I've been listening to your music all day at work and I've got to say, some of the best, most authentic blues I've ever heard. Might be wicked to say, but I believe you could keep up with old Papa Mactell himself :-) Absolutely marveling at your skill. I'd love to sound like you after another 20 years of practice.
thanks, Peter. most of this is in the rear view mirror for me anymore. There’s no way I could possibly agree with you about Mctell, although I appreciate the compliment. thanks for commenting.
Frankie you are the man, also love you reverend gary davis stuff! You got exactly the same taste of guitar playing as me:P Good to learn from you. Keep up the good work!
Was listening to Gospel blues ..you sound as if you were back in Mississippi delta down by the river side...great i lone to play Gospel like those kats back n da day...sing on brother play on...is it a 12string you're playing
Wow! Amazing. I found yr cover of Delia and posted a few comments one asking if you covered anymore McTell songs....I have my answer here...I was hoping you had covered this song and you did.....I was thrilled when I seen the thumbnail. Thank you very much for posting. You have amazing taste in music, and are extremely talented! I subscribed.
Hi - I'm glad you like it, but I don't play this music anymore. It's pretty easy to see both my hands in this... the tuning is vestapol but down to about Aflat or G. You should be able to work it out... just give it some time.
Frankie, you arent willin to sell any spare 12 string guitars you have, would you? You have THEE best 12 string collection. I am teaching McTell's music, and I'd love to buy one off you if you are looking to get rid of any extra? You are the best McTell player ever!
hahah ok then. I totally understand. Thought I'd ask; apologies for assuming. I absolutely love your work, and your BWM stuff is the best on RUclips. Thanks for replying. What is the name of the company that makes the 12 string you play if you dont mind me asking? Super appreciate it man! @@frankie12string
It’s a Fraulini Francesca, built by Todd Cambio: fraulini.com - mine is #4... got it probably 12 years ago.... he builds wonderful instruments. I think we’ve discussed them before.
Thanks. I never really liked performing solo very much. The groups I used to play with - Little Brothers, Poor Riders - played festivals here and there but my days of playing blues and old-time are basically behind me at this point.
What gauge strings do you use on those detuned 12-strings? I just got a ladder-braced 12 string, and I have trouble with intonation on the lightest two courses when I detune as low as B or C. I think I need something heavier on those, but I'd prefer a set that's sold like that rather than always having to mix and match. BTW, I have nothing to do with your part of the country (not by choice, just by distance) yet you ran into a music buddy of mine once, Stephen O'Regan, when you were out visiting Ohio. You asked him some plumbing questions. Small world.
Hi Matt - the strings I was using in my manic McTell mode are probably lighter than you think... the 1st course is a pair of unison .011s and the sixth course was probably no heavier than a .057 with a .026 as an octave - every course is strung in octaves except the first. The guitar I'm using for this tune has a 26 1/2" scale and I'm tuned down maybe to almost G-flat in vestapol. I probably have a higher tolerance for wonky intonation than most people. If you see Steve, say hi - I liked meeting him and playing with him... he's a nice guy and a good player. I don't play much blues or old-time these days, so I'm not sure how much I could show you if we ever did cross paths, but thanks for the note.
Have you ever tried a baritone 12-string set? I don't know if that would work with your scale length, but you're certainly playing down in that range already. I don't know if the 2nd course would be in octaves with that kind of set, but one could probably find the single string on juststrings.com to remedy that.
@@frankie12string Excellent information. Very ironic that they use this video on the fraulini website! I myself enjoy playing McTell's music. But this guitar really brings it up a notch. I've been playing McTell on my resonator but that is getting really silly and old fast. I def will pick up a guitar from them soon. Just never could remember the name. Thanks again sir! I really appreciate it.
No, but it looks like you can see my hands pretty clearly... maybe just try working from the video and see what ya get. The real challenge is the relationship between the singing and the accompaniment and TAB can't help with that.
@@Tyte-m4y those are the right pitches for the strings. I’m pretty far from this music these days. The video does give a pretty clear view of what I’m doing on the guitar…. why not give it a try based on what you can already hear and see? you’ll learn a lot more doing that than listening to me talk about it, I promise you.
Depends on what you mean by ‘open G’. If you mean spanish tuning (used for Furry Lewis’ Turn Your Money Green, or Charlie Patton’s Screamin’ and Hollerin’ The Blues, then that’s not the tuning I’m using, although I *am* tuned down to about G-flat. In the comments below, you’ll see I’m playing in vestapol tuning but tuned down (waaaaaay down) to G-flat.
Real blues. Thank you.
thanks. I do what I can with what I got.
this is unbelievable. oh, to be able to play and sing like that ...
Thanks. If you keep working at it, you'll find your voice.
This is amazing, I love what you've done here.
Thanks. I did what I could.
Beautiful approach ; nice and laid back . Your vocals are outstanding ! Love it..
Thanks! This song was always a comfort to me - I'm glad you like it.
Just great. My gratitude to you and wife.
Thanks. The ship with the wife on it sailed a few years back, but I'm sure she'll appreciate the sentiment.
I think the world of this !!!
thanks man
you're welcome. thanks for listening!
I love this song so much, sounds just as good as Blind Willy in your hands.
That's kind of you to say.... Thanks!
Not really, the feeling is in his voice and his playing. I couldn't care less whether it's a vintage Stella or not.
You did this wonderful song justice and added your own interpretation. I'm in awe. Thank you!
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Great. I love the way you don't rush your playing
Thanks! Doesn't make sense to rush a song like this... every note matters.
As the other guy said, the way you don´t rush is just captivating. Beautiful version, loved it.
glad you liked it - thanks. In general, there's some stuff in life that might be rush-able. not music.
You do Mr. McTell proud...this is a stellar cover of an outstanding song.
thank you!
Sounds amazing
thanks.

Beautiful. Can you make a lesson on this song? Nobody has yet. I'd like to know tuning and just how to get around the rhythm

love this. wish u were my dad lol

of the materialist apocalypse.

Works for me fella.
glad to hear it.
Great stuff. What tuning are playing in?
Vestapol, but really low. About A-flat.

I just make up sets when I need them based on what I think I need to achieve a particular sound or feel. Works for me.
May I know the brand of the guitar please. I really would appreciate it!
same 12-string I use in every video I've ever done with one: a Fraulini Francesca (#4). In many ways, my musical soulmate, although I do wander.

No, but it looks like you can see my hands pretty clearly... maybe just try working from the video and see what ya get. The real challenge is the relationship between the singing and the accompaniment and TAB can't help with that.
+frankie12string well could you tell me the tuning at least
Vestapol tuning down to about G-flat:
G-flat D-flat G-flat B-flat D-flat G-flat
Octaves on all strings but the first.
+frankie12string thanks I'll try to figure it out
I read the comments on tuning, and I think you are saying that you are tuned to Db Ab Db F Ab Db. Is that correct?
nope. vestapol at Ab. you have the right string relationships, but you’re at Db. this is another 5 half steps below that.
Okay, thanks! So the tuning would be Ab Eb Ab C Eb Ab?
Is there any chance you would do an instructional video on how you play this song?
