Once you've seen this, you'll never forget it. Some of the extras in the movie actually were in the 442nd, from what I've read. It rings true to the spirit of the times, and the determination of the Nisei to persevere through all adversity.
Only the character Van Johnson played was from Texas, he was actually from Connecticut. He was in quite a few war films, Battleground 1949 & Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo 1944.
during the unpopular war, a lot of the ground pounders who use to smoke switched to chewing tobacco. seems the Viet Cong could smell American cigarettes, in the bush and could locate American troops that way and ambush them, so if the troops were at a fire base, no problem, but out in the bush cigarette smell gave a position away
