      I can not get over Caroline as a love interest….. I'm sooooo lost. It just makes zero sense in all universes! But yes loved on your videos on the “reboot”. Honestly I should have just watched the last 10-15 mins of the last episode and that would have been all I really needed. The rest was pointless. Nothing from this can carry over back to Rayln and Boyd….

    • @themiddleagedbaby

      @@carissapostel5506 Yeah...what we got from this reboot was a RINO. Raylan In Name Only. Him hooking up with her made no sense on about 5 different levels, but they creators just NEEDED to send the message so they made it happen too.
      As for Raylan & Boyd, I could have watched whole seasons of those two just banter back and forth in the old series...but once they put it all to bed with that great finale, all things being equal, I'd have preferred they let that lie. Rebooting after that ended, I think, is a disservice to the writers that gave us that and to Tim Olyphant and Walton Goggins who acted it so beautifully.

    It never works when the 'show runners' (writers), try & outsmart the main character. IT'S ABOUT RAYLAN BEING RAYLAN, not some political, social insight. I guess they forgot WWED (what would Elmore do), that was their theme, when in doubt, during the original series. Oh well just another swing & miss in the entertainment world.

    I have to agree, Raylan is a fish out of water in Detroit, which I think is pretty smart, but he's not the main character, no real relationship with his boss or anyone except his daughter and Manzell, and hasn't pulled his gun yet. I think we forget how well the original was written and the synergy between the characters.

      To this day, I'm hard pressed to think of a better pilot/1st episode than the first episode of Justified. So many things happen in that. We see Raylan shoot Tommy bucks in Miami, meet his Chief in Miami who transfers him back to Kentucky, learn that he's from there and that he has a past relationship with Art, meet Boyd and Dewey, meet Ava, meet Winona, and see him shoot Boyd in the chest and beat Dewey twice. I get that Leonard had basically written the entire pilot as "Fire in the Hole" but holy hell it's chock full of great stuff!

    The story is actually pretty good. The problem is, it doesn't need a Raylan Givens. It's like trying to put a good thing on another good thing, when the two good things together fail. Kinda like ice cream and ketchup. Both pretty good on their own, but not so much when put together.

    Raylen has lots of "against the odds" showdowns, with old west style fast draw face downs. In real life, agencies would avoid this (wait for backup, team with a plan). I would guess that it occasionally may have happened, but most of the time, the marshal has 20 guys on the team with a plan to surround, surprise, and overwhelm a suspect. A realistc show would look like a news report on an arrest, not an old west gunfight.

    I remember that first series. I was just getting into FX and their edgy shows. I rarely missed an episode I loved it so.
    I think this new one is missing its charm. It was that facade of politeness, and Raylan seemed to have a bit more lilt back then. Ill see this one through for sure, but it'll never come close to the original. No charm and no Boyd.
    Speaking of which, I'd love to see a recap of the first run! New subscriber here 😊

      First of all, thanks for being here and hope you enjoy the channel!
      Second, yeah...I'd love to do a recap of the entire first series for sure.
      Complete honesty here: That's hard to do just starting out as I'm trying to grow the channel. It's not a "money" thing at all (since there is none) but more of an attention thing. I have a whole host of movies and TV shows I'd like to talk about but unless they're fairly topical it actually kind of hurts the channel at this stage, if that makes sense. If you look back at some of my earlier videos, they are about older movies I love and they got no traction. They're not significantly worse than the new ones, it's just that with few subs that knew what to expect from me it would require people seeing a review of an old TV show or movie in their YT feed they may have never heard of and be interested in hearing a guy they also haven't heard of talking about it. haha Turns out that's a hard sell!
      But at some point, if I'm lucky enough, I'd love to have the community here built up enough to where I can do something like have a playlist where I go though each season of Justified, or maybe even each episode, and enough subscribers be interested in it because they want to hear me do that. I also have a list of Sports Movies, and just older movies that I've set up a playlist called "How have you not seen this?" where I talk about great movies that have flown under the radar. Please check them out if you have time and be sure to let me know what you think, or if you can see any progression in the production, delivery, etc.
      Sorry to talk your ear off, but the prospect of doing that makes me excited but I wanted to explain why I can't just yet. For a bit, I need to stick to more topical shows or thoughts on current issues and hopefully someday soon they'll be enough people such as yourself here that'll be interested in some deep dives of older stuff. Fingers crossed!
      Thanks again for being here...sincerely appreciate it and hope to see you around. MAB

    I'm 6 episodes in and I just keep waiting for Raylan to get in trouble. He hasn't. They gave that trait to his daughter, and I get it that people change when they become parents. Raylan has changed. One of my favorite aspects of Raylan's character was how he was always pushing the line, always testing the system to see what he could get away with. Raylan is just sleepwalking through City Primeval. The show is more concerned with people standing next to cars and talking (which has happened A LOT in this show) then it is in being a compelling crime drama. They just forgot to make this show fun, forgot to make it exciting, forget to add in tension, chemistry and narrative, and don't seem interested in making it the least little bit violent.

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Год назад +1

      This is a great point and I'm glad you added it! Exactly...he was always on the edge of being in deep shit with Art, and without that he's not "the bad boy" anymore, which lessens his character. Raylan isn't the voice of reason, he's "the angriest man" Winona's ever known. That's what makes him compelling. Raylan was what...40 when the show ended? So 50 now? Yeah, we don't up and change our entire personalities at that age! What fun would that be...we'd taken half our lives cultivating that! Thanks, MAB.

      @themiddleagedbaby  Год назад +1

      Thanks, man. I absolutely LOVE the original series, so given how it seem virtually impossible to revamp anything at this point without utterly destroying it, I was pretty worried. Thankfully, as of yet, it hasn't tarnished the old show...but it also hasn't been worth the effort of bringing it back as far as I'm concerned.
      As for Raylan specifically, yeah...it's clear they've made him less "Raylan." And it's not that they couldn't have done some of this organically, but they'd have needed to explain it some way. Maybe have him sitting down with one of the Detroit cops who had looked up his past and seen he'd changed a bit over the last decade and him explaining that having Willa and finally putting Kentucky to bed for him made him a better man, or something. 😂 Instead, it's clear that the show runners wanted him to be different in this "new" time, but never bothered to explain WHY the guy that never stopped pulling his sidearm or beating suspects was suddenly a completely different guy.
      Anyway, glad you enjoyed it and appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thanks, MAB

    I agree, using profanity gratuitously simply for the purpose of using profanity just loses the effect. I don't see this series coming back. And that's almost a shame. Because sans Raylan, it's actually a pretty good story, with some pretty good performances. But the question the viewer keeps asking is, why is Raylan even there? The story doesn't need him, and could stand on its own. As I understand it Quentin Tarantino and Olyphant thought these two could go together, City and Justified. Obviously, they were wrong. At least they way this was written.

    • @themiddleagedbaby
      @themiddleagedbaby  Год назад +2

      Agreed...he doesn't belong in this story.
      The profanity really bugs me, and not because I have any issues with so-called "bad" words. It's not that at all...it's just a consistency thing. For advertising reasons, FX didn't go as hard when Justified first aired, so in my mind if you want it to remain consistent with the universe you created, it should use the same rules. Otherwise you have people going, "Wait...none of the criminals ever said 'Fuck' in Harlan? Or odder yet, the LEOs?!?" There's NO WAY Tim and the Army buddy of Boyd's would not have been dropping f-Bombs left and right! haha

I’m still struggling with this one 5 episodes in and 5 is the worst one yet. I find the romance unbelievable and the characters are so boring. I agree with you about them having no dimension. The villains so far are the worst part of the show. Every character including the villains in the original series had so much substance to them. Some of which we actually started to root for. I'd have been interested in seeing the show had it just been Elmore Leonard's original novel brought to screen. I'd have also been interested in seeing another show which extended Raylan's story, provided it made sense. But they clearly didn't have faith in the story without sticking the "Justified" logo on it and forcing Raylan in there...and that's too bad, because had they simply made what Leonard gave them I'm sure it would have been great.
      Instead, they watered down one of the best TV characters of all time to make him fit into a story he was never in, and in doing so doomed the show as people compared it to the old one. Yeah...drives me nuts! haha

    After watching the first four episodes of this “revival” I had to go and read the book this was based on. The big problem with this series is that the book it is adapting is simply not justified. The fact that Raylan Givens was never in this story to begin with should have been the first sign this was a mistake. I’m halfway through reading the book and I have to say that judging from the first four episodes, this has been a very solid adaptation of this book. So much so in fact that there are quite a few scenes that were a complete copy from the book line for line. Raylan meeting sandy at the apartment and clement and sandy in the Albanian’s secret room come to mind. And there we come to the problem. This is perhaps such a good adaptation, that Raymond Cruz’s role as the protagonist in the book is so crucial that Raylan Givens’ personality and demeanor had to match Raymond Cruz. So unfortunately fans of justified were baited and tricked to watch this show because of Raylan being in it and the series having the name justified on top of the book’s title. I don’t blame the writers but I blame FX for not having faith in an Elmore Leonard novel when all of his works have had many adaptations over the years. They should have just gotten a popular actor to portray Raymond Cruz or in fact just have Olyphant play Cruz instead of Givens.

      100% spot on! Having not yet read the novel I didn't have that insight, but that makes perfect sense. There's a reason it feels as though Raylan is sleep walking through this, and it's because he's literally playing a different character.
      Yeah, I think FX could have sold people on the show without shoehorning in Raylan and the Justified name. That was ONLY going to draw comparisons and when the show was clearly much different you'd start to get all these attempts at explaining the differences away.
      Really appreciate you taking the time to lay that you. Hope people take the time to read your post as I think it adds a ton here. Thanks, MAB

    I had a co-worker whose husband was a federal marshall. Her description of his job was absolutely nothing like Justified. They lived in rural Montana, she said they don't care where you live because they send you all over. What he did was things like arrest people, but it was not a "lone ranger" operation. It was large groups, planned, She said nothing about investigating or chasing. In reality, they don't shoot people very often, the goal is to get them into a surprise situation where the bad guy immediately realizes he has no chance. I doubt her husband ever shot anyone. When a cop does shoot someone, it is an emotional experience requiring recovery and counseling and if a man can shoot someone every week with no emotional impact, I don't want him as LE officer.

      Yeah, it makes perfect sense that a show based in Detroit will have a largely black cast. As a guy that grew up outside New Orleans and still lives in South Louisiana, that rings true. My issue is that nearly everything created in the past several years is CLEARLY attempting to push a political message, regardless of whether it has any place in the show. Raylan has never once shown any hint of being a bigot...he's an equal opportunity asshole! Having characters be openly racist towards him, and having him push back so little has been bothersome to watch.
      As for sex scenes, hadn't thought of that. Looking back, that was actually much more of a topic in the previous show given a ton of things happened in and around Audrey's Whorehouse. As I mentioned in the video, I have been bothered by the language here. Not because I have some issue with words, but because given the first show didn't go that hard it makes this one seem out of place. It's more of a continuity thing for me, but either way it takes me out of the show and makes me further realize this is Justified in name only.
      Thanks, MAB

    I was SO disappointed in this show. Boring, daughter is an idiot, how many white racial slurs can you put in, the plot is ridiculous. They carry a book around in their pockets, the bad guy continues to taunt him…why? The characters didn’t make sense. I was so excited to see it. It’s crap and woke.

    Real portrayals of law firms, trials, police, doctors, hospitals, courts, etc etc etc would come over as a documentary and rarely get large audiences. In real life, the object is to avoid drama and just do the process. Tv shows have to be unrealistic to get large audience, so usually thay have to do things that are not allowed in real life, or at least shouldn't be. In real life, Dirty Harry and Raylen would be put on a program, disciplined, terminated, transferred, or otherwise stopped from vigilante justice. Do you really want lots of Raylens out there shooting whoever they think needs to be shot? What could go wrong?

    What the new show misses: world building, warm tones, relationships, complexity. Everything is graded ultra blue and dark. Most of the season happens at night. Most of it happens in confined spaces lit by depressing fluorescent lights. Raylan is haggard, gaunt, gristly, and slow. Feels like a cash grab in the wake of Reacher season 1 success but given the boring story and poor dialog of Reacher season 2.

      100%. One of my big things is recommending getting hard copies of the things you love before the powers that be
      "memory hole" them or alter them in some way. I also suggest finding high quality used copies rather than giving a dime to the studios by buying them new from someplace like Amazon.
      That's a good point. Mansell would have have been either one of the guys in Boyd's crew or one of the lesser villains in the series. In terms of how he's being portrayed in the series, Mansell is s worse character than Darrel Crowe, Jr but being played by a much more charismatic actor. Old Raylan would have already forced his hand and put his ass down.

    Nope. Writing is not as good, plot lines are superficial, and the characters are lame. I'll stick to watching my reruns of the original on DVD.

      Understandable. I hate quitting things (I’m STILL trying to slog through the final few seasons of Supernatural) so I’ll see it through, but it hasn’t been much fun.
      I didn’t mention it in the video but you can also see he’s gonna hook up with the defense attorney.😂. Think back to Raylan’s lineup in the original series. Winona, Ava, the blonde chick from the bar he was living above, Carla Gugino who played someone in the Justice Depart that Raylan had obviously hooked up with when she had been a marshal, the bounty hunter chick that called Raylan to moonlight that time, the college brunette that threw herself at him who was a poker player. All incredibly hot. Then there’s Carolyn from City Primeval…😂.

      Well holy hell…did I call that or what?!? 😂😂. Episode 5 literally opens up with Raylan in her bed. Sure, after every smoking hot woman he was linked to in the original, it makes perfect sense that he hooks up with an unpleasant woman that’s shaped like a potato. How 2023 of them…😂

    I saw the theme of this storyline as "People Change".
    Raylan's time as a marshal was coming to an end if he didn't stop shooting potential criminals, deserved or not. Bad PR can severely impact government grants, and the US Marshals' Service stood to lose millions in federal money if Givens didn't stop pulling that gun!
    Reality won, and those 21st century gunfights lost. Waco was the nail in the coffin for the "gunfighter" image, thanks to out-of-control lawmen who underestimated the public's response to their heavy-handed tactics. Politicians who authorize government expenditures obtain their power from voters, and voters believe what they see and hear from the media. Clever defense attorneys hire the best PR firms to present clients' issues with extreme sensitivity, and Raylan is a fish out of water in that environment.
    Thanks to the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, every law enforcement-related death is now examined under a microscope, as it should be. Raylan's actions may have been -- and were -- genuinely justified, but he's lumped in with thugs, racists and "bad guys" who don't belong on ANY police force.
