I really like all the good info that you provide. I think the Berkley would be good for everyone not just off grid
Agree....thanks TC
Our water comes from a spring about 900 feet up from us. We have a Berkey but only used it before when we were living out of a 12' x 20' Amish shed and collecting rain water like Jen & Jay. The spring water is not filtered and we drink it straight. Every 6-months we test the water using one of those kits you can buy from the big box hardware stores. So far, (10 years) all has been good. I do like your filter set-up and I may add that for kicks and giggles. 73 & God Bless
Love it
I’ve had my Berkey three months definitely changed the taste of my water, which is springfed. I didn’t know I needed to clean the filters that often and actually how to do it. Your video is extremely informative. Thank you so so much. You have a blessed day.
So Glad it was helpful.......Best Wishes my friend
I really like our Berkley water filter system. I've had mine for about 6 yrs now and just love how it makes the water taste better than the store bought water bottles. I use vinegar and water to clean mine so there's no soapy residue built up on the inside of it. And the vinegar takes care of the bacteria if there is any. Thanks for sharing your video. Take care
Thanks for watching
❤😊 yes I have a Big Berkey too ,love it. I lived off grid in the country and bought this to use from lake and rain water, had it for 7 years and never got sick either. A must for off grid people.
That is awesome!
Thank you Jay and Jen 👋🏻Always great to hear from you my friends 👍🏻 God Bless 🙏🏻 Appreciate you! 🫶🏻
Best wishes my friend
Love the cabin! We love our Berkey too.
Love and enjoy watching your videos. May the lord bless and protect you and Jen and explaining your water system
I put a sawyer squeeze on my sink faucet at my off grid cabin I use pool shock in my rain tanks to kill micro bugs and viruses and the sawyer as a second line of defense against the bugs I don’t drink the water I use it for cleaning up and bathing I’m looking for a good deal on a water filtration system like a berky
The berkey is pricey.....but I found ours used and saved big.....so.make sure you check out resale sites for sure. Best wishes
I purchased one in 2020 and its been sitting in the closet ever since. I watched someone do a review on different filters and started using the zero water pitcher. I think i will get my Berkey out and start using it. The zero water has the best tasting water though. Its just a little pricey to use, average of 15 dollars every 20 days or so for two adults and a very thirsty shep/chow mix. Great content 👍
Nice.....I'll have to look into that system as well. Thanks for sharing David
We definitely need something like this. I found a Canadian made brand for cheaper and it does the same stuff. I'll have to because we had left a few jugs of water up at the camp and Jason said they had already started getting algae in less than a month. That's from untreated well water from home. Oh well...live and learn. Also a PITA to bring them back and forth
Jugs are no fun.....jugs of water.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen 🤣
Love your videos. Most in depth demos I have found. Many assume I know something. Glad you don't. 🥰
Well done… bottom line, you can’t live without water! We have always enjoyed sharing products that have done well for us also.
Very very true......I figured now that we have been at this for a few years, we could share our experiences. 👍
Great system. Thanks.
😊👍
Great thorough explanation! We have city artesian well water, but there are issues if a line breaks, so will consider getting one to keep in our camper in case the need arises again. We do have some chlorine in the water so we cook with it as the chlorine will evaporate during cooking, but we only drink our refrigerator filtered water which has the chlorine filtered out.
We have a Berkey too. We have been using it for years. With the tests in recent years that show Berkey was not telling the truth about what their filters actually filter out, we stopped trusting them. Also, I thought you couldn’t get their filters anymore? That was the recent news we heard.
Thank you 🎉 I have always wondered 🤔 how the Burke works !!😮😊
Nice....glad I could help
Great information Jay did a good job on explaining the process... I think the boss of the swamp built one with 2 SS pots from Walmart and just bought the spout and Berkeley filters separately... thanks for sharing there eh!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 great information
Thanks for the in-depth tutorial. It's sometimes hard to judge an item online. Have you ever had to get new gaskets, have yours ever split, or cracked? Thanks again for sharing. Don't mind the Dudly Downers. Their moms must not have taught them that if you don't have anything nice to say to not say anything at all.
Hey Meg.....glad you appreciated the info we shared. We have never had an issue with the gaskets.....they are nice and thick and hold up well from what we have seen. Really appreciate the encouragement.....it seems even when you are just trying to help and share personal experiences, people jump to conclusions and start being grumpy for no reason, kind of sad really. Anyway, best wishes my friend and thank you for being one of the good ones 😊👍❤️
Always look forward to your vids!!
I appreciate that!
thanks for the information my friends
Love your channel! I don't live off grid, but the water here is terrible. What I do is purchase my water from a company that specializes in safe, healthy and affordable water. They also have a propane business. The water comes in 5 gallon containers and they use the reverse osmosis system. Once a month they run a sale and the price of a bottle is $2.50. I have 5 bottles (25 gallons) so I have plenty of time to decide when to get water. The cooler cost less than $100 and has both heat and cooling.
I've been wanting a berkey will need I for our off grid cabin. I have a Simpure it's a counter top reverse osmosis. I really really love ours but it does require power. I may plug it into our solar generator and see how much power it pulls since it only runs when you refill I or pull water from it.
It looks like a great system!
Thanks buddy.......😊👍
Thank you!😊😊
Any time!
LOVELY KITCHEN.... LOVE IT
Thank you so much 😊
@@OffgridwithJayandJen 😍
I use the sim pur reverse osmosis counter top. It pulls 30 watts while filtering draws nothing off my power station. I like the ultra violet light feature. I will be picking up a berkey type as well the more the better.
Nice......we had a couple companies offer to give us some counter top units.....glad to know you like yours. 👍
Hey Jay, do you put the gasket on the inside? lol. Good stuff buddy. I’m ordering one so I’m glad you’re doing a expo on it.
Ha ha ha, lol. Glad you liked the video tho, 😊. If you are really ordering one, use our link please, it helps us out and we get a little kick back.....doesn't cost ya anything either. Thank you
Did you ever think about making a shallow pond to use to water the garden ? We have a show pond 5ft deep by 8ft radios.
A pond would be nice
Jay - does the bottom of the unit have a ‘window’ (like coffee makers) so you can tell how low/high the water level is?😍🇨🇦
It does not....they do make a glass attachment that hooks to the bottom inline of the spicket.....it shows you the water level. I just lift the top part up to look inside.....but not everyone could do that. I'll try to get Jen to find that part and put a link in the description box.
Dulton filter where the original maker of this ceramic style filter. There about 60% the cost of berkey. Dulton also makes under sink pressurized filters that also do this.
Nice....I'm going to Google it now. Thanks
Thanks for the water vids, they are useful and have been giving me some ideas! I do want to know - you are not using berkey water to wash dishes, correct? Is there concern for bacteria, etc since after using dish soap you would rinse with the water only run through the less beefy filters?
I was kinda worried about that, but I think the two filters I have under the cabin clean out anything to worry about.....and we have not gotten sick yet....so there is that.
Ha just asked about this! Very informative I have heard it is hard to get berkey replacement filters right now for various reasons. Have you heard of pro-one. I think they are out of Michigan and fit berkey. I don’t have any backup berkey black ones
I was noticing some being sold out as well.....but I didn't look that hard. I'm not sure If the other ceramic filters do a good job or not.
Nice video Jay!!! How do you keep track of the gallons you have filtered so you know when to purchase a new filter?
They start to slo down some, or do the math,,gal x week x month, gets you close…
I believe they become slow to filter and will take forever to filter. We bought this unit used with two used filters.....used it for a couple years back while in the camper....then two years ago we bought new ones just to be safe.
Great Informative video, Jay. I just use a Brit filter in my fridge that holds several litres. Free, cold, clean water. I also use refillable Yeti drink containers.
Nice.....well water or city?
@@OffgridwithJayandJen city water that’s why I filter it for drinking.
@@paulpuckerinGM smart
Wasn’t Berkey involved in some sort of lawsuit related to their claims of purity?
Someone mentioned that......I read up on it a bit.....seemed like more of a terminology thing, rather than serious problems
How often do they recommend you change the filters out? Just per gallon usage? Or is there a time aspect as well?
Just per gallon really.....if they slow down too much or won't filter...time to change them. If they are consistently used and kept wet, they will work well for years. If they get dry, they just need to be soaked or primed again.
Berkley system is very expensive. There are a lot of great videos on how to make a similar setup using 5 gallon food grade buckets with lids and the filters. I tried it and it worked great. Not as pretty as the Berkey, put a whole lot more budget friendly.
It is a bit expensive but clean water and not having to look at a bucket on my kitchen counter is worth it to us. Plus I bought this one second hand on marketplace for 100 dollars, so cheap too.
for those who would like to know, water filters for home use, wells and such cost more than any cities water, and you dont get sewage, some hidden costs in living out there,
It does still cost money to live off the grid
@@OffgridwithJayandJen yes i was raised on well water myself, but with coal strip mining we had to start filtering it, and filter systems cost more than city, such as solar, its good and all. but when you price running electric to the woods, 10k is cheaper than 100K for new lines. some people think its easy, and cheap, with no other numbers applyied, just letting them know, connivence cost money too.
It's almost $400 on Amazon, there are cheaper options.
I purchased my Big Berkey in 2020 on prime for 230 dollars before all the madness started.
@@davidwolfe7777 Thats still way too much. U can make the same thing with two buckets,a spigot, and less expensive filters.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
If you have a carbon filter under the house inline, why use a Berkey?
I'm not sure the small filter under the house makes it drinkable......but maybe. We use it for everything else......but drinking we still do the berkey
Did Berkey win their EPA lawsuit?
I just read a bit on it.
...didn't find an answer
I cant afford the Berkie! Im in limited income. All i have is Brita filtered pitcher that i keep in fridge . Wished i could do kre i rent. Donit own my home! Guess uts hopeless.😢
I actually found ours used on marketplace for 100 dollars. So if you look around maybe you could find one too. Best wishes my friend
I think your system is pretty much the bare essential. We are likely to do the same in our new place. Since our system isn't fully set up, for now, since we aren't full time, we just keep a supply of gallon jugs filled at home along with store bought water bottles. A little cumbersome but works.
Lost me on this one my friend. Close to $400 for a stainless steel can with 2 water filters. Me thinks Berkey is laughing all the way to the bank.
I get it...you can make your own with stainless pots from wally world if you really want to, I found mine used on marketplace for 100 dollars 5 years ago, so it didn't make sense for me to make my own. 😊
I'm still not convinced the Birkey is all that, too many people have proven it isn't what it says it is, and it's definitely way overpriced.
I mean it's hard to put a price on safe drinking water. 5 years and we are still alive and well.....so you can't really argue with that. You can listen to the drama of those who don't have any experience, or those who use one daily
Dang its all about making money in the off grid life now a days. See who they get to give them money too talk about their product
This isn't a paid promotion... it's a product we have been using for 5 years and get many questions about. Only money we make off this video is from views and interactions. Sorry you're having a bad day. Hope it gets better.
Drip Drip Drip
😁
Its overpriced by a mile. You're paying for the name. You can build the same thing and get cheaper filters WAY WAY WAY Cheaper.
Sometimes it's ok to invest in something so useful and important, but I do agree it is hard on the wallet. We actually bought ours used on the local marketplace for 100 dollars, so I encourage others to look there too. Best wishes
very informative.
