This might save LOTS of time: "First off, if you suspect your charging port is going bad, it probably isn't. Grab a flashlight and a safety pin/needle, shine the light into the charging port and you will probably see a bunch of lint tightly jammed into the back of the port that is preventing the cable from fully inserting. In my case, it was about 3 years worth of lint that got compressed tighter into the port every time i plugged in my charge cable. Just turn your phone off (I don't know if crossing the pins will hurt your phone, but it's better to be safe than sorry.) and use the needle to gently fish the lint out of the port and your phone will probably work as good as new. I looked into my old port before replacing it and it looked clear, but I didn't shine a light into it. I spent about an hour swapping out the parts, sweating bullets the entire time, when I could have just cleaned the port out in 10 seconds. Literally 2 minutes after completing the repair, I looked into the old port again, saw the lint, and felt really dumb." (Info from DullJack on amazon page for OEM Apple iPhone 5 Charging Port Replacement Part for Repairs & Fixes-Color Black)
P Gorman Somehow I consider myself somewhat techy, yet this was the exact solution!!! I physically removed at least 1mm of compressed lint. I now see that the chargers go fully into my port as apposed to before removing the lint (this should have been an obvious sign but yet I still had no idea). ALSO another lint related issue that you helped me realize... siri and facetiming the mic would work 5% of the time and i removed lint from the mic between the camera and flash (iPhone5) Thank you :)
I too had an issue with lint and my charging port. I'm glad I read your comment. I was able to clean boatloads of lint off my one year old iPhone 5s. Thank you thank you!
P Gorman It really works! And truly there's ton of lint in that port. After 10 mins cleaning, it works as a new one! I was this close to pay 50 dollars to change a new port. Thank you.
If you're having charging problems--particularly if you have to wiggle the cable a bit for the phone to begin charging: first, try a different cable. If the problem persists, then take a toothpick and clean out your charging port. What happens is that lint piles up at the end of the port, and the cable can no longer fully slide in. Remove the lint and see if it improves. If not, then you might want to consider replacing the entire port.
Hey JerryRig, I was having trouble with my iPhone 5s charging. I always had to wiggle and prop up the cord to get it to charge. I checked out your video and some comments. After reading the comments about the build-up of lint in the charging port and your comment that a wooden toothpick works, I tried it. I took a round toothpick and flattened it with pliers so that it would fit all the way into the port. I pulled out a whole lot of lint! After I removed the lint, my phone is charging. The cord went further into the charging port and I didn't need any wiggling of the charger cord to get it to charge. Thanks for the video and the advice in the comments!
Just an FYI for anyone attempting iphone 5s repairs....This is a really excellent tutorial! I just want to point out one thing. It is very very important that the four screws that go into the metal plate over the LCD go back into the exact holes that they came out of. They are 4 different sizes, and you can damage your logic board if you put them back incorrectly.
Dan Witting it will crack the MoBo and your phone won't work unless somebody solders the leads in the board back. It may look like two, but I believe it is 3, and best practice is to keep track of which one goes where.
My iPhone is just out of surgery, per your video. Patient is stable, charging, and all bodily functions/buttons seem to be working properly. Couldn't have done it without your video. THANK YOU!!
very clear and quick instructions, all other clips i have seen the guy usually just prattles on and on and on, good video clip dude, no nonsense and straight to the point. 1st Class
i owe you a thank you! My port was just not grabbing the cable anymore, I guess too many plugs and unplugs and even when the cable was shoved all the way in there, it would randomly stop charging. After reading some of these other comments, maybe I had a bunch of dust in there idk. HOWEVER, i got the replacement piece and followed your instructions and it works great. Thanks very much!
Thanks so much, man. I followed this to the letter, and it worked perfectly. This video allowed me to continue using my 5s until the 6s or 7 or whatever they end up calling it comes out later this year. All for around $20. Really appreciate your work!
You rock! Other searches for this turned up an iPhone 5 but not the 5s. It was very frustrating. This made the repair very easy. Thank you very much for this video.
i experienced this 'can't be charged things" and etc. But at that time after watching this actually very useful video i still doubt that the problem is in my quite new charger cable that ive just bought in less than 6 months. So before i started doing this thing and another thing, i used an optical spray (the one that you usually uses to clean your glasses that says FOR ANTI-REFLECTIVE GLASS OR PLASTIC LENSES) a pinset, and a small piece of cloth simply to clean the inner side of both sides on that cable. And after i had cleaned the inner side of both of them, i found it the piece of cloth that im using to be dark in colour (so i supposed its dusty and not very clean inside on both of the inner sides). Fortunately after doing this, i was able to charge my phone. Hope this lil tip will help you.
Thank you for taking the time to show me the process. So far two repairs done from your videos. I feel like a phone tech. Lol. And the parts you recommend from repair universe I believe we're dead on. Thanks. Again.
hey, i did the swap, worked great, thanks for the tutorial. Two things, after getting the thing up and running, my screen no longer automatically rotates into landscape mode when holding it sideways for videos or whatever. Have you ever encountered this before, do you think a plug could have been left unplugged? Secondly, it turned out my headphone jack still didnt work after the swap, do you think this is a motherboard issue then?
You are a Star Jerry, thanks very much. My biggest problem was reconnecting the ribbon cable connector's, probally my fingers are a little too big and that I was overcareful and scared to damage the connector if not properly aligned .... fyi, the new OEM charging port connector was supplied with colored plastic foil on several places which needs peeling away to expose the pre fixed glue on the new unit. Thanks again Jerry
Thank you so much for this video! I just finished replacing my charging port. Idk how to thank you enough for this video. I'm glad i bought the tools along with the part. It took me longer than 5 mins since this was my first time opening any phone to this extent. I did however, have to buy double sided sticky tape, the thin foam kind one, since the new part didnt come with one of the thingamajigger and had to transport over some parts as per your video. But again, THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!
Hi man! Thanks sooo much for this tutorial, the jack in my phone was kinda "eroded" because I´ve been using a generic cable (I guess that the plug of the cable is thicker than the original), and it was really hard to get it charged. Thanks to your video, I bought a 14 € spare part and a tool set (12 €) and changed it exactly as you explained. The thing works perfectly now!!! cheers!!!
Great video! I was able to renew an old phone that is in mint condition, and still worth money . To all the people that said it’s too technical: maybe just stick to hitting the little letter thingies and make comments that make yourselves look like you have below-average intelligence
i did this, and it worked great! i got all of my parts and tools from jerry's links posted here. it got a little hairy at times. removing the battery was a sketchy (bc i also changed the battery while i had the thing apart.) i had to pry it out with extreme prejudice. and the metal clip he warns you about in the last step was a bit tricky, but it was kinda fun.
My replacement worked fine; thanks. The bracket that holds on the Home-Button connector was a little tricky, I had to un-stick it from the old charging port assy and fit it into place but it only goes one way so it was easy enough once I figured out that I needed it. I got lucky and tried my phone before I seated the screen; lo and behold, I got stripes on the wallpaper and no swipe function. It turns out it took me three tries to get the top edge of the ribbon connector closest to the top center to connect. I could test it by hitting the on button on the top of the phone so I knew when I got it to connect. I tested it after each screw of those four that hold the plate down. Once the plate is down, it'll stay. Then back to the Home Button latch (like he says; tricky) and fasten the screen. I put in a new battery while I had it apart so once it was charged 5%, I could do the testing stuff I listed above. Thanks; It's a good phone again now.
Hey Jerry i reach the point where you completely dismantled it and I’m putting in the new part, however I’ve noticed one of the components isn’t on the new part and it’s that little piece on the top which is connected to a ribbon. I have removed the bracket off the old component are you supposed to superglue that on to the new component?
Thanks for the video, before doing this, I decided to check that the port was clean... dust built up over time and simple cleaning it out can save any problems (such as breaking the screen) Thanks again , I was preparing to repair one and luckily didn't have to follow the video!
45 minutes and everything works. Success. And saved me cost of replacing a new iPhone. Hardest part by far was that teeny tiny power cable connector. Holy crap that took up half the time. I need a damn magnifying glass and a good light next time.
i know Im asking randomly but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot the login password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Superb video! Thanks very much. Just fixed my phone. It's fiddly - particularly that clippy thing - but worth the effort! Thanks for brilliant tutorial!
Great video,, wouldn't of done it without the help of your video, it's very easy to follow,,, my tip when installing the last ribbon and clip on bracket, place a pencil flat across between the screen and the bottom part and slide it back, this will hold the screen and will allow you to use both hands and focus more on snapping the last ribbon & bracket…..Great Video you saved me a lot of money…. Gracias!
Connection to charge all good anything else to connecting port is intermittent like headphones , lighting cables which all work well on other people’s phones, cleaned out the port . Any thoughts of what to do ?
Purchased recommended parts. What a steal for the smartphone repair kit! Studied this well made video and performed the repair EXACTLY as described. Thank you so much Jerry! Took my phone from brick to like new for 23 bucks. God bless you!
I’ve had problem charging phone for months. I used a toothpick to clean the dust out the port today (quite clogged up) and it charges perfectly now. Try this first before attempting replacement, could save you a few quid.
wow, thanks so much for this video. Now I know that repairing my old iphone 5 is WAY out of my realm of technical ability. I'd gladly pay someone 50 bucks to do it, if the phone was still usable, but I'm pretty sure that no carrier still supports it so it's just an ibrick now. I'll miss those photos.
Hey Jerry! In case I do all this steps, will I lose all the information in my Iphone? I just can´t turn it on because the port is damaged and I´m afraid of losing everything.
wowwwwwwww................. Fantastic Class...... I follow the instructions and make it by my self. and it was mind blowing working. Thank You so much Mr. JerryRig....... Now Please upload the Video for...( Iphone not turning on with pressing power and home button together.) Thank You so much
hey man thank you i used to work on iphones 4's and 4s's and this will be my first on the iphones 5's and 5s's ill let you know how it goes after i purchase the part disassemble and reassemble
Lint! My port was jammed with lint! I used a tiny pin to clean out the port and now it's charging like a champ. I sure am glad that I didn't have to install, or have installed, a new charging port.
I got a couple of iPhone 5S, an iPhone 4S and two Nexus 6's to play with. Some cracked screens, not-working charging ports, dead batteries or bent. Haven't ever opened up a phone before, but I like tinkering with technology. Lets hope I can fix some of them to use as spare phones or music player.
Jerry ! I have a problem on a 5s. the only way to charge the phone is while its OFF. then I can turn the phone on and use it. But it still is an issue having to charge that way and cannot get sync with itunes either. would you think by changing the charging port will it solve my problem ??
I recently replaced the lightning connector for the iPhone 5s. When finished with the repair I tested the lightning port. When plugging in the lightning cable the phone awakens and indicates that it is receiving a charge, however the battery does not charge at all. Do you think this is user error or faulty part?
Hello! Thx for this video!!! I fix my phone! I have a question... my screen start white white stripes... have you any ideas what it can be? Something I can easy fix or I the screen bad now for ever?! It started after I fix whit this video
He did a great job on the step-by-step instructions, except for one part. First, he unconnected the display before unhooking the battery, which is a huge NO NO!!! After you get into the phone from the screen, you ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS unhook the battery before taking anything apart. If you refuse to do so, it could short out the display, motherbaord, or connectors!!!! I have seen this many many many times with people just taking things apart and disconnecting parts from the connectors without unhooking the battery first! Other than that one little mistake, he did a great job on step-by-step!
chriskila The bracket that you have to unscrew to get into the charge port has the battery connector in with it. It is next to the charge port connector, you unhook it just like the charge port, screen and front camera.
chriskila You are welcome! Just make sure that battery is away from the connector because it can short out the motherboard even if it touches the connector just a tad.
So i installed the new , but i did not fit all the screws in it. Will it be ok if i dont screw some in? Or will that mess up my iphone? Thanks for the help
OMG thanks so much for this comment, i thought my charging port was damaged then i read about removing lint with a toothpick which wasn't really effective but then i tried this and my phone started charging!
Mr. Jerry, I just saw your others video related to an iphone 5. My question is: I saw that in the replacement video of the battery/screen of an iphone 5 there was no ribbon connector attach to the botton, just as it did in this video. Could it be that it's only attach in the iphone 5s and not in the case of an iphone 5?
Since nobody responded, the answer is yes. The iphone 5s have a ribbon connected to the touch id. And sometimes when you replace the screen or battery it will screw up the touch id.
Hey man, Do you think that replacing the charging port can make the touch id useless? I replaced the charging port and now it says cant set up the touch id , homebutton works fine.
This repair does replace part of the circuitry that connects to the home button and touch ID sensor. If the ribbon cable from the touch ID sensor isn't fully connected, or if any of the ribbon cables were damaged the touch ID won't work. Unless you really crimped the ribbon or ripped it my first guess would be that the ribbon cable isn't plugged in fully.
Thanks, this was a good video! however when you were talking about any grounding clips that would need to be taken off, and swapped over//it would have been good to go into that a bit more, there was a grounding clip that holds the door for that pesky connector that I had to move over and there was no adhesive on it, other than that great video!! Thank you! Now I can charge like a civilized person and not a normal person.
Just an FYI for everyone: if you are still able to get your phone to charge, albeit only by holding the charge cable in just the right position, you may simply have particulate build up in your charge port. I decided not to try these (very well presented) instructions on my own, and the repair guy I took my phone to dug out lint, etc,. from my phone's charge port with a tool. It charges perfectly now.
Hi do you know where to buy both the port and tool together! I just want to be sure that the reason why my phone is not working since its not charging properly. It took one whole day for it to charge to 21% and then it died rapidly. Also the phone is disable since the phone was given to me.
Jerry , i see in this video you did not remove the logic board to do this fix of the Charging Port.....we dont need to remove it ? ...in other videos about this fix , they do remove the logic board, so please let us know . I have to do this work but i will like to get opinion on on this. Thanks in advance. Daniel Gomez
Hey there, great video! I recently bought a 5s on ebay that said it wouldn't charge assuming that the charge port or the battery were screwed up and that with an hour or two of work I could have a working 5s at a discount. I replaced the battery with one from an iphone 5s that I know worked and charged perfectly with only 88 charge cycles, and I replaced the charge port with the one from the other working iphone, and with a new charging port that I bought online. Neither of these things fixed the phone, and it still states "This accessory or cable is not certified and may not work right" blah blah blah. It does this with the brand new Apple brand $30 cable that I just bought from best buy, and my friends cable, however when I use an old fraying cable that came with the phone, it works perfectly, do you know what might cause this?
Please about advice. My iphone after connection of charger shows flash at charger indicator but the percentages does not increase. If I connect the phone to PC so data transfer is OK but the battery doesn't charge. Can I replace the charger port or the issue is some different (motherboard)? thank you for your advice.
You're not the only one, mine was somewhat different (it is 5S) but it did not have this latch over the cable connection to the home button or the bottom of the screen. I replaced the screen same time as the charging port, the screen worked, swipe (digitiser) but the home button in the new screeb worked exactly once then the operating system said can not use touch ID on this unit and nothing on the lover part worked, the charging nor the loudspeaker, I may have bricked something with the hammer ;)
I replaced the charging port and put a new battery in. Worked great for like 2 weeks. Then battery went to 0. And could not charge after that. Any thoughts?
Thank you this was so helpful! Now my phone can actually charge. However, I have a major problem. So, my iPhone was at 1% before I turned off to do the thing, and it took around a week to get all of the things I needed, so the phone must have died while it was off. After I fixed it, plugged it in, all was fine, but now I have the white apple screen of death. I'm wondering if I did something wrong, or didn't plug something in right. Is there anything I could have done that wouldn't allow it to turn on? Or was it just a coincidence? Please help, I would appreciate it so much! Thanks!
Ok, so I took it to the Apple Store, and I found out that I only barely plugged in the screen, so it got some connection, but not as much as it needs. Please remember to be very careful when plugging in the screen. Unfortunately, I found another problem. My headphone jack is not working very well, and I don't think I got it in very snug, so I'm going to have to fix that.
This might save LOTS of time:

Also, others have noted that using a toothpick (instead of a needle) has worked for them.

It is very very important that the four screws that go into the metal plate over the LCD go back into the exact holes that they came out of. They are 4 different sizes, and you can damage your logic board if you put them back incorrectly.
Angie Person Very good tip. Thanks for mentioning it.
I hate seeing destroyed logic boards JerryRigEverything. Really great walk through.
JerryRigEverything what happens if you put them in the wrong way. They look like only two different types. Not 4. That would have been good to ckarify
Dan Witting it will crack the MoBo and your phone won't work unless somebody solders the leads in the board back. It may look like two, but I believe it is 3, and best practice is to keep track of which one goes where.
Angie Person how do you know which screws go back where? Mine got jumbled during the rework. I figured these four screws were the same
This is the best advice I have found yet on the Internet. Thank you !
My iPhone is just out of surgery, per your video. Patient is stable, charging, and all bodily functions/buttons seem to be working properly. Couldn't have done it without your video. THANK YOU!!

Thank you for taking the time to show me the process. So far two repairs done from your videos. I feel like a phone tech. Lol. And the parts you recommend from repair universe I believe we're dead on. Thanks. Again.

I just followed your instructions, and they worked like a charm. Thank you for the video.
Great video! I am about to attempt replacing my charging port. I wanted to point out that you didn't include tweezers in your tools/parts description!
Just did this successfully thanks to your videos Jerry!

Great tutorial! I'm having to change the port in my son's phone. My front camera lense in broken, do you have any tutorials on that?
i tried it once

tried it again with the noise
and worked xDDDDD
omg totally lov u

Superb video! Thanks very much. Just fixed my phone. It's fiddly - particularly that clippy thing - but worth the effort! Thanks for brilliant tutorial!

Try this first before attempting replacement, could save you a few quid.
helped me fix my phone and saved me time, frustration, and money! thanks a bunch man!
This repair worked for me, but definitely was not easy. Took me 3 hours and some extra ingenuity.
wow, thanks so much for this video.
Thanks P Gorman !! Just did the flashlight and needle trick and tadaaaaaa....all good !!
Hi Jerry is this where the antenna is too?
I got a couple of iPhone 5S, an iPhone 4S and two Nexus 6's to play with. Some cracked screens, not-working charging ports, dead batteries or bent. Haven't ever opened up a phone before, but I like tinkering with technology. Lets hope I can fix some of them to use as spare phones or music player.
Thanks for the help. Saved me a few dollars and I got to so the inside of my phone.
P.S. Unconnect is not an English word. Disconnect works better.
Jerry !
I have a problem on a 5s.
the only way to charge the phone is while its OFF. then I can turn the phone on and use it.
But it still is an issue having to charge that way and cannot get sync with itunes either.
would you think by changing the charging port will it solve my problem ??
Great video. Just used it to swap out my charging port.
Other than that one little mistake, he did a great job on step-by-step!
and how do you unhook battery?
chriskila The bracket that you have to unscrew to get into the charge port has the battery connector in with it. It is next to the charge port connector, you unhook it just like the charge port, screen and front camera.
ok, thanks!
chriskila You are welcome! Just make sure that battery is away from the connector because it can short out the motherboard even if it touches the connector just a tad.
So i installed the new , but i did not fit all the screws in it. Will it be ok if i dont screw some in? Or will that mess up my iphone? Thanks for the help
Have a damp toothbrush and brush directly in to the port for a few minutes, I had an issue with the charging port for months but it's all good now
this worked for me! thanks! stupid Apple.
I love you
@@thecalvenator you cant blame apple for that
OMG thanks so much for this comment, i thought my charging port was damaged then i read about removing lint with a toothpick which wasn't really effective but then i tried this and my phone started charging!
I was thinking about getting a 5s with a janky charging port. Watched this video. Decided against it. Thanks for your service.
Thanks for helping me resurrect my iphone! Much appreciated the vids!
Do you think regular people can do this 😂😂
Corrine Stack omg ikr
but he literally shows you how, step-by-step
Has this guy heard of the word detach??? Great video btw
do I need to use the boot on the mic?? will it cause any damage or audio pickup problems??
And sometimes when you replace the screen or battery it will screw up the touch id.
followed your instructions now my phone is brocken !! cheers pal
Maybe you didn't get a touch capable charging set. Maybe you got a 5 not a 5s version
It charges perfectly now.
lol, you my new fav nigga on the net... Spent 15 mins clearing it out with a needle and works like a charm again... ty
Timsticles tv Haha! awesome. Even to help one person makes my day.
Just fixed mine the same way. Thanks, man!
Thank you sir
my pleasure, guys.
Jerry ...you are GOOD !!! Thank you so much and Happy New Year to you and yours !!
Simple if you have a talent for this sort of stuff. I love doing it so groovy all day
Just want to say thanks for the video- saved me from having to buy another phone!
+randvids Glad I could help! Thanks for watching.
Great, illustrated and very helpfull video - thank you very much
Hi do you know where to buy both the port and tool together! I just want to be sure that the reason why my phone is not working since its not charging properly. It took one whole day for it to charge to 21% and then it died rapidly. Also the phone is disable since the phone was given to me.
Didn't think it would but this fixed it for me!
Is this process the same for an iPhone 5?
Jerry , i see in this video you did not remove the logic board to do this fix of the Charging Port.....we dont need to remove it ? ...in other videos about this fix , they do remove the logic board, so please let us know . I have to do this work but i will like to get opinion on on this. Thanks in advance. Daniel Gomez
+Daniel Gomez I got your email as well. You do not need to remove the main board. You can do it exactly as shown in this video.
+JerryRigEverything
Thank you Jerry so much for your prompt response !! Have a happy New year !!!!!!
Very helpful~ Big Thanks Jerry Rig!
I ordered the parts and the replacement was smooth and easy. thank you.
Is the new charging port a different color than the phone? Like is it black or white?
Thanks, I followed your instructions today and now old iPhone 5s works again after two years laying dead in a drawer
Please about advice. My iphone after connection of charger shows flash at charger indicator but the percentages does not increase. If I connect the phone to PC so data transfer is OK but the battery doesn't charge. Can I replace the charger port or the issue is some different (motherboard)? thank you for your advice.
is there any difference between the charging port on the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s
where did you get that small tweaser things youre using and what is it
Dude I have an question if I changed my iPhone 📱 5 battery (1440mah) and insert new battery of 1660mah does cause any problem ???
I got 5s 2 days ago and when I go to plug it in it feels like a little stone is at the bottom of charging port
Thanks for your support
Very detailed and well explained. Thank bro, it works amazingly now
Get an interdental brush, clean port job done , no need to undo a thing , try with WD or Switch cleaner if naked brush dont work .
Thanks man! You saved me a $1000.
How do I know if it is the port that has gone bad or the battery needs to be replaced? I have never change the battery
I’m looking to find out what size the seven screws that hold down the charging port are. One stripped and I’m looking for a tool that can grab it out.
Just took a toothpick cleaned all the dust out, plugged in the charging cable, works perfectly
can you use the same procedure for all phones
I'm having a really hard time getting the charging port piece to snap in (the piece above the battery). Any tips?
heey! thanks for the vid! i followed each step but i cannot get the wired cable to click in? thanks
