Great to see you do this job as i am about to do samething. Why did your lever break? Mine broke due to it being very stiff to get it in and out of gear. I worried the the mechanism is seized inside the lower unit. Was yours free?

@@davidelvin1380 same here, there was no grease on The lever... So while switching from neutral to Gear it broke

Anyhow you inspired me to do the job. I found out the bolt on top of the gear lever came out. So that extra height prevented to go ahead.
Where did you buy the gear lever?
From a Yamaha dealer, you can find The Part number from the net. It was pretty cheap
