    Russian S500 and S550 systems have hypersonic counters already. And they have shown already that S300 system with the S400 radar can counter HIMARS system of USA. The one good thing - no need for a warhead as the kinetic energy alone does a lot of damage.

      @bob jardine And in reply to over hyped Russian military - the simple truth is if NATO thought they could win they would be in on the ground in a flash. They did with Kosovo, Iraq, and many other countries. When that training ground in the west got hit early on with hypersonic missiles and wiped the whole camp out. The west did not see those missiles coming. Over 400 NATO / foreign personal were killed and 400+ Million dollars in equipment destroyed. They knew Russia has a lot more stuff up their sleave and NATO wanted no part.
      It was a very clear message to the West, Bring it on if you think you can do it.
      This war is mainly being fought by the DPR / LPR with Russian backing. And the losses on both sides are high (Ukraine / LPR / DPR) while Russian losses have not been that high. That is why it is taking time. When this is over and the real number of losses from Ukraine are released, the world is going to be shocked at how one sided this whole thing ended up.

    Nuclear subs have provided first strike abilities for a long time. Also, rather than launch a hypersonic missile from the other side of the world, you could launch one clandestinely from close to your enemy. I don't see how the hypersonic ability makes the world so much more dangerous than it is.

    • @Twigmannn
      @Twigmannn 2 года назад +25

      I agree. This piece seems a little alarmist. With all ICBMs these days carrying MIRVs, no nation can meaningfully intercept a nuclear first strike as it is, so hypersonics don't change much in that respect.
      Similarly the US, Russia, and China all are operating some form of a nuclear triad to preserve second strike capacity, and I don't see hypersonics undermining the effectiveness of that either.

      It’s always been that way, MAD didn’t go away when the Soviet Union dissolved. This is a fear mongering peace to be honest, the nuclear triad concept was invented and implemented because of the fear that a first strike would destroy all land based means of retaliation, nuclear subs, a large nuclear bomber fleet, and the land based arsenal ensure that even if one is removed from play, there are still two other means of retaliation, making a first strike unthinkable in the first place. It sucks but it works, and I don’t see “hypersonics” changing that dynamic in any significant fashion other than giving people less time to panic that their lives are ending.

    @UnpepperedAngus 2 года назад +1

    I don't know if there as effective as this video makes it seem. As an engineer, I kind of have to think they're making some kind of a tradeoff. So any object (could even be fairly small) that can strike something going that fast is gonna do a shit ton of damage. And any distortion of critical flight surfaces at that speed is going to cause severe disruption. And I imagine, most of the weight is gonna be all in the warhead and just the amount of fuel its going to need, it probably isn't going to have much 'armor' (although I doubt it would do much good any ways).
    This is especially true for the scram jets. They work by very specific geometry in the intake, to position a Shockwave just right in order to create the necessary precombustion pressure for thrust. So I could honestly see even a ball bearing doing enough damage, for the missile to shake itself to pieces. So I unlike other missile defense systems (for ICBMs), which need to do significant damage. I imagine you only need to create a cloud of projectiles for one of these to go through and that'll take it out.
    If anyone knows more specifics, this is pure speculation.

If the intermediate range missile treaty and the anti ballistic missile treaty were in place, this technology would not even be deployed. The USA walked away from these and other treaties, such as the open skies treaty, for specious reasons and at the same time deployed "defensive" systems like aegis ashore in Poland and Roumania that can easily be reconfigured to launch tomohawks etc.

    The New Arms Race is both high-power laser weapons and hypersonic missiles. The only way to stop hypersonic missiles flying in the sky is to use high-power laser weapons from space satellites weapons, military planes, naval ships, and on the ground to shoot to destroy them. Laser light travels so many times faster than any hypersonic missile. Hypersonic missiles which are traveling a few times faster than the speed of sound, can be detected, tracked, calculated, and identified by high-tech radars and space satellites with supercomputers due to so much heat generated behind and a lot of heat at the noses of the flying hypersonic missiles and can be shot down by laser weapons.
