Epic Freediving with huge Mantas - dream or otherworldly reality!

In the early year of 2024 my wife Lara and I took the long trip to Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Our first stop was the homestay of Nick and his family: Meos Ambower. This place is the closest thing to an existing paradise on earth and in a week's stay we had countless incredible experiences, saw an unbelievable healthy and diverse animal and plant world and were able to capture this in hours of video footage. This trip to the manta rays was only 10 minutes away by a small boat. And after we could only spot one on the first day, which was moving so fast in milky water that I have rarely been so exhausted from snorkeling.
The next day: a group of 14 animals - most of them chevron mantas and a few black mantas. The oldest female (the animal in the thumbnail) had a wingspan of 4m - most of the others were younger and had a wingspan of 2.5m and a bit.
At the beginning of our encounter, the mantas, the most intelligent fish in the world, with the biggest brains and a demonstrable "knowledge of human nature", were still a little skeptical that I wasn't just swimming on the surface, as most tourists who have seen them do, and that I wasn't waiting at the bottom and letting bubbles rise, as most divers probably do.
I slowly and cautiously integrated myself into their group, always keeping my distance, never touching them and so I noticed a growing trust. one animal in particular whose tail was missing (perhaps just an accident with a boat or a shark attack) kept coming back to me and also to Lara and eyed us very curiously.
During one of its loops through a swarm of plankton, it was really only centimeters away from my hand and the camera in my hand.
We will never forget this day and with it these unworldly footage of these incredible creatures from another world.
Zu Beginn des Jahres 2024 unternahmen meine Frau Lara und ich eine lange Reise nach Raja Ampat in Indonesien. Unserer erster Halt war das homestay von Nick und seiner Familie: Meos Ambower. Dieser Ort kommt einem existierenden Paradies auf Erden am nächsten und in einer Woche Aufenthalt haben wir unzählige unfassbare Erlebnisse erlebt, eine unfassbar gesunde und vielfältige Tier und Pflanzenwelt gesehen und diese auch in Stunden von Videomaterial festhalten können. dieser Ausflug zu den Mantas war nur 10 Min mit einem kleinen Boot entfern. Und nachdem wir am ersten Tag nur einen einzigen ausmachen konnten, der in milchigem Wasser so schnell unterwegs war, dass ich selten so ausgepowert vom Schnorcheln war. Am nächsten Tag dann: eine Gruppe von 14 Tieren - die meisten Chevron-Mantas und einige Black Mantas. Das älteste Weibchen (das Tier von dem thumbnail) hatte eine Spannweite von 4m - die meisten anderen waren jünger und hatten eher eine Spannweite von 2,5m und mehr. Am Anfang unserer Begegnung waren die Mantas, die intelligentesten Fische der Welt, mit dem größten Gehirn und einer nachweislichen "Menschenkenntnis", noch ein wenig skeptisch darüber, dass ich nicht nur an der Oberfläche geschwommen bin, wie es die meisten Touristen, die sie gesehen haben machen. Und auch nicht am Grund wartetet und blasen aufsteigen ließ, wie sie wohl die meistern Taucher wahrnehmen.
Ich habe mich gewissermassen langsam und vorsichtig in ihre Gruppe eingegliedert, habe immer Abstand gehalten, sie niemals berührt und so bemerkte ich ein immer größer werdendes Vertrauen. insbesondere ein Tier dessen schwanz fehlte (vielleicht durch einen Unfall mit einem Boot oder aber einem Hai Angriff) kam immer wieder zu mir und auch zu Lara und beäugte uns sehr neugierig.
Bei einer seiner Loopings durch einen Planktonschwarm fehlten wirklich nur Zentimeter zu meiner Hand und in meiner Hand die Kamera.
wir werden diesen Tag niemals vergessen und ich liebe die Aufnahmen, die während dessen entstanden sind- Bilder für die Ewigkeit.
