Why is it nobody flies a proper pattern in these sims? I never did straight-in approaches unless my a/c was pretty messed up. Your last turn, lining you up with the flight deck, should allow you to see the LSO over your port wing as you straighten out. Theoretically. Actually what I did, is I learned to have certain markers (position of a point or points on the carrier island, in relation to my windscreen) picked out, and I knew I was going to catch a three-wire when I had them where I wanted.
This comment is old, but here's your answer. Without getting into the history, the FM-2 made the following changes: Removed the wing folding mechanism, which lightened the plane. Removed two of the machine guns, reducing armament from six guns to four guns. Lightened the plane, made more rounds available per-gun. Removed glass bottom in the cockpit. New engine that was lighter in weight, while producing 150 more horsepower. Added the ability to mount rocket racks to support landing operations. Hightened tail fin to deal with increased torque of engine. Misc streamlining alterations to the fuselage. End result: The FM-2 was some 530 pounds lighter than the F4F-4, while producing 150 more horsepower. Climb rate was nearly doubled over the F4F-4, and could match the Japanese KI-61. Climb rate exceeded the Zero at low altitudes. FM-2 was some 10 mph faster at level flight than the F4F-4, and accelerated much better. Turning radius was only ever so slightly behind the A6M5, making it one hell of a turn fighter. While the FM-2 was still a little bit of an anemic performer compared to ground-based fighters, as far as carrier based fighters go, it was the best the Allies had under 2,000 meters altitude. An ideal second-line fighter, and a supped up version of the Wildcat from years prior. It aptly earns the nickname of 'Wilder' Wildcat, and is the ultimate build of the airframe. It also happens to be the most widely produced, with more FM-2s having been built than all previous models put together.
Revoltz22 The Hellcat and Corsair were still better performers below 2000 meters. Turning ability isn't everything. And especially against Zeros you don't want to be turning. You want to have speed and dive advantage. The Hellcat and Corsair had those. The FM-2 did not. The FM-2 was the best the Navy had for their smaller escort carriers, though, which couldn't fit the larger Hellcats and Corsairs.

+Steven 197106 Thank you. I have the original IL2 games all the way through 1946 DVD. I haven't played it since I owned a Windows XP machine. I've never seen crew members on the flight deck. I use to fly a lot of air racing in the past. I need to dust off the game and try and flying again,

You can't dogfight a wildcat. You go for alt and dive at them. Thats the only thing that their better at.
