    Last fall I purchased Rosie Beach Party Lilac from Springhill nursery online. It's rated zone 4-10. I'm in southern ca. It's starting to bud up , so wish me luck with this one. Can't say about fragrance yet. But yes lilacs are soo soo pretty.

    I've been growing a lilac for 30 yrs now in Atlanta, a Buffalo native who won't give up on that smell. A favorite childhood memory, also. It has gone from a 10 ft. bush full of powdery mildew, to a sprout living in a pot, and last year I planted it out in the ground again. If you propagate it, Brie, we will come to buy it!!

      oy yes that sound about right! I actually have a few plants from last year that I just potted up last night! And I just loaded the spring open house details, so I will add that link to the description above but here it is: www.briegrows.com/spring-open-garden-tour

      Yay! Southern yooper here and in Marietta, GA so this gives me hope. I purchased a Grape Hyacinth and it actually has a lilac smell! It's more faint than what we're used to; smelling lilacs a mile away but it was a pleasant surprise since these are new to my garden.

    I have an Excel in my garden southeast of Raleigh and it does well. I was told to plant it with afternoon shade, which is what I did. It gets sun all morning and then shade from about noon until the end of the day, when it may get an hour towards sunset.

      Yes excel is great. Mine doesn’t look like it will bloom this year but has a lot of healthy foliage.

    Y'all might want to try 'Bloomerang' lilac from Proven Winners. I am in zone 8 (barely) and the two I planted about three years ago have been doing great. They're now about 5' x 5'. The bloom clusters are a lot smaller than the ones on Brie's plants, but they smell great. And they rebloom some during the summer.

    I’m in 7b and my house came with a border of 6 lilacs around the porch; I think they are bloomerangs because they bloom in May and September. They are big and dense; we do top them off so they don’t block the porch. They don’t have the sweet lilac smell and they have smaller blooms but I’m happy with them. I’m trying to figure out what other plants I can add to the border to add color through the year.

    I have the same scent memory from growing up in PA. The scent wafting through my bedroom window. I have an angel white lilac that has done well here in fuquay Varina NC. I would be happy to give you some cuttings. The scent is lovely!

    There is an old variety of Lilac here is North Texas, not sure of the name, but definitely a Lilac. I grew up around Lilacs. The smell is wonderful!! The nurseries here try to sell Vitex/Chaste tree as the “Texas Lilac” but the older generation knows better. 😉 I was wondering if you may know what variety these are? Oh and planning on propagating this kind soon!!

    This is beautiful! I hope it makes it; please propagate it so you have more stock! Would we have to buy online since I’m guessing nurseries in Raleigh NC wouldn’t stock it? Also, do you suggest planting in a cool, northern side of the house?

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  3 года назад +1

      Yes I forgot to say WHERE to plant it! I will include that in my part two this week. But YES, I have all my lilacs on the north side of my house where they get morning sun and late afternoon shade. And since you are local you can get one from me! I just potted up a few that I propagated last year and I will have them during my open house on May 8 from noon-4pm. I will be posting more info about that on my website today.

    In my Northern California Zone 9 garden I planted a Syringa vulgaris 'Madame Lemoine' and it budded up and is coming back nicely. I don't know how well it will do going into the future because this is the first year that it's in the ground but I am hoping because our heat here isn't also paired with humidity that it will be fine.

    I need one of these in my life. Originally from VT and CT, I have missed lilacs for almost 30 years. Do you ever offer tips on where/how to purchase? I was at a town garden tour of your yard about 3 +/- years ago and live very nearby. You and your yard are amazing and thank you for the lessons!

    Sooooo.... I’m in zone 8a, just a few hours south of you here in upstate SC, and I just recently got a Baby Kim Lilac that I’m hoping to have next year (maybe a few blooms this year), but if I got this Excel variety would it do well? I’m a born and raised southern boy so as far as I’m concerned lilac may as well be from another planet, but I’d love to have one as mine is a fragrance garden.

    • @nuclearswan
      @nuclearswan 3 года назад

      I saw in the video that it’s really not for zones 8+, but I’m actually on a 7b/8a line, and can technically claim either, so that’s why I was asking. Thanks!

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  3 года назад +1

      Yes I think Excel, Lilac Sunday, and Declaration would be good for you and offer really great fragrance. Miss Kim is heat tolerant but the smalls is... well AWFUL compared to "real" lilacs ;)

    • @nuclearswan
      @nuclearswan 3 года назад

      @@BrieThePlantLady could you recommend a nursery that sells one of those varieties? I’d prefer the Excel that you show in the video as I’m really after that same lilac scent you’re referring to, but when I look online I can’t find a vendor. Thanks for your time!

    If you have never had it, you never miss it. Here in coastal NC, lilacs have never been on my radar. I don’t want to grow something that doesn’t thrive. Same reason I don’t attempt to grow...lupine, delphiniums cone to mind

    • @BrieThePlantLady
      @BrieThePlantLady  3 года назад

      Yeah that’s true. Abd costal Nc is warmer than inland so I wouldn’t recommend ANY of the plants you mentioned. But if you like delphinium you can grow larkspur very easily.

    People have been telling me “oh just get a lilac candle problem solved” and pretty much every lilac candle I smelled smells nothing like the real thing. By no means do they smell bad, they just don’t smell like what they say they do.
