Because of this method the price of aluminium fell from around 1000 dollars ( it was more expensive than gold back in the days) to less than 5 dollars per kg. Aluminum is abundant on earth, but is mainly found in alloy form. So it's expensive to extract aluminum. The hall heroult method has made aluminium easier and cheaper to extract.

Actually the O2 released do not get released from anode but instead it reacts with carbon present at the top and CO2 is released to prevent oxidation of anode to increase life of plant
