Russia could handle this differently but they are consistently trying to preserve the lives of Ukraine citizens
Russia has held back 2/3rds of their total army and most of their more advanced military equipment. Like NATO, they opted to use up their dated equipment and use kid gloves against a much weaker opponent, viewing this as a civil war rather than an enemy state. After a year of this and growing sentiments by Russians that NATO is trying to turn the SMO into a forever war, Shoigu has ramped up the use of heavier and more modern weapons.

Their nuclear capabilities are 2x that of NATO with updated and fully functioning launchers. After 2 years the Russians have achieved both and are now going to push the UAF far enough back to establish a DMZ.
