This applies to any woodworking project, but is based on my successes with outdoor furniture and specifically; Adirondack Chairs. I cover the 5 essential steps to becoming successful at turning a profit doing this.
And in case you didn’t catch one of my earlier videos on the topic, Anyone who buys our plans and templates has our permission and blessing to build these projects and sell them for profit. This was the whole idea behind why we developed these in the first place.

Thank you for all you share! I've been very successful with your chairs as you know! Your chairs won me a national diy competition that bought me all new router bits and a few other things to aid in my chair production. And thanks for using my pics in this video! Made me feel awesome! I'm sharing this video on my woodworking page! Thanks again!
Thank you!
Your work is beautiful. And we really appreciate you sending photos! It was an honor to be able to show them off here!
Everyone, check out Jeff’s win with his beautiful work!
www.rayonier.com/diy-contest/winners/
@@KingsFineWoodworking it's an honor to be able to make them and tell people where I got the plans and templates!! I plan on making a hardwood version this year for myself!
@@quadsquadracingable, can’t wait to see that hardwood version!
@@quadsquadracingable Congrats on winning the competition! I like the cupholder modification! Think I'll try to work that in when I build mine. Also, you a Seahawks fan?! Looks like Blitz on your profile pic. GoHawks!
I made a few of these and threw a party. I now have six chairs on order. Buying the table plans soon and I expect they'll sell just as well. Thanks, James and family!
So how much are they to purchase? How much in materials?
It made me smile to see my chair on this video. I wasn't expecting that. I was like, "hey, that looks like my fire pit!" Then, "hey, wait... that IS MY FIRE PIT!!" Thanks James! I'm making some rockers next.
You did a beautiful job!
It's very kind of you to offer all these great tips for those who want to sell their adirondack chairs and other projects. You are a wealth of knowledge and skills!!!
Thank you. And thanks for watching.
Can i order plans for the Adirondack Rocken chair.
Thank you for being so kind to share your tips and videos. The first time I saw the thumbnail on RUclips of this adirondack chair I knew I wanted to make it. It's unique and stands out from mass produced chairs so much that I ended up buying the plans/templates for the chair, rocker, children's chair and outdoor table...lol.
I built my first rocker with my brother and it took us 10 hours over 2 days to finish it. I posted it to my facebook page and immediately got an order for 2 rockers for a friend that is building a new lake house. I built those 2 in about 15 hours combined over 3 days and think I have it down enough already to batch out 4 chairs in about 5 days total working just part time at night. I'm sure it will get faster the more I build.
My friend has since shared pictures of the new rockers on her new porch and I have some more folks asking about them!
This is exactly what I needed. Was driving to work and saw some expensive Adirondack chairs out and have been working on learning CNC router at my local makerspace. I think this is the answer. Thanks!
You the man James!! Great video and great content!
Thank you James for your willingness to share.
thanks James. and thanks to your Admins on the FB page.
Such a wealth of information. I'm looking to retire (again) in a couple years and I'm looking at taking my woodworking to the streets. Never can have too much income when retired, I'm told, so this would be an enjoyable way to make that happen. I love the chairs you build (and everything else~!), so I'll definitely be picking up a set of your plans.
Thanks for this video, James~!
Hey mr.king, just wanted to say I really love you videos. I've always said a mark of a true professional is when he doesn't try to hide his little trade secrets any more and I think your head and toes above other RUclips wood workers in that regard...
You are very kind. Thank you.
Thank you James! I finally got time to sit down and watch this video. I have the plans and templates for the Adirondack chair, just looking for the time to build one. Gained a lot of information and knowledge from this video. Hope there is more to come. Thanks again.
Love these types of videos. Offering your actual experience & ideas for free. That is just amazing. Thank you James. Your time & effort mixed with your obvious desire to help total strangers to succeed is very admirable & inspirational! Thanks again.
Wow gorgeous! I didn’t know there were so many different colored wood like that!
Really beautiful chairs, James! Thanks for all the tips! 😃
Another good idea is to make business cards with your info and a small but good picture of a chair. That way you can give it for those who buy your chairs, so they can give it for anyone interested. 😉
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I appreciate this type of video as well as your build videos. I've actually been building planet boxes to try and sell. However I've only got a small shop. And not a lot of room to store anything the size of an Adirondack chair. However one of these days that's what I'd like to build and sell. Thanks for all the great content James and and family.
I’d really like to see a counter or bar height chair to use on a porch and see over the railing.
James. I would love to see how you make a two seater. Those look beautiful.
Thanks James very helpful. I always enjoy your videos and your teaching method.
James thank you for doing this video, it really helped me get an idea of where I need to go on building my first chair. I’m looking forward to sending you a picture of the first chair I build. I received your templates and am excited about building. Thank you for your encouragement and all your videos. Scott
I've seen this kind of product at high end nurseries and garden centers too. That kind of attention for your product could explode demand as well.
love your work and your channel its so natural and work based its refreshing to see a fellow woodworker and youtuber just letting the work be the focus
I'll never understand why you offer such brilliant information for free, but I'm eternally grateful for your videos! They have helped me move closer to being my own boss. Your type of generosity is unfortunately rare these days, but thank you from my heart! Bless you!
Thank you. You’re very kind.
Thanks for the info on your chairs. Just viewed your ep. 123, and I thought the advice and resources was great! The video is really helpful.
Thank you. I wouldn't mind seeing some more outdoor furniture.
James I loved the video and loved seeing a few of my chairs in it. Thanks for all you do for us woodworkers we appreciate it!
Thank you for sharing your pictures! Your work is very nice! I was happy to display it!
You've put a lot of thought into this, well done!
Hi James.
As always you explain all the finer details of your work.
It's so inspiring to everyone who watches your channel.
I have a full set of chair plans but have not had the time to get started on them just yet.
I look forward to seeing your next release of videos.
Keep other great work with your family.
Thank you. You’re very kind
James, I love your videos, your format, and your knowledge. I would love to see more of the business side of it as I'm jumping into my own side business--charcuterie boards and custom dining tables.
I built your dovetail spline jig a few years ago and it has seen a LOT of use!
Thanks for sharing have a blessed day
Yes. More of this content is welcomed.
Love this type of video James! So good.
great information! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Great video, I would like to see more videos like this.
James I always appreciate when you make a new video! You explain things very well I got my plans but haven’t had a chance to build any yet I can’t wait to get started!
Great job with very good content. Thanks
Excellent high quality video... I enjoy your style, and your craftsmanship! Thank you.
Sorry I asked for before, the guy that sells mdf templates for chair. And very good information on marketing. About 40 miles away is the most per capital income.
Would love to see more like this, thank you very much!
It’s pretty funny the example you used of the chair photos you took at a $500k home. You mentioned the home was really nice. I live in Southern California and you can’t find a home for less than maybe $800k, but typically you’re going to have to pay in excess of one million to get a house here. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to make this video and helping us to try to be more successful.
I should have been more clear on that. Back in the early '90's in Denver, $500K. bought an 8000 sq ft three story home with a 4 car garage on an acre of land in a gated community. And the homeowners were in the upper middle class.
Today my 60 year old tiny ranch house is worth $400,000. because Denver's housing market has gone insane.
I think the equivalent home today to what I was talking about then, probably goes for $1.5 - $2 Million in Denver.
Thank you for all this great info. I would enjoy more of this type of videos on other projects too
Very good and interesting video. In the next one can you cover pricing? Yes i know it is going to depend on location, your local price for wood and all of that. But a ballpark as to how you and others are arriving to your sales price would be helpful.
Your plans just resulted in what we believe to be $2,500 in raffle tickets for my dad’s coworker recently diagnosed with guillan-barre syndrome. We put your design recognition on the raffle tickets, but my family said they are selling out in days. I just wanted to say thanks, and I wish you nothing but the best moving forward
Thanks for watching and commenting. I hope your dad's coworker is doing ok.
Very useful information! I wonder if you could recommend an appropriate amount or percentage for a 'kickback' to people who help sell the chairs. I love your channel and I've gained so many useful tips from you. And I love how you make your projects with your daughters. I made my first cutting board with my daughter and it's still my favorite project!
Thank you thank you thank you.
Great suggestions. Thx for sharing those ideas
Yes! I would be interested in learning more from you about about business development.
This video really inspired me
Lots of good insights! Thanks!
Just beautiful work
Thank you very much!
I love all the personal details you shared about your sales and marketing process. Thank you!
Hi Jason! Thank you.
Great suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to share this info.
Love these inspirational types of videos James. I haven't made one of these yet but I'm sure if I did I could sell it. Keep on! Brother Riv
Great video as always, and very interesting in you boring me with the details especially pricing!! Keep up the outstanding work.
Absolutely love this type of videos great information
Thanks for the video very helpful I think. I just starting out and have started to do my first project for myself, but would like to possibly go full time. Building my workstation with drawers and everything for my 3d printer's already made 3 mistakes only one was bad. The other 2 you won't ever notice as it's ether hidden underneath or by the drawers.
The bad mistake though is I messed up on the dimensions for all the side boards they was supposed to be full length -1/4. I made them the board dimensions of the lower support frame instead which is 1-1/2 difference so I just going to have a bit shorter bench. It's not that bad now I have room behind it to feed cords instead of being dead flat.🤭 You won't ever notice it as long as it's against a wall. Once I put the legs on and table top it won't be noticable anyhow other then from behind.
Looks good so far even if it's just a frame, but already stained it and put a clear coat on it which took longer to do then I thought. Staining takes awhile to get everything ready + hours of time just putting on stain/clear coats.
I would like the planes
Excellent video. I'm now starting to see the cascading sales. It does take time, so be persistent.
Great video. Though, I laughed out loud at the chair photo at 11:46 . It's a beautiful chair in front of a fire pit where they are burning either scraps from the build or a chair that didn't work out well. LoL! (it's scraps). Thank you for all the information in the video and it's all true. Big Thumbs Up!
Thank you for makings video. It was very inspiring. I will be ordering you plans and making this chair for sale, thank you.
Thanks for the great information. I like your ideas about how and where to sell these beautiful chairs.
I will let you know how this works here in North Georgia..
thank you you are awesome i have your plans i want to try and sell chairs and you really help thank you James
Thank you! You’re very kind. Good luck selling!
Awesome as always my friend.
Thanks Mike! ❤️👍🏻
For what it's worth, I am in the demographic James talks about. Yes, I give him a very, very, small donation on Patreon I don't think matters that much to him, but I am also not a wood worker and just dream of it in retirement. I dream of having a shop like James but will likely only have consumer grade equivalents. But what he is saying is spot on. In the rush to mass market globalism, we missed lots of super very valuable things. My house costs well over 100x this piece of furniture mass market availability, but at the same time I can't afford to tear down my entire house just to build it completely custom with a designers and architects aplenty. That is a completely different tax bracket.
We are a lot closer to wood workers than you think, just make our money in a different discipline but respect the highly skilled craftsman wherever. A skilled woodworker producing awesome results are my equals of another craft. Don't sell yourself short. But, yes, I bought his plans and want to make them for myself. I think there is a human mental health gain from just making things you can touch and see. Make something just because it makes you happy.
Hi James. I just wanted to thank you for your excellent videos. You are truly an artist and you have a talent for teaching your craft. I'm just getting started with woodworking and have made a few basic patio pieces, but you have definitely inspired me to think bigger and possibly get good enough to supplement my retirement. Thank you again and please let me know how to go about getting a set of templates for this BEAUTIFUL chair.
Hi Frank!
Thank you. You are very kind.
Here is the link to the plans for it. These are essential. kingsfinewoodworking.com/collections/project-plans-for-sale/products/adirondack-chair-new-comfort-design-3-d-plans
After the plans, this is optional. These full size paper templates are for all the curved parts! This makes it even easier. kingsfinewoodworking.com/collections/project-plans-for-sale/products/templates-for-adirondack-chair
@@KingsFineWoodworking Awesome and thanks again for everything James. I posted a comment last night as my wife was yelling at me because I was watching your video for the 10th time. My comment basically said you are like the Yoda of woodworking, but I think it got removed for community standards for some reason. They must not be Star Wars fans!
@@FrankiePastore 😊🤣🤣
Great video and content, thanks
Subbed
Hope all is good haven’t seen a video in awhile take care
I love these chairs and want to get the templates. I'm disabled and this is something I feel I can do.
Made the thumbnail! I’ll have to thank my sister-in-law for the nice photos.
I am curious what kind of wording you use in your Facebook adds.
Hi Rhett! Beautifully done photographic display of the pair! Uncluttered, and an amazing background to showcase your work, which by the way, is just as stunning as the photography! Thank you for sharing your picture in the community!
The wording I use is a little presumptuous. But mild hyperbole is often necessary to compete in any marketplace. So I’d say something like this:
Expert woodworker - offering custom Adirondack chairs. Unique new anatomical design for extreme comfort. Wood species, finishes and engraving tailored to your preferences. Package pricing for 3 or more.
i like that you say "build one for yourself, then build one for a friend too" ...thats what i did and id like to expand on that, i was hoping youd mention it but i dont think you did.....
when you build one for a friend or family member, build a couple, sometimes theyll want to pay you for them but i tell them no, instead, now i have "free" advertising....if their friends ask about them theyll send them my way
My first try using the template and pine was a success - not sure how to share the image here. Thanks for the tips on selling.
how many people use regular lumber pine , the other lumber is very expensive right now , and if so what do you recommend for staining
Hay hay missing you guys! When is the next video??
Very Nike 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for watching!
Really nice and inspiring. I love your work as well as the photos from others. That has to be really satisfying to see others using your design. Question: Roughly how much material goes into one chair?
I have a quick question? I have a line on 2 inch poplar. And 1 1/2 inch oak. What are your thoughts on using either for the Adirondack chairs.
What router bit do you recommend for making these chairs?
I definitely want to start doing these chairs, can I reach out to you
Hey boss, love your videos and have learned a lot from you. I actually am planning on making a couple sets of your adirondack chairs for my house and gifting some to family as you recommended!
Question for you... I'm an amateur with beginner tools that I am upgrading at the moment. I'm wondering if you have any recommendations as far as brands/models of: Table Saw, Band Saw, Miter Saw. I'm not looking to buy professional $6000 sets as it'll be a garage based "weekend warrior" setup for a while but I definitely want to start delving more into this as I've found I truly enjoy woodworking and can see a future in it.
What is the recommended price you'd sell these for?
Can you make these out of 2x4?
Thanks for the video James, Do you offer plans to make the chairs a little bit smaller?
How much do these chairs generally sell for?
Most people just don't realize how much time goes into these products. I've had people say they can make it cheaper, my response is yes you can make it cheaper, but can YOU make it? Usually the wife is shaking her head no. 😊
Hello James, I have sold quite a few of your chairs. Thank you for that. With some orders backing up. What is the acceptable moisture level for redwood. It’s hard to find redwood that is under 10%. The 2x12 are around 14 to 17%. I put the back pieces on all the chairs to prevent racking. I’m just worried if I cut the back pieces they will warp. Thanks again and love all the plans I have bought.
Thanks for this super-informative video. Thumbs up!
I really do like videos about how to make money with woodworking. Adirondack chairs are not really a thing in The Netherlands as far as I know, do you have any information about how these chairs would sell in the Netherlands?
What do I put on my chairs they will be for outdoor use do I put stain or some kind of Clair coat
This is what I use. It’s awesome!
amzn.to/3JT5zO3
Are the regular chair and the rocking chair the same except for the rocker at the bottom?
How do you determine the prices for you chairs?
These chairs are awesome. Have you considered making a glider base instead of the rocker? I'm a big guy and the rockers seem to have a way of "walking" on me.
Hi Rob,
I could look into a glider base. But I can assure you these won’t walk on you.
I’m 6’2”, and I weigh 475 pounds. (We also tested these to hold over 1000 pounds)
So unless you are substantially bigger than me, I can’t see it walking.
@@KingsFineWoodworking Thank you for the response. I've bought the plans but have yet to make them.
Fantastic video. One of your most informative. A general question for you or anyone else that sells these. What price do you sell them for? I do a lot of cutting boards and marine woodworking and this seems like a very easy build to add to that. Thank you in advance.
James, I’m about halfway done with the rocker plans I bought from you a few months ago. 2 questions, do you offer for purchase the templates made from mdf? And do you have a recommended finish for chairs left in the weather? Many thanks and I really enjoy your vids. Dave B
Hi! You can get the wooden templates here.
mkdesignscolorado.com/collections/plans-and-templates
And I like to use Penofin for the finish. My favorite one is Transparent Redwood
That was great. You see seem to have made these chairs in different species of wood. So would you consider an "average" materials and labor cost for the different species ?
Thank you
Hi do you post the chair plans to the UK ?
If yes what’s the shipping price?
Thank you Regards Steve
Hi!
Yes, we sure do.
The shipping price varies quite a bit depending on where there, and I don’t have a way to check it. But if you’re curious you can put it in the cart, and enter your address as if you’re going to check out. Then before you enter payment info, it will give you shipping choices & prices.
If it’s more than you want to spend, no problem. You don’t have to check out.
We also see each of our templates in full size full scale pdf documents. This way the shipping is zero. And you can have them printed at a print shop or office supply there.
Thanks!
Thanks for the chairs and insight James. Very motivational. How do you get clients for other products you make?
How do I get the plans for chairs
How can I got wooden templates and how much
We haven't seen a new video in months I hope everything is OK. Please let us know
Hi James, I live in Southern California and redwood is readily available.
What would be an acceptable moisture content or how to properly let the wood dry out? That would be a great video, or any advice? Btw, I did buy plans and templates. Thanks in advance!
