It was 1974, I was 14, lived across the street from SUNY, Stony brook campus. We were hangin in our fort in the woods by the highway, drinking shmits beer.we heard off in distance, pounding drums, over the tree line we saw the lights from football field, with smoke rising..we rode our bikes to the edge of field, left them, joined in the crowd of older kids...it was the dead..our minds/lives changed forever that night.Bob Marley was on bill too....we have never been the same..thank you god
I didn't realize Marley was there too. It seems like you got on the bus at a great time, not just the obvious but to be able to just walk in. When I was 14 was Brent era but before Jerry's coma. The best chance for us to have gotten in was Alpine Valley as other than Poplar Creek all other regular venues in the Chicago-Milwaukee region were indoors and the Dead were some years before Soldier Field yet. It sucked in my situation as I didn't just live down the road from Alpine and no older siblings, cousin lived with us but I don't remember if he had a driver's license but no car. He was more into Springsteen, Prince, other stuff like that and he loved to make my existence miserable. I still enjoyed the company but his older brother's would've probably brought me had they not been grown and away. Many of my friends, from there, never got on the bus but I did get to know some older siblings that were either Deadheads or atleast liked the music and scene enough to always go. Sorry to carry on but you got me recalling such amazing times and remembering how many times I should've gone but didn't as I hadn't gotten that fever yet but the water was slowly rising to a boil. If I could've just been a decade older, or decade and a half...I'd probably be dead long ago though. Headlines "Man drinks a gallon of liquid after accidentally snorting a gram of Crystal L, wanders onto train tracks...or slithers into lake and gets run over by boat". Well, honestly I firmly believe no one could walk had they ingested that much. I personally know that nowhere near that much laid me out, could ambulate but crashed into everything, then recline or lay down again and let music speak to me. Dead definitely changed my mindset and in turn perspective and then my soul.
Could. NOT. agree. MORE. The boys really knew how to bring it and make it sound like musical sexing. and the bands they inspired to carry on their music like the current iteration of the JGB, The Dead Ahead (aka terrapin flyer, aka the schwag) and Dark Star Orchestra not to mention Further and countless other jam bands have really carried the torch and made this sound come alive post Jerry. I love me some dead and the cover bands really scratch an itch that never will be scratched save further.
The greatest rock and rock band of our generation...and the greatest song to boot. I've heard about 3 dozen versions of this tune and each one is special. They never played the song the same way twice and that's why they were so damn special.
thestoryplease just like a trip they make you come up and once the peak is hit it’s down hill from there lol if you like songs that are engineered like that you really ought to check out butterfly bleu by iron butterfly now that song is a fucking trip
@Randall Dickerson: the entire Metamorphosis album by Iron Butterfly was engineered to blow minds. My very first purchase of what I thought would be rock & roll, it totally blew my mind, I was only 12! I didn't understand or appreciate it until many years later. A rabid vinyl collecting boyfriend of mine sold it to a Japanese collector in 1992, he got way more for the pristine condition album than he told me he got. Never trust a collector-trader!
Got lost for 3 years on tour then got married a JGB 6/19/94 JERRY ASKED US WHAT WE WANTED TO HEAR ''THEY LOVE EACH OTHER"/WAS WHAT WE CAME UP WITH AND THEY PLAYED SECOND SONG 1ST SET
Thanks for sharing....the best song the Dead did, IMHO. Everyone in the band got a chance to take it to the limit....controlled chaos as another 'tuber opined.
My 21 year old daughter ( senior in college) is finally catching on to the boys. I am a puny 36 show veteran, and just wanted to relate to her how FUCKING GREAT these guys were. We caught Dead and Company at Fenway this past summer ...but it didn't have a major effect on her. Now --she studies with them on in the background, and has recently told me she listens ALL THE TIME now. This clip was one she said "just makes me feel good Dad" . It's happening......
Reminds me of something I read about how you'll hear other great guitarists solos and think "that's awesome". But you'll hear Jerry and think "that's beautiful". Obviously there are exceptions but I've found that true in lots of cases
jerry knew - and like he said before he stole that face right off yer head there weren't much to do now but...........'smile, smile, smile,,,,' indeed!!!
Thats good cause it aint for everyone if everyone liked them they would never have become who they were, it takes a keen ear and love for MUSIC Dead Style
This from back in the day when Phil's bass emphasized the rhythm and Bob's guitar could push in unexpected directions. Keith filling in leaving no holes anywhere and coming to the fore to create great peaks with the band. 67 - 74 my favorite days of the Dead.
oh boy. who said ten years was a long time (a. jerry garcia) had no f@#:-)!ng idea. laughs. so now what, thanks for all the memories. you are missed. love me.
I thought about giving this a thumbs down just to be a smartass. But I changed my mind....one of the few things legally permitted nowadays! What up JDarks? Hope you are well, you Grateful Dead Fan!
You could be born, start kindergarten, start Highschool, graduate from collage, get married, buy your home with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids before one of their songs end xD
Levi Toms: Make love not war was always a good plan. OTOH, remember what the lady in the Lord of the Rings said, it needs but one foe to breed a war, and those who have not swords can still die upon them. She was just practicing when Aragorn reached out and blocked her sword with his; if she had been serious about her reply to that, he would have been in a lot of trouble. In the real world, sometimes we don't have to go looking for war - the war finds us instead. Si vis pacem, para bellum.
I think you are underestimating the musical talent of the GD as well as the difficulty of most of their songs. (See Crazy Fingers) Phil Lesh was composing orchestras at Berkley School of Music when he joined the band. The GD often played in cut time, performed 3 part harmonies in almost every song. IMO, Jerry is a much better vocalist and vocal melody writer than Trey. I think that the GD would make YEM and Divided Sky sparkle. For the record, Phish is in my top 3. I love Phish.
Your opinion is without a doubt, yours. However, there is no comparing any of those musicians with the Dead. Not that any are better or worse (again, it's personal choice) but they are in a class by themselves. As far as Phish goes though, hmmmm I wonder who they got their influence from?
It was 1974, I was 14, lived across the street from SUNY, Stony brook campus. We were hangin in our fort in the woods by the highway, drinking shmits beer.we heard off in distance, pounding drums, over the tree line we saw the lights from football field, with smoke rising..we rode our bikes to the edge of field, left them, joined in the crowd of older kids...it was the dead..our minds/lives changed forever that night.Bob Marley was on bill too....we have never been the same..thank you god
the bus came by
Joseph Caldwell that’s when it all began
Beautiful my brother...
I would have been 17 and a senior. But you saw Marley too????!!!! Man that was something!!! 👍💙😍

Wow! My birthday…..this has sure been my life’s anthem!

Beautiful Groove they created. Great musicians.

Yeah man. That’s really cool. I’ve tried to get my 19 and 21 year old daughters to appreciate The Band, Dylan and The Dead. No go so far.

You say that like it's a bad thing?
The song, like the road, goes ever on.

The Grateful Dead put me to sleep.
Shutting Donna's mic off for this one would have been a solid move
Could not agree more

Bonnie Bramblett impression?
LOL Yep.
I've always heard Missoula was a pretty hip town for some reason. Acid-head cowboys/girls?

Gucci mane listens to the dead
Dog bark at 2:49 ?
Cracks that’s Phil’s bass barking.
They never played any of their songs the same way twice :P Hahaha
shouldn't that go with a going down the road feeling bad?
