found it was still solvable
Where was the link??
My OCD thanks you for colouring all cells in the end!
My like of this video and puzzle was number 42. Surprisingly fitting.
31:35 2 and 8 were already ruled out from the X-domino in r8c6 and r9c6 for quite some time: the options in r2c6 were 2 and 8 so there was no way to use any of them in the X-domino
how do you do the multi coloring?
you activate multi coloring in the settings menu
Fun little puzzle. 37:18
33:43 today. nice parity sudoku.
Just as you use Orange for odd may I suggest light grey for even. I know you don’t like grey (even though I used the British spelling!), but using grey forms a grey square which is used to indicate even in puzzles that clue even digits.
thanks for another video to sleep in, it really helps me :)
The pen tool (activated in the settings) was very useful to mark odds and evens 'O' and 'X' leaving colours free to mark matching dominoes.
The X would confuse me because of the X dominos in the grid
I noticed that the upper right corner has to be a 5 since 5 can't be in am X, can't be with a black dot and can't be in a box that adds to an odd number with all the other squares... And that's as far as I got
The orange and blue kropki dots kind of look like Pokemon balls.
i'm having trouble figuring out how simon put two colours in one square on the web app. does anyone know how to do that?
I had the same problem for a while and figured it out the other day. You have to click on the settings cog and enable multi-colour mode.
@@misterbobEA aah, thank you so much!
i really enjoy the ongoing Maverick saga
Pretty proud of myself spotting that r1,c9 had to be 5 almost right off the bat.
I always use green (even) and red (odd) for parity, but blue/even and orange/odd are close enough, so I can't complain.
Hope the apps will get more than 3 colors. It sucks that the free web app is so much better with (multi)colors.
Absolutely. I've run into a few puzzles on the apps where I really wanted more than 3 colors
Simon: Oh God there's a poltegeist in my house today
Me: Your poltergeist sounds a lot like a cow 🐄
if you click on the pen button, and then click on the edge of a box, you can place an X there to denote that those two boxes sum to 10.
10 seconds in and I knew straight away that the top corner cell had to be a 5.
13:23 There we go, he spotted it.
Orange and odd is cool but square and even, that's madness , just me I suppose,
"I think it's the wind..." and then nobody ever saw or heard from him again.
noooooooo
30:31 I beat you Simon! 😄
Odd is Orange, and Blue is Two (and things divisible by two)
Blue for Mark's new shirt is what this channel had as it's original saying. After getting a lot of comments on red not being an even colour Mark made Odd Orange and he had a new blue shirt on while recording.
@@JaharNarishma Ok... but not exactly a memorable mnemonic...
I have been yelling at the screen for a good portion of the video.
“5 goes in row 1, column 9, you muppet!”
“Odd is Orange, Two divides Blue”
Oh dear Simon, you've given me nothing to moan about today! A couple of times I thought you were going to "do a Simon" and not follow up on a placement, but you quickly returned to the scene to tidy up. Just how it should always be from a man of your calibre. Even your keyboard control was good today - I only noticed one oopsie.
That was a lovely puzzle - a nice flow, and not too hard, but tricky enough to get the endorphins going at the end.
I didn't see that 5 were not in 2nd row in 2nd box :c... still enjoyed the puzzle
164:10 min took me this puzzle.
"Yey!"
Right off the bat I'm going to say this video shouldn't have been called "The Secrets of Parity" because that pretty much gives the initial strategy away.
Every time you recite the secret, I send more planes.
