  • The portfolio committee on Education will today discuss the outstanding matters on the Basic Education Laws Amendment (Bela) Bill while considering whether to extend the deadline for written submission on the Bill. The purpose of the Bill is to amend the South African Schools Act and Employment of Educators Act. It seeks to introduce new regulations in South African schools, including compulsory schooling from Grade R, language policies and curriculums, the prohibition of corporal punishment and initiation practices. Some have argued that the Bill will give the minister unprecedented powers to override school governing bodies. One of the public's notable concerns in the Bela Bill is the government's intention to regulate the sale of alcohol during fundraising events. A development economist and chair of Oxfam Phelisa Nkomo joins us virtually.
