    The nervous system of this woman! I have never heard Yuja Wang before and this is incredible. She is able to play the melody and the accompaniment at top speed, changing voices for the different characters - I've never heard Erlkonig sung with such chilling witchcraft. She made every shift of character clear. An amazing talent.

      @@zswu31416 Yeah, in his later years he revisited pieces because he began to feel he needed a playable legacy, if he ever wanted his music to be heard again. Many other notable pieces he made easier, like Don Juan (which is often further simplified/arranged by modern pianists). He really did care that people heard his music, so he tried to keep the original piece as much as possible, but still adjustments had to be made. Thank goodness, because I love his pieces! Maybe one day I can play some of his legendary ones, like his Dante Sonata, though that will definitely be far off, if ever.

    This is a translation of the poem - every pianist should know it before start playing:
    The Alder-King
    Who rides so late through night and wind?
    It's the father with his child;
    He has the young lad safe in his arm,
    He holds him tightly, he keeps him warm "My son, why do you hide your face, so frightened?"-
    "Don't you see, father, the Alder-King?
    The Alder-King with his crown and tail?"-
    "My son, it's a wisp of fog." "You sweet child, come, go with me!
    Such beautiful games I'll play with you;
    There are lots of beautiful flowers on the shore;
    My mother has many golden clothes"- "My father, my father, and don't you hear,
    What the Alder-King promises me softly?"-
    "Hush now, stay quiet, my child;
    The wind is whispering in dry leaves."- "Do you want, fine lad, to go with me?
    My daughters shall wait on you, hand and foot;
    My daughters lead the nightly dance,
    And they'll show you how to sway and dance and sing."- "My father, my father, and don't you see
    Alder-King's daughters in that dark place?"-
    "My son, my son, I see it clearly:
    The old willows shimmer so gray.-" "I love you, your beautiful shape tantalizes me;
    And if you are not willing, I'm going to use force."-
    "My father, my father, now he's grabbing me!
    Alder-King hurt me!"- The father is filled with horror, he rides quickly
    He holds the groaning child in his arm,
    He just barely reaches the homestead
    The child was dead in his arms.

    When considering execution, Kissin delivers a much cleaner and more controlled approach to this piece, but Wang embodies its true essence. Great dramatic emotion, separation of voices, and stays true to the story of the poem. I enjoy both Kissin's and Wang's execution of this piece. Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind?
    Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
    Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
    Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.
    Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht? -
    Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
    Den Erlenkönig mit Kron und Schweif? -
    Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif. -
    "Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
    Gar schöne Spiele spiel ich mit dir;
    Manch bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand,
    Meine Mutter hat manch gülden Gewand."
    Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
    Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht? -
    Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind;
    In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind. -
    "Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn?
    Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;
    Meine Töchter führen den nächtlichen Reihn,
    Und wiegen und tanzen und singen dich ein."
    Mein Vater, mein Vater, und siehst du nicht dort
    Erlkönigs Töchter am düstern Ort? -
    Mein Sohn, mein Sohn, ich seh es genau:
    Es scheinen die alten Weiden so grau. -
    "Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;
    Und bist du nicht willig, so brauch ich Gewalt."
    Mein Vater, mein Vater, jetzt faßt er mich an!
    Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan! -
    Dem Vater grausets, er reitet geschwind,
    Er hält in Armen das ächzende Kind,
    Erreicht den Hof mit Mühe und Not;
    In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.

    Wer reitet so spät durch nacht und wind. Es ist der Vater mit seiner Kind.
    Ending with the Words: Aber das Kind war tot.
    The dramatic poem is dressed in dramatic Music so well interpreted by Yuja Wang.

    This is amazing. So musical and with a huge range of tone colour. Always in control. Always musical. For all her virtuosity I love from about 0:43 where her left hand takes over the right hand's repeated chords absolutely seamlessly and without even the slightest change of tone. Such control. She's one of the greatest of her generation for sure!

    This is an amazing performance. I am not as aware of the more contemporary pianists as I should I suppose, she is phenomenal as well as learning that there is a Liszt transcription of the work for voice an piano. Super musicianship.

      Liszt transcribed a lot of other composers for piano, including a huge amount of Schubert's lieder! They're all beautiful, and quite difficult.

    A Goddess - HOW is it possible to play accompanyist (piano) and foreground (canto/vocal) part at once with ONE piano? Seen this only today with ONE violin (Hilary Hahn) - ... Deeply impressed... thank you! (I know a "thank you" is not enough, but it comes deep from my heart.)
