Ren has just released this short explaining he had to change the I to a ! So it wouldn't get restricted. ruclips.net/user/shortsJxe_rt3gnbQ?feature=share4
I find it really interesting that when actions like this are taken the blame falls more on YT than ourselves. We love free content, so much so we don't care why its free. YT has to run a profit, google is public which means it has to increase that profit quarter over quarter or its arbitrary share price falls as people panic sell. So YT, and google by extension, seeks larger and larger ad revenue as its the only way to keep this free ship afloat (YT alone was $7bil in 22). It seems like YT holds all the power, who wouldn't want to advertise on YT, but the reality of it is, the bigger the contract offered, the more likely youtube will take it. The hit YT takes from censoring content, or at the very least demonitizing it, is so much less than the hit they would take from arguing over contractual buzzwords that advertisers don't want to be placed in front of. This is the price we pay for free content. If we paid for it, we might have some leverage (of course acting on that is a whole different ballgame and tends to fail en mass, but at least we'd have a chance). I get that premium exists, but its not leverageable as the ad revenue still eclipses it If YT is guilty of anything here, its a combination of greed (a basic necessity in our democracy) and inconsistency. I rather like the latter as it just means not everyone gets punished. Is it fair, no, but at least not everyone is punished and the core messages can still get out there. I found this video, and you as a whole by extension, after the video was demonitized, if it means anything.
Many reactors have said in their reactions that they were going to avoid that word because of RUclips.... I think Ren using it in his catchy chorus is pointing out that we all have that word in our head (whether we seriously contemplate the act or not) and he repeated it BECAUSE it can be uncomfortable and our discomfort around the topic may serve to alienate the people who need us the most.
Totally agree!!! Ren knew this and made a point of saying the S word 30 times in the track to prove a point I think!!! The ad revenue, the money he could make from the song was not in his mind at all when he released it, what was important to him was to potentially save lives!!! Why can't RUclips see that instead of censoring it from more people that it could help!!!....
One wonders if the "establishment" wants us scared, anxious and divided. Keeping certain subjects taboo and unspoken keeps the subject in question a thing that isn't spoken about. As Ren himself said, if his song was about murder or violence there wouldn't be a restriction. Makes one wonder.
When i was going through the thoughts myself I wish people would talk about it That's why rens song touches so many people because he was speaking open and honestly
This really sucks! Your review was the most constructive and pragmatic reviews compared to tons of others that are still being suggested. Sorry, keep fighting!!❤
It was your reaction to this video that really helped me (and how I reacted to it) because you come from a unique perspective being on "the other side" but with more empathy and compassion than I've seen from a lot of other mental health "professionals". We NEED to talk about this and not treat it as a taboo.
I have to say, as a mom of 3 teenage boys, I really hope that they would have easy access to discussions and content like this because it’s that age group most at risk and the least demographic group that is actually listened to. I am super grateful for you doing what you do. I hope you feel encouraged to keep going and to keep trying to get that reach so more people have the tools or the know how to ask for help.
@@rosetintedglasses72 I am so sorry for your loss. There is a deep history of mental illness and suicide going back for generations in my family, so I get it. My twin sister went through 15 years of suicidal ideation and depression, my paternal grandfather shot himself and my paternal great grandfather shot himself. I’ve also struggled with my own depression for half my life. Sometimes you can’t outrun your hereditary tendencies.
@flutepiccKat Thank you I'm so sorry for your loss too. I have struggled with my own mental health too and worry about passing it on. Your understanding as a mother is a blessing to your sons
Sorry this happened. I watched a lot of reactions to that video and I don’t know how many of those got the same treatment, but yours did not stand out as particularly inflammatory or whatever else they might call it. In fact, I would say more than most other reactors, yours gave a lot of context and positive advice and it’s hard to believe an actual person watched it and found it objectionable.
This is so maddening. Personally I don’t think there should be an age restriction, unless it starts at 9 because the children thinking about and/or carrying it out are getting younger and younger. We all need to know about this and that it doesn’t effect just themselves, its tentacles reach everyone in such a devastating way. It will be a sad thing if YT hushes this topic. (Didn’t want to use any words that will alert YT.) I love your reaction videos, the knowledge and insight you, as a person and a professional, is invaluable.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial I remember a statistic, not sure how old this is but it was every 5 days a child 13 and under committed the act. That is absolutely horrifying!
Makes you wonder if RUclips is suppressing Suicide's view numbers....goes to show you that they can lower numbers without listening to content, YET allow garbage videos run numbers up. Suicide has an important message (as do the reactions) to convey. God bless .....keep the honest, heartfelt reactions coming. We value them and value your analysis. Bob Clark
I've personally seen the numbers for Ren's video fall (say, go from 650k to 620k a few hours later.) I don't know if that's merging repeated listens or what, but it seems like it's not totally on the up-and-up.
I see it with my own when YT thinks there have been bot views, or views from the same account / IP address etc. Obviously my own channel is waaaaay smaller but percentage wise its probably about the same. I do wonder though if YT can prevent some audiences from seeing it in the first place outside of formally restricting it. I'm not sure.
"YET allow garbage videos run numbers up" Some of the garbage you mention has been up for years, and has a body count. Anne Riordan covers the topic quite regularly.
In my direct comment to Ren (which he will probably never see lol) I thanked him and said that I was glad he formulated the chorus like that because it seems to me like a direct response or retaliation to the censoring of the word, and therefore censoring of discussion, which pushes people who need support away from places where they might receive it into isolation. Isolation is the most dangerous thing to hand to someone who is already at risk. I've left a few comments on your videos, and so you know I have a complex trauma history. I am a survivor of 'the word' (my dad and my brother) and also was abused by my mother and developed mental illness as a result of these things. My experience when I was at my lowest is that in online mental health spaces I was banned from discussing 'the word' even from my experience as a survivor because they decided it was dangerous. In spaces for 'the word' survivors I was banned from talking about my own health because they decided that discussion of mental illness was dangerous. It left me with nowhere online to be. Obviously, as a result of all that I've run into 'the word' a fair few times from the other side too. You don't survive by ignoring it. That's like trying to win a game of chess by not making a move. The clock keeps ticking and all the time you don't counter those thoughts, the other side is winning. I've thought about 'the word' for far longer than most, from all directions. I have no special insights. The truth is that we only pass on our pain to those we leave behind, and paired with that, isolating ourselves is a red flag (and yes you can do it without realising). We need community, relationships and a support network around us to be okay. We stay because we aren't alone here. And also, I've learned that the only person who can ever be responsible for it is the person themselves. As painful as it is, if it has happened in your life, you have to allow them their own agency then. They made the decision and they can't take it back. We can't beat ourselves up about if only we knew this or that or were faster or were there or took the day off work. You can't live as if the people around you... won't. That isn't living. Damn. Sorry for the novel again. :/ I promise I am happy a lot of the time. I'll... see myself out.
In the radio world if a word or phrase is repeated 3 times in an article or conversation it triggers an alert to something of importance Not necessarily negative but a topic that is trending, I've heard DJ's and announcers use it for their advantage, pushing a record so to speak. Speech writers I'm sure would know and use it. Ren might be aware and doing the same thing, maybe.
Thank you for sharing your experience in this honest and insightful comment. I haven't been through anything nearly as traumatic as you have experienced, yet I, too, have often contemplated, and even attempted, 'the word'. It affects so many of us, regardless of background (although, admittedly, some more at risk than others), it shouldn't be censored. It should absolutely be open for discussion. I believe you're correct about Ren's use of it in his song as well. The fact he used an upside down exclamation mark in place of the 'i' is not, I think, just because it looks like it. An exclamation mark denotes 'to exclaim'. Often, sufferers who choose to end their pain in this way do so because they could not exclaim. They couldn't talk about their pain, they couldn't explain it to anyone, they never felt heard and understood. This needs to change. I hope that, despite your own dance with the pendulum, you keep well, and keep talking. This internet stranger, for one (though im sure there were more), was here to listen ❤
As someone with Depression, PTSD and suicidal ideation I’m very open with my struggles and it’s tragic that RUclips is so afraid of this word. I understand if someone is trying to give instructions on ways to do it and that should be off limits. But if people are simply talking about their struggles and how they have made it out of that dark tunnel a lot of us enter then RUclips has become part of the problem. When I opened up about my suicidal ideation after I became a quadriplegic it opened a dialogue with family and friends. I found out from people I thought I was close to who had been struggling in silence for years. While I still struggle daily with suicidal ideation it’s maybe once a day or once every couple of days instead of literally every 5 minutes. As a quadriplegic you have a lot of time to sit (no pun intended) as someone who gets stuck in their head it’s hard to get out. Life isn’t easy, when you are held accountable by those who love you it makes it easier. Peace
I have been really uncomfortable with the way that Reactors have felt obliged to avoid using the word, that they need to find other ways of expressing it "unaliving", "self-deletion". We know what it is. We need to be able to talk about it. I understand where RUclips is coming from, they want to avoid the advocation of self-harm and suicide but their algorithms are not clever enough to understand the intent of the creator - advocation or prevention
I agree. It’s absurd. If someone is contemplating it it’s not because they heard a song or saw a video. I’m sure there are things out there that may glorify it, but honestly I’ve only ever seen things addressing suicide by saying that’s not the answer. I don’t get it. Does YT even watch anything before they restrict??
@@carladicarlo3255No. The thing is, YT has the money to have actual people look into these things first, but they don't because they know they are the biggest platform out thete by far and therefore don't have to do anything they don't want to. The truth is that YT doesn't really care about people at all. They show this by leaving up content that truly should be removed and by the ever changing rules they selectively apply to harrass their content creators and to avoid paying them as much as they can and to silence any speech they personally don't like, even if truthful/factual.
I think that your reaction was one of the best ones. Stopping and explaining feelings not lyrics. I think parents have the choice on the videos their kids watch. I ket my 14 year old daughter watch Ren's video and I let her watch your and Knox Hill's reactions. We had a discussion after each one. It opened a conversation that I didn't know how to start without sounding "lecturing".
Someone had that conversation with me when I was 14 as a result of a poem I wrote. Though I didn't feel that way, I am glad they didn't ignore it because for all they knew... I may have been. When I explained to them that it was just a poor choice of words, they explained to me that this was an issue that a classmate of mine (who was a cheerful and fun person) and some other students had. After that, they said that I had to take counceling to make sure. Better safe then sorry I've thought since.
I gave you an upvote for your good parenting. I don't have children myself so I TRY not to judge harshly, but I do get very bothered when people say, "How am I supposed to talk to my children about THIS?" as an argument for that topic being silenced entirely. I really think a parent's responsibility is to prepare their children to exist in the world, and not change the world to suit the existence of their children.
@@MichaelCRush seriously? I am almost 68yrs old and wayback in the day at 12yrs old I almost took my own life. It seemed the only answer at the time. A child at any age NEEDS to know that Suicide is NEVER the answer. A young child isnt mature or educated enough to make proper decisions. They NEED discussions with adults about what only SEEM to be adult topics. Maybe you NEED to grow up and be a Responsible Adult. Instead of a child afraid of realities that frighten you.
I was really looking forward to your reaction to Ren's video and was not disappointed. Your insight struck a chord with me and left me with a lot to think about and opened up conversations with family and friends. I am so grateful for you! I am a parent of an under 18 youth and felt it was completely appropriate for them. This is their reality. They are losing friends, neighbors, and classmates to suicide and it feels like the message they continue to receive is that adults don't want to talk about it and are unable to handle hard conversations. So they do their best to support one another. We need to do better. ❤
Thank you for this video. I had no idea you reacted to the newest song by Ren, and I am watching it now on my television. I appreciate your views and believe that anyone trying to help others in difficult situations should never be "silenced" by any means. Thank you for being one of the people who actually cares.
I thought that your video was appropriate and beneficial. This is exactly the kind of “guidance” that i was hoping would not happen with this one. I truly have no notes for you. Best Wishes.
Your reaction was the best, most insightful reaction I ever saw. The problem is RUclips is here for the money. Anything that might shade that relentless grasping for money will be removed. It has nothing to do with you, or your reaction in any other manner.
I've been suicidal since I was 10 years old. I'm now 27. Almost 2 thirds of my life, I've had 'this topic' in my head in some shape or form, sometimes stronger, sometimes manageable. Ren's music, and your reactions, should not be age restricted. They're discussing a topic that is more than prevalent in our society and is just a stigmatised as it was when I was 10. The system hasn't changed. I try and be open about my mental health as much as I can be when relating more generally, but I still don't like talking about my own personal feelings, probably because no one's really given me the floor to speak without those questions of family history, drink, risk, risk, risk. Everything is always swept under the carpet because it's too much to deal with, and then people end up giving up. This is a conversation that needs to be happening, and it need to be happening louder. But social media is censoring topics instead of dealing with them, instead of focusing on the people that are hurting, it's silencing them and anyone that wants to speak about it. I don't think speaking about it likely to push anyone into the action of taking their own life. It might, but I think it's far more likely that that person will see that what they are feeling is valid, they they are not alone, there are people who understand and want to help. But they can't because they've been silenced.
I've seen the lack of push on Ren's video aswell compared to his other recent tracks. It was trending the 1st day then dropped off like it hit a brick wall.
I wonder if it was restricted in some way then. I could view it whilst not logged in ( I think they use log in to determine age) and I was shown ads and the video. But I wander if they can still somehow restrict viewership outside of that. I'm still new to RUclips so figuring this stuff out.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial I get warnings that "this video deals with adult themes" or something like that, and I have to acknowledge that I really do want to see the video. CYA on YT's part, but yes, it's happening. I'm talking about Ren's release. I'm not seeing that on reaction videos, I don't think.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial other reactors use less restrictive platforms to download content. Then edit and show it on YT for the YT audiences. Patreon, Twitch, Rumble (is highly favored by some)
This censorship has to stop. It doesn't help people struggling with mental health and depression. In fact it just adds to the shame and lack of support that people already experience.
I agree with you as lots of teenagers seeking their identity in those early years of their lives need support. But if RUclips wants an age restriction I think 0-8 years would be appropriate. Maybe 0-12 years, but I find that already risky.
It's interesting that you say that health professionals shy away from asking about it. One of the "therapists " I saw basically told me I was s.....l and gave me pamphlets to read about it. I wasn't then and never have been s...l but I do struggle a lot with feel like I'm good enough for anything. Anyway as a mother I think it really depends on each individual child. My youngest is a deep thinker so I don't let him listen to certain songs unless I have the time right then to answer any questions he might have but I don't shy away from any topics with him. And at 7 yrs old he's thrown me some doozies haha.
Kudos to you for being a wise mom who pays attention to the temperament of her child! My three (all grown now) couldn't have been more different, and what one could have handled at a given age would not necessarily have been the same for either of the other two. We have to read them individually and do the best we can to guide them. Good job, Mom!
@WordsMeanThings_ Awwww, thanks, and yes, I have an older son as well, and they are complete opposites in everything, except both of their favorite colors are orange and red haha
I joke as a means of coping, and I'm afraid I terrified a psychiatrist once because it took them a second to realize my humor is a bit twisty. She asked me if I'd thought about suicide. The way she worded it struck me as funny, and so I responded (definitely not my wisest moment), "well, no.... but now that you mention it...." The look of horror that spread over her face was so alarming that I immediately felt guilty and explained that it was just my weird sense of humor and bad timing, lol. She was relieved and told me that her heart stopped for a moment. She laughed about it and soon learned that that was just the tip of my stupid sense of humor and timing. She also said that she hated asking that question for that very fear. My therapist now knows me well enough to laugh with me. He's figured out my oddball brain and has even managed to break through my humor shield a few times. I hate to cry about my own bs. I can cry at a commercial, and I often watch sad shows just to cry. But when it comes to my own trauma, crying just makes me mad at myself. But this topic desperately needs discussion! We need to feel connected, not ashamed. I have ideation due to a lot of reasons. I failed so many attempts, and even though I would not attempt now, it's so isolating to be in that dark hole of your own head. Without that connection, we might miss a path that can only be seen with the help of someone that we don't even know yet. If we keep censoring the subject, that connection may never be made and then that path gets unseen, leaving only one way in our sight. And that way is literally one-way with no return. Keep doing the awesome things you do; keep people aware. Keep talking about it. It's one of the most important things we can do. Bless
This is why it's so important that these things should be monitored by people not algorithms and bots. If a human reviewed your video they would see that it doesn't put anyone in danger - quite the contrary. This shows exactly what we were talking about in the comments of the reaction; the importance of talking about the subject and the way it is still treated as a taboo. I'm sorry that they have throttled your reaction when it should be an important part of the conversation. Regarding age restriction, I have a young person in my family who first attempted to leave aged 9. Videos like yours that promise there is help out there need to be available to young people. And videos like Ren's, that acknowledge the thoughts and the desire for pain to end, but lead the viewer to better understand the pain it leaves behind, are vital too.
I believe I viewed your reaction before it was flagged. What a shame. Out of all the reactors, you are one of my favorites. You have so much compassion and insight. I wrote a recovery song and posted it about 20 years ago. It was getting a lot of views (for me a lot anyway) and then one day it got flagged. The viewing is pretty much non existent now. 😢 It’s also a shame as it was only helpful, in my opinion. No censoring! That is how I feel.
Well I subscribed to your channel yesterday after viewing your S reaction because I am impressed by your viewpoints, and want to hear more. It's a darn shame that it was restricted. I'm guessing it was for saying the S word, which isn't fair, but that is youtube's rule, for now. I hope you'll forge ahead and continue to talk about it (in code of course). You're VERY GOOD at this, and it's important.
Stu, I loved your reaction and find it hard to believe they dropped your discussion. Ideation can start at a very young age and is now more common than ever.
in Canada, 85% of attempts at the S . word fail it is a tortured soul reaching out to get help as they either were not or did not have the skills to ask for help in the conventional way thank goodness and a select few underpaid and overworked mental-health workers can and have seen behavioral indications of this kind of Ideology in certain people ..I am 57 and through the grace of the divine I am still here as I have tried and would have had successes in my endeavor twice .. both times my mother intervened but both times she was supposed to be in town or at a relative's for hours .. but onetime her vehicle was acting up and the other time she had a very sick feeling in her stomach .. she rushed home and found me in the act .. thank her intuition and divine providence that she did or I would have not been around after I turned 12... I support you in your endeavors and hope you can reach as many people as you did before .. god bless
I truly believe that if someone is old enough to understand it. They ARE old enough to HEAR it. Too many children, who would be age restricted are making this final mistake. I have seen another reactor have to re edit his video. To remove the S word. I bet this video was a serious pain for yt. A word that is basically banned, Ren says 30 times. Good for him.
I was wondering if anyone had actually censored the original Ren video during their reaction. Although I must admit I removed some swearing from my Tales of screech reaction as I thought that might get restricted if I didn't. I talk to my children about this topic, because I hope that by doing that they will know they can come to me in the future and I'm not going to shy away from the conversation.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial No he did it in a re release . I saw the unedited version the day it came out. I would imagine he ran into the same problem you did. Edited it to solve the problem.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial I visit over 150 reactors. Seems swearing inside the video is Not censored by YT. The "S" word is not censored inside the song or video. It is censored Onlu when the Reactors say the "bad words". Or those words are in the title of the song. Ren commented on how he had to substitute a symbol for a letter in its title to keep it from being restricted, so he could upload it. Pissed him off, but he did it, because he also believes it needs to stop being a taboo topic.
I’m sorry I missed the chance to watch the video. The way you talk through and explain all aspects of a difficult conversation is so beneficial to some such as myself that does not have the knowledge or training in these matters. I did have a long write up as to how I feel about how this platform conducts its self and how poorly it works with its customers on such difficult yet important topics. But I quickly realized that this would only work against me in one way or another, so I will just look in the mirror for a while and press it back down and move on to another day. Good luck in your endeavour and I will always keep watching. Thanks 😊
The original is still up on my channel. Its just that it won't be shown outside of that so you can still watch it. Thanks for the good luck and take care.
I think age restriction is problematic. If someone is watching your channel they are probably seeking help with the topic already. Restricting access to channels that can offer help or comfort seems ridiculous. If you can't talk about it, you can't / won't ask for help.
I just went back and watched your reaction video. One thing that struck me in it was that your target audience seems to be clinicians who may be working with at-risk people rather than those at-risk people themselves. A lot of reactions I've heard, and especially on this video, talk about the gut-punch that it delivers, the skill and artistry with which it's done, the relevance of the topic and the need to get help if you are struggling with thoughts like this. All of those things are valid and important. Your content, however, dealt with troubling facts, research and statistics about how hard it is to assess risk for suicide, and how bad the instruments are at identifying the genuine risk. I did feel a concern that if someone was struggling with those ideations, hearing about these professional challenges in targeting and identifying the issue might make someone hesitate to reach out for help. Kind of a, "What's the point?" way of thinking. You also said "the word" several times throughout the course of your reaction, and I think the algorithm pays attention to that. I'm not saying you said anything wrong. Yours is an important perspective, and your concerns should be communicated and addressed. *Should* you have been restricted? I don't know. I just think these may have been some of the reasons that went into the decision. Don't let this discourage you. Lots of content creators are getting smacked for all kinds of things. I'm glad your video is still up at least. Keep up the good work you're doing. Hopefully, this was just a bump in the road.
Sad times indeed. I actually have been thinking a lot about, how far Ren is going to push these taboo topics? I really don't want to see him censored/cancelled, but they will do it IF he gets too big. I feel he needs to get seriously established world wide before he starts seriously attacking corporations/governments, or they will cancel him, with jail time or the likes. I can see it coming, and it concerns us all greatly. btw, your vid was quite informative and definitely would have done way more good than harm.
Nope. The only reason the music video is getting shown on RUclips is because Ren's big enough now to earn RUclips money. RUclips is a business. They're concerned about money. That's it. Don't be fooled - the restrictions aren't because the RUclips board is full of worry and concern about the children. They're because the RUclips board is full of fear that they will get sued by some misguided, grieving parents. Case in point: the music video itself isn't restricted, but this smaller channel's discussion about the video is. Putting restrictions on this smaller channel's video enables RUclips to say, "Well, we were obviously concerned, we took steps," without actually losing very much money. The bigger Ren gets, the more ability he will have to push conversations like this, but he definitely does not need to wait. He's obviously big enough now, he's making RUclips enough money now, to start talking. And I doubt Ren is going to wind up in jail for making music; if other artists can rap about all the people they're going to "cap" because they're soooooo cool, then Ren can rap about mental health.
@@yilomina2047 I disagree. I'm not talking about RUclips taking Ren down. When you go out there (yes just a song I know) and sing about burning down the Parliament Buildings, its going to prick some ears up. Some very powerful ears. IF "they" think he's getting to big, and influencing large amounts of people to be "anticapitalistic pissed off rebels" They will take action, make no mistake. They will charge him with so many bogus things, the lawsuits will make his head spin. And could be the End of him..... Money Game 3, is going to hit HARD, I Fkin know it. I just hope Ren has thought it all the way through is all I'm saying.
Personally, I think your content (including the video in question) is consistently appropriate and shouldn't be age restricted. Being able to look at these things and have meaningful dialogue about them and promote empathic communication is something I think we should proliferate, not restrict. I shake my head in dismay at the messed up priorities of our systems. I saw a comment about RUclips basically trying to avoid risk - which is tied to financial concerns in our "sue everyone" culture. I'm not sure how to fix it, but I thank you for what you do here on RUclips, and I will keep on listening to your videos regardless of whether the algorithm makes it easy for me to find them. :)
I am reminded of a story from a few years ago. F*** book was receiving criticism for some of the extreme content that was being posted, so they issued community standards that, among other things, banned "skinhead" because of it's association with far right politics. But the original skinheads were not far right, and a number of that generation were anti-fascist activists. (The movement was coopted basically because it looked tough.) So, when the ban was applied, anti-fascist skinheads got booted, including Neville Staple of The Specials. Social media companies are not free speech platforms but private companies where we provide the content (for free) & they use that for marketing purposes. I think they often use blunt tools that fail to understand context to manage their content to create the image of a responsible corporate citizen. In this case, I think there was enough information to judge that your video should not have been pulled (I did manage to watch!) because of the context of a professional talking about issues of mental health. The original music video should not even be restricted. (Ren provided commentary on this recently, somewhere.) You even provided some valuable statistical information that should be part of the discussion. But, it is a privately owned platform, so we have to learn how to adapt to it's standards. Hopefully issues like this help these companies to hone their tools that allow for a more nuanced and positive discussion.
Thats Noel. My video is still up, but for all intents and purposes it may as well not be due to how restricted it is. Like you say context is everything, I guess to some extent there is so much content uploaded to YT that they put in blanket restrictions. I'm not excusing them, I'm just trying to understand. At the end of the day they want to push videos with ads to make money, as they are a business at the end of the day.
@noelward1367 I was going to write something along the same lines but you said it for me, except I added a bit😁 "Social media companies are not free speech platforms but private companies where we provide the content (for free) & they use that for marketing" ( and to make money from, a lot of money)
First time i watched Hi Ren i had a panic attack I have PTSD and many other mental and physical health issues but thought i needed to watch it again so i watched someone reacting to it that was the best thing i could do i have watched many times since. One thing i think about the Hi Ren and SUICIDE songs is it needs to be seen by every one even in schools, because how many children kill themselves because of the negativity towards them from nasty comments and bullying to them believing what is said. I went through hell, bullied all through school to the point i attempted suicide twice, if there was something in place for children at that time and even now how many Suicides could have been prevented. Both these songs open up conversations helping others to talk about what they are feeling. As for Ads on video's these songs are perfect for Ads on mental health awareness and help lines for those who need them
After watching your reaction to Ren's video I posted a comment on the latest update on his channel about it and how supportive you are. Suggested he watch your reactions if he hasn't already done so with a link to your video on the subject. I don't know how else to contact him. I got a reply from a different Ren offering me an investment opportunity. It would be awesome if somehow you can get this current video about the restriction to him. I think he should be notified. I think, possibly more than anything, you scared some powers that be by calling out our healthcare system. Thank you for your approach to this topic. One of the best reactions I've seen.
Self censorship is an insidious force. This is one way that ideologies reliant on hierarchies, and the acceptance of them as "necessary evils," reinforce and perpetuate themselves.
i think we all need to talk about the subject. so we can help people get through the pain and hurt that would make them contemplate such a course of action. the thoughts of self deletion are present in most people at one time or another if children think it is not then they will be even harder on themselves when the thoughts occur to them and less likely to open up to someone and seek help. so, the taboo in effect causes more people to feel worse about themselves and possibly carry it out. just my opinion. i for one thought your reaction video was good for mankind and helps bring this important subject to the light.
You are a professional in this area. You know what you are talking about. This scares the corporate side. RUclips is for fun not for helping people. But where are you going to go? You didn't say anything bad. Keep on keeping on. From Clearwater, Florida.
This company is just messed up man I Love you review As somebody who struggles with with schizophrenic Disorder P TSD your voice is calm and soothing to me and you approached it professionally with knowledge I needed to hear it. Thank you good sir
I thought your reaction was superb, thoughtful and sensitively handled and am mystified why it might have been restricted. Unfortunately monolithic bureaucracies are intractable and arbitrary in their decision making.
What's even more worrying is I can only see this problem being exasperated with our government's sweeping and arbitrary online harms bill as and when that gets pushed through. It's almost as if they don't want people talking about this stuff and healing.
I think if we don't talk about these things openly nothing will change. I also think that if RUclips's criteria is based on whether or not advertisers will spend their money on a particular subject or not it shows exactly what is wrong within our society! When a company like RUclips feels that ad revenue/money supercedes people's right to well being and the ability to communicate openly about a important but uncomfortable subject, it speaks worlds to the motives/culture of that company.
I understand the corporate desire to cover their ass to mitigate possible risk. But if that is their goal, it seems insane to me that your video was age-restricted when others aren’t. The inconsistency is what gets me. Plus, your reaction video helped expand into a healthy conversation about “the word that shall not be named”… it blows my mind and saddens me that your reaction won’t be more widely available. I personally really appreciated your thoughts and insights, so thanks for recording it and for your commitment to continue. To answer your question, thinking about by own young kids I could see restricting this kind of content (like the original video and most reactions) to maybe 10 years old - it is stuff I’d really like to talk through with them, but then again, if they need it and aren’t comfortable talking with me, then I would hope that they could find this on their own. It is a tough balance to strike on a mass scale. I’m sorry to see that you ended up on the restricted side of it…
I’m not even sure the age restriction matters that much as according to my analytics everyone is above the age of 20 anyway (subscriber wise). I think (my opinion) that as it can’t have ads, therefore no money for YT, it doesn’t get pushed to people as much (which I can see by my analytics). I agree it is a tough balance when there is so much content being uploaded all the time, it can’t possibly all be checked.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial Yes it is a tough job and I understand that algorithm/automations can flag a false positive (especially at this scale). I would just hope that a human could’ve approved your appeal… it seems so blatantly obvious to me, but I’m also very much on the sidelines. So who knows. 🤷♂️
Thank you for this post. This reminds me of Ren’s comment to CNN when a snippet of Hi Ren was used in a piece about teen suicide (if you want to kill you then you gotta kill me). Never mind that the song ended up triumphant. The mere thought of the word suicide is taboo. Saying the word isn’t putting the idea into peoples’ heads. It’s already there. But talking about it may save lives. I’ll never understand this backward thinking. Some people just don’t want to face reality, whether it’s mental health and suicide, or how the world is changing to become more accepting. After all, stats show marginalized teens have a much greater risk, yet here we are, making it harder and harder for them to live peacefully. We NEED to talk about it. When my mental health problems started as a teenager because of abuse trauma, it was swept under a rug. I eventually sought help, but I’m 54 now, and I wonder if my life may have been better had there been an openness in society like you and Ren are trying to bring to the table. I’m nowhere near where I’d like to be, and I really think if I had nipped this in the bud at an early age and learned to love myself instead of living a life of dread and sadness and anxiety, I’d be a different person. Please keep speaking up. It is so important.
I try to imagine what RUclips is doing but it’s not clear. Algorithms don’t make good decisions people do better but I imagine any one reviewing videos is overworked, uninformed, not committed to the topic… So how can they make a good decision? IDK? Keep doing what you’re doing ❤
Intentionally avoiding the song, after losing my brother when he was 35 (I was 30, 17 years ago) and then just a year ago one of my closest friends that I'd known for... 34 years... I absolutely hate thinking about it or hearing about it. I've gotten to a place where I can talk about my brother and even say his name, I've accepted that the decades that I HAD him are more important than the moment I lost him, that said, I still avoid the topic if i can. I've seen RUclipsrs say "self-deletion" to avoid being censored, THAT phrase is far worse to me. Personal pain aside, kids have to talk about it and also see adults talk about it (who can do it well, as I'm sure you did). The "sweep it under the rug" tactic NEVER works and most often exacerbates our problems! But this is the route that RUclips decided to go, at least with content creators, musicians (if they are backed by a label) often get away with bending the rules.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial Thank You, it was broken for a long time💔but I've manage to bandage it up enough to cope❤🩹. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
I saw a gambling company I used to work for advertising on Ren's video (others too). I reached out to my cousin to advise it was inappropriate to advertise on it, given how much this addiction plays it's roll in putting people in this dark place. I'm grateful the message was heard and he was in a position to do something about it. I think this might be the first but perhaps necessary controversy of this track I notice they're still advertising on a lot of reaction videos too. That's youtube and the gambling industries bad though, not the content providers. I know how much money is made from gambling CPA deals. It's sickening, the content providers won't even get a tiny fraction of that either, nor would they probably want to if reviewed in good faith.
I was negatively affected as a young child because back then nobody talked about this topic even with the people directly affected by it. Ren's video felt like a breath of fresh air that was blowing all the stigma away. I get that some restriction is good but the present You Tube restrictions seem to be more about stigmatising a term more than the content that is being discussed. I think my life might could have been very different if the people around me had felt more able to talk about what had occurred. Instead I needed many years of therapy to process the grief when I was older. I am still getting my head around the neglect I experienced at this time because society was frightened by this topic.
As Ren said in a livestream following the release of Suic!de: it’s ridiculous how one can talk about violence, abuse and murder with no intervention from YT but using the word suicide is somehow problematic?!? How are we supposed to talk about this topic and create awareness when we can’t even use the word suicide? Not using the word could make it more hush hush and taboo for young teens who might be dealing with suicidal thoughts. Anyone old enough to know what suicide is, is old enough to know that Ren, you and other reactors are trying to create awareness not harm. A shame YT don’t. Love your work, hope it gets the reach it deserve and creates awareness.
Here is my thought process on the topic. Suicide itself is not an age-restricted thought. Suicidal ideation is not an age-restriction process. The pain of losing someone to suicide is not an age-restricted form of grief. The stigmatization around the word itself is, I think, part of why some don't seek help. I've been afraid to reach out in the past when in that mindset because I was scared people would call me selfish or dramatic (which did happen) and it's heartbreaking. I've lost people close to me for the same reason. These are vital discussions, and your reaction to the video was my favorite of the few I watched because you listened to the piece without pausing very often, and when you did pause to speak I could tell that you were thinking about your words and their impact. This is one of the many reasons I'm going into mental health. We as a society need to stop making mental health a taboo topic, and Ren (as well as NF) are doing a beautiful job trying to do that very thing. Talking about the dark moments as well as crawling out of them. I'm glad I found your channel and am looking forward to future content from you.
He was smart to change the spelling so it didn’t get blocked. I’m sure you’ve heard him speak on it saying it’s sad when they put more power in the word than the action and message!
We live in a "nanny world" that is so focused on not triggering people that we effectively make the world a more dangerous place for those very people. There are so many things that affect mental health that would be much smaller issues if only people were prepared to talk about those things, instead of pretending they don't exist.
I can't speak to most of this, but for the numbers, it could be that this is a hard song. With other Ren songs, I have watched many many reactions, from many many people. With this song, because I cry every single time, and it hits like a truck, I have only watched reactions from people I would trust to do it justice. You are one of those people. This song may just be too hard for many people to hear again and again. Even for fans of Ren. It could be as simple as that for the numbers. That said, RUclips is RUclips. We are the product and they package us in whatever way makes them money, so there is a good chance they are also the reason. Run at scale, I expect very few real people in RUclips see any of the content RUclips flags in any way. Employees may see these things as users of RUclips, but likely very few see videos as part of the job. And if they do, I expect it is for some of the worst of the worst stuff. In the end, the cows don't get to decide on their packaging at the grocery store. (Not sure that works, but it is what it is.) It is money and not health. The outcomes are money, not health. Keep doing what you are doing, but RUclips will always be RUclips, and likely only get worse as more and more money is involved.
A lot of teens contemplate or go through with suicide so I don’t think restricting the age would help them much at all. I think this we know best for others attitude is wrong even if a young person asks about it, it will create an opportunity to discuss the topic. Funny because a few reactors have mentioned being restricted.
There might be a position that it's not OK to profit from the topics of self harm or suicide, I get that, but there are some incredible organisations that could benefit their client base by advertising, eg childline, papyrus, shelter, mind etc and even counselling platforms such as betterhelp. Perhaps there's a greater need to match ads to topics. Age-wise, this should be up to primary carers. There are ways of limiting your child's exposure to topics if you feel the need, without resorting to global corporate nannying. Counselling young people, I'd say talking explicitly about self-harm and suicide is an essential part of the work. Being able to hold someone else's deeper personal truths is how we can explore coping strategies and co-create a protective support with, and for, those who face these struggles each day. If you're old enough to feel like you don't want to be here, then you're old enough to benefit from discussions such as the one you've had limited. Not saying the word 'suicide' doesn't somehow magically disappear the subject, it just tells people we don't want to hear their pain. I'm really sad (but not surprised) to see this has happened. Maybe there needs to be an intervention, a communication between an organised group of mental health professionals (bacp, ukcp, ncs, etc) and RUclips to determine how we manage the subject without the taboo.
I’ve gone back and listened to your original reaction and I think the biggest difference between you and other reactors is that you are not explicitly condemning the act while others do. That may be misconstrued as condoning it. Being a therapist myself, I understand where you’re coming from (ACT in particular) and I do think you are openly talking about it from different angles. I have no idea about how YT enforces their standards but I think it’s not about merely saying the word as several others did that too. It appears to be more the open stance - that’s just my impression. Remember, it is never about an honest discussion, it is about revenue. Sorry for being a little cynical, I think it’s good that we’re talking about it and it’s so important to do that. So, keep going!
instead of rewriting it I am going to paste the comment the comment I left on Alex Hefner's channel about this issue: I hate that YT doesn't put a human voice to blocking things. You say a certain word, BAM! No care of context. No care that keeping a word from being said, gives it more power by hiding the harsh truth of it. Hiding that truth keeps a few from understanding or appreciating the the permanence of it. The more we understand a concept in context to our own lives as well as others, the less power it has and the less mystifying it it. I can't speak for anyone, or even begin to understand their "why", who has taken that action that can't be undone, but I think if some of these wanting souls had a better understanding of what it meant and an awareness that there are a lot of other people who have similar struggles as them, then maybe some of these folks would have been saved.
I am so happy for artist like Ren and others who are not afraid to share these painful moments in their lives in ways that others can relate to and process in ways that will have a positive impact on many lives going forward. I have explained in other comments on YT how Ren's art has affected me. I am thankful for his voice and I am thankful for the people sharing their thoughts and experiences because of his amazing story telling. It all leads to an understanding that the word is not bad. Saying the words does not cause people to act. Hiding that word can do more harm than good.
I havent come across Alex Hefner - going to check him out now! My Tales of Screech video was originally flagged for inappropriate content and when I asked for human review they said it was fine and the restriction got lifted so in some cases it can be okay. But its so hard to actually just ask someone specifically which bit they don't like. And I completely agree with, and it fits with all my experience (and the actual evidence) that saying the words does not cause people to act. Hiding the word does more harm than good overall.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial in most cases, Ren himself will contact RUclips and get the ban or restrictions lifted. He wants all his videos, reviews and all out their being seen/reviewed.
I'm a suicide survivor and this is exactly why there is so many people who attempt or succeed in taking their own life because it's treated has a taboo subject so we fall through the cracks we are hurting to point we resent being alive we feel completely alone trapped by totally darkness in our minds with constant negative thoughts feeling despair and where told talk to someone anyone but then when someone releases a song which contains the word suicide it gets aged restricted if your reaction video reaches out to someone contemplating suicide and stops them trying then surely that's a good thing You can't put a price on a person life and by You Tube saying companies won't put their ads on the video then they are making it about revenue and that's more important to them that's a disgrace there shouldn't be an age limit on the video because we know that many children under the age of 18 years old are harming themselves and rate is growing at an alarming rate because of how much pressure society is putting them under so these type of songs are to important to age restrict yes put warnings by all means but stopping people being able to start conversations because it's a difficult topic shouldn't even matter we need to talk about it and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues by doing this is counter productive your doing more harm by trying to censor the word This subject really gets me annoyed if the ad companies don't like the subject who cares you can't allow this subject to just be swept under the carpet these are real people lives your putting at risk doesn't that not matter more than money guess not
I think the ad companies should pull their heads out and stop trying to tell people what they can and cannot view. It took me three years to finally open up to my doctor about my thoughts because of the 'taboo' surrounding the topic. It would be so easy for me to give up my daily battle with pain and suffering...just stop eating and drinking and drift off to sleep. Talk like yours keep me ready to fight another day. Knowing I am not alone helps far more than it triggers anything. Thank you for not letting this go unsaid. Thank you for taking a stand. I do wonder if yours was targeted because of your country restrictions? Possibly?
The country thing is an interesting take. I’m not sure how many English reactors there but that could have something to do with it. I could understand it being restricted to viewers in my country but 90% of my audience is from America so not sure how all of that works.
Its pants, that's what it is, especially when you were so eloquent and empathetic in your response that did nothing to suggest you should say what you did. People mention Rumble. Is this a better platform maybe. Keep doing what you are doing though Stuart 👍
I believe in being open and authentic (to the best of our abilities) in every way we can. That said, I'm against censorship on a fundamental level. Particularly when it comes to artistic examples. Stigmatizing topics and hushing the voices that speak them (especially from a point of discussion and understanding) does more harm than the thought that it will potentially 'put the idea into peoples minds' does. Compassion comes from the truth and silencing those who speak it only serves to separate and condemn those who already struggle to express their truths.
I'm just commenting to show support. There are awful pockets of the internet where vulnerable people are harmed and encouraged to self-harm, and it's important to set guidelines to protect people. However, the fact is that many people are either affected by thoughts of self-harm, or are affected by other people in their life self-harming, including going the full way and 'un-aliving' themselves. I've been on both sides of that fence myself. We need to talk about it. Ren's songs get so many review/reaction videos BECAUSE we want to talk about these topics openly and positively. It's a difficult area for platforms, but I hate that they give up and just make blanket standards that close down dialogue on difficult topics. Another one that annoys me is the word 'R*pe'. It diminishes victims to not even be able to say the name of the crime committed upon them.
You haven't been censored. The video is still there (as you've acknowledged) and it still appears in 'search' for people to find. You're just not going to make money from it. But if you're concerned about getting less views, then you have to be honest with yourself by asking the question: what do I really care about most? Education and awareness? Or making money? If you want both, then the only way is to self-censor, such as not using the word in the title of the song. We live in an age of technological regression. Humans no longer run these platforms, they're run by primitive automated bots programmed by reductionist humans of whom don't take basic context into consideration. And yes, having to self-censor makes it awkward. So it comes back to that simple choice. Education and awareness? Or making money? What do you really care about most? You come across as a sincere guy, and I appreciate your videos. You do seem to genuinely care about spreading awareness. So I hope you make the sensible choice. In my admittedly somewhat bold view, youtubers obsession with monetization is ruining youtube. Just as the global monetary market system has ruined everything else.
I've got subscribers messaging me saying they just get a blank screen when they try and play the video. If people aren't logged into accounts then I also don't think they can see it as thats what YT uses to age verify. I don't care about the money (the video is called as ineligible for monetisation anyway despite the limited reach), I care about the reach, and the fact is my reach is being massively impacted due to the nature of what I am talking about. I can't spread education and awareness if YT doesn't push my videos to people. How are we supposed to open up conversations about this if when we try to, it gets massively restricted. Even the original Ren video isn't restricted and he uses the word plenty throughout so its more than just picking up that word, and my appeal was human review and they said it was inappropriate content and would be restricted.
Anyone who would intentionally seek out videos on the topic, who is browsing your channel, or to whom the algorithm gods would recommend your video to is likely to have sufficient age/maturity to watch both Ren's Su!clde and your reaction. No age restriction needed. As for attracting advertising - I can see some products/companies wanting to avoiding troubling topics, but others could be a great fit.
I've heard people as young as 11 talk about having depression and contemplating suicide. Restricting this content from those kids won't make it any better, they've already been exposed to the harsh reality of life. In fact, I think it's a disservice to them. They need to hear this as much as the adults do.
The irony here being that as people we are all encouraged to talk about this issue - yet the platforms want to remove any reference to it. Talk about screwed up! Not surprised there are so many of us who feel lost and confused! I know of no other species on our planet who, having grown up and left the family home, then need to be 'nannied' for the rest of their lives. What is so important about Ren's track is that he addresses those who get left behind. There is too much emphasis on mental health illness and not enough on the families, friends and loves ones are who left devastated. Why does a social platform think it's unnecessary to discuss this important angle? I think Ren is probably too deep and meaningful for the censors.
Because you didn't just watch it, get choaked up, then leave it at that like many (not all) reaction videos have. It wasn't even the use of the word. It was because you DARED to say what we really needed to hear: that this topic shouldn't be shied away from. We need to strip away the taboo and allow ourselves to talk more freely about topics of this nature. It would go a long way to allow people to be less afraid to reach out and ask for help; to admit that they are NOT ok. I'm with you on this.
Completely agree, I think its because I opened it up more than the other reactors did. I need to find out how much i can say without being so restricted that no one hears it.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial I think there is fault on their part in the sense that this is something RUclips needs to change, not you. I understand why they began doing this (I was on RUclips when it was struggling to be noticed), it's because there have been people who've committed the act on here while live streaming it. It's sad, but disallowing the word doesn't stop the deed. The change needs to come from them to allow their algorithm to perform a soft flag then a live person to watch it when it's appealed. We also live in a TW era. I'm both a survivor and someone whose lost a person very dear to me, and that's only trauma around this topic. If I'm triggered by any form of content on or offline then it's up to me to remove myself from whatever it is and bring it up to my therapist. Many things will never be sorted out completely and that's ok too. I never know when something will trigger me or when it won't, and it can be the same content hits me differently based on other factors in my life at the time. I understand your need and desire to know how much you can or cannot say, but the fact remains RUclips needs to evolve in order for things to be able to change for the better.
I really don't care what advertisers think is appropriate tbh. I watch RUclips to discover talented new artists whom I'd not get to hear on mainstream media. Ren is just such an artist & he isn't afraid to push the envelope to encourage honest open discussion on any topic!
I think the reality of the world we live in, at this moment, will never be okay with acknowledging such a reaction video. And, more than that, will mostly choose to ignore or even try to cancel singers such as Ren. Because for whatever reason, the methodology of See no evil Hear no evil Speak no evil is more acceptable, as a world, than acknowledgment. And yet, I was acutely aware of what suicide when I was 6. And perhaps if people were more open with discussing the topic than less people would follow through.
I have always said that if someone mentions this subject to me, it is because they don't want to have those thoughts. I also warn people that suggest the subject, that if they say it to me, I'm calling the available hotlines. We have to remember that YT #1 priority is profits. If you listen to Ren then you've heard the line "Throw out all your morals, they're a poor man's quality". YT has no care for system logic, health of the world, health of the individual. They are driven by the corporate customers, which PAY advertisement money, and it is THAT money that drives YT decision making processes. To try to think of "logical" reasons for this or that decision, that logic isn't a YT driven algorithm, it's an advertiser drive one. There is no logic, only profit. The lawyers of YT realize that there is a digital record of who watches what, how many time, view history, likes, etc. A subpoena via a perceived influenced viewer could cost millions in front of a jury. So, the lawyers make rules, and punish content providers, because content providers are the least powerful in this whole chain of consumerism. The question isn't about your subject at all. The question is about money, and the use of power, and how to keep and/or make more money.
My sister committed suicide many years ago now and I've also considered it on various occasions through life but its not something I would act upon as I have people and a dog that rely on me. When I turned 51 I managed to convince myself that I guaranteed have less time in front of me than I've left behind which gave me a little mental peace. The choice my sister made and my thoughts have been bouncing around my head for over 25 years now and I've not been able to have a porper conversation about it with anyone. I've spoken with doctors, therapists, friends and even strangers and its a complete conversation stopper with most. Its seems a taboo subject to talk about even though its prevalent in todays society and especially in the younger generations. Doctors that I've seen don't know what to say or even understand how you feel and what you are going through which is understandable if they've never been through it. Therapists I've had glance over it and never really return to the subject. Its a very serious issue that's never going to improve unless we all start talking about such things
Your reaction was excellent. This angers me. It must be talked about. Ive seen alot of reactions this didn't happen to that said this taboo (sarcasm) word. I have no idea but its enraging. I can't believe we can't have healthy helpful discussion about such an important topic. It really really angers me. Ive been getting more angry as months have gone by and i don't know how much longer I can stomach it. Yours was a really insightful one that i actually wanted to watch again. Ugh. Hopefully they'll sort it out. I don't know how it works but what if you put a bleep which is ridiculous but at least your reaction could come back. Im Really sorry this happened to you
Well, if youtube wanted your opinion on anything they would give you one!! In the meantime, watch what you say about this, and don’t dare talk about that but “enjoy your freedom of speech”
I was 11 the first time I had a peer who had attempted to kill herself. She was 10 when she tried the first time. We became inseparable for the next two years and I consistently had to stop her from self harming. So no. It's a very straight forward thing in my experience, this topic isn't nearly as age restricted in real life as people think so discussions shouldnt be when they come from thoughtful places, which yours does. The first time my dad had to deal with the topic, he was 7 and found his brother in the bathtub. My uncle survived and still has the prominent scars on his arms. They never talked about it. My uncle tried again several other times. He once drove a car into a tree. He disappeared during a psychotic break for about 18 months. The family didnt talk about that either. But my dad grew up with that. He was undiagnosed bipolar for a long time. Most of his life. It set in the month I was born. Two weeks before I was born, my grandfather fired my dad. Not because he was a bad worker, but because the boss' son and my dad butted heads and grandpa was pressured to let someone go. My mom said her husband went to work and someone else came home. I was 20 when he was diagnosed and 30 when he passed. He was suicidal most of my life and its been nearing 4 years since he passed and I'm still so bitter because he had finally wanted to live more than anything. Suicide and suicidal ideation is part of our life. And we dont want to talk about it. I remember reaching a new level of depression in one of my major depressive fits. I'm blessed to not suffer from suicidal ideation but a second cousin killed himself then. And i realized I finally understood it, as much as anyone can. I started discussing anxiety with my niece when she was 3 or 4, to explain why I couldn't do as much with her as I wanted. And she understood. She's 7 and she accepted that while her family was in the state and I wanted so badly to spend time with her, I had too much anxiety and was scared to leave the house. She was just happy when i was able to spend 30 minutes with them. Discussing anxiety with her at age 3 wasn't age inappropriate. That as well as the emotionally accepting and emphasizing vocalization and productive conversation when she felt intense "negative" emotions that my sister uses, helped her grow into an empathetic 7 year old. My 3 year old nephew, meanwhile, is attempting to understand death and how it relates to him and others. He focuses on a relation and, for instance, repeatedly asks my sister, "Is your dad dead?" He gets stuck on the topic. He's three. So should your discussion about the music video Suicide be age restricted? Should discussion about suicide be age restricted? No. Because it isn't in real life and silence leads to people, children, feeling like they're alone in this. Talking about it can lead to children who have early issues feeling like they can talk about it. If they talk about it, tragedies can be prevented.
RUclipss filtering system is all kinds of messed-up. They rely on bots and then most of the time their "human screenings" for appeals are also done by bots. There are plenty of creators out there who had their appeal quashed faster than it was possible to watch the video in question. I was upset when I saw this video, as I hadn't watched your reaction yet and I thought it had been taken down. I hate to say it, because it shows how bad the system here is, but getting demonitised and age-restricted means you got off lightly in the algorimth. Ironically it's channels like this that are trying to help start the conversation that get struck and not the ones that are actively trying to cause harm, because they know how to game the system so they don't get flagged, where as you are being up-front and honest with your content. Don't lose heart, it's just a small set back. Your content is good and your channel can only get bigger as more people find it. People will still see the video in question as new watchers who like your content will go through your back catalogue.
Maybe, this is different, depending on the country? Because here in Germany neither Ren's video nor your video are restricted. I can see it all, view numbers included.
I think if you have a YT account and logged in (which proves your age somehow), and you have watched one of my videos before then it lets you watch this one. But I can tell by my analytics that hardly anyone has watched it at all in the whole of today (maybe a couple of hundred, versus 1000s that I usually get). Its been restricted, not removed.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial I can see, that for example Becca Doss'reaction to that has an age restriction. An yes, I have an account and I am logged in.
Whats ironic is quite often one can talk about murder or death but not su!c!d#. I think anyone over maybe 10 years old should be able to watch videos such as these and really even then it's up to their parents.
The overlords are assuming everyone is lacking in the ability of analysing subjects or understanding them. It is obvious to anyone who watched the original track or looked at reactions that the message is loud and clear that tomorrow is worth living for. And from the comments I've read in posts, it has been a help to people who have experienced loss and those who have attempted or contemplated taking their own lives. Yet RUclips and other platforms appear to find it fine to promote content of sex change without a thought. As for advertisers taking a stance, just look at the effects of Bud Light, Miller, Gillette or even Wickes recently. I am not judging anyone, but I am saying that the direction the above companies have taken has tanked their share prices and lost them customers. Yet the open discussion of suicide appears to be helping so many people. The easier it is to discuss any matter that is affecting you, with a friend, family member or a complete stranger can only be of benefit. "If only they had told me what was going on", "If only I noticed", "If only I got to them in time"...
I can't remember if it was in a stream or post (couldn't find the post) but Ren said that he got some grief for spelling suicide as "Su!cide" for the title. He said he did that because the original spelling got the video flagged and it would have been restricted. Not sure why just the spelling change made the difference since he said it so many times in the song, but I guess it did. He also was annoyed that suicide was flagged for the title, but murderer wasn't. Which I agree is completely stupid. Personally I don't think any of it should be restricted. A video promoting suicde, talking about ways to do it, ect, should absolutely be restricted. I wouldn't want my 12yr old to find videos like that. I'd be horrified. But these videos, talking about feeling suicidal and dealing with those feelings, wouldn't be a problem to me. If he was thinking about that, I would want him to be able to access the support and understanding that these these kind of videos offer. A lot of young people dont feel they can talk about this stuff with parents or other people in their life, they need support and guidance wherever they can get it. When I was in middle school this stuff would have probably made a huge difference for me as I struggled with suicidal thoughts. As far as advertisers, RUclips is full of crap about what advertisers want and are comfortable with. True crime channels are nearly always demonetized, because the content isn't suitable for advertisers. Because of this, sponsors are a HUGE part of having a successful true crime channel. I think advertisers are perfectly capable of determining what demographics they want to reach. Eleanor Neal's true crime channel has had Disney Plus as a sponsor for petes sake! But according to youtube, an advertiser like that wouldn't want anything to do with that kind of content. It's so dumb.
"To write love on her arms" I had tagged this for Ren as well a while back. #TWLOHA It is a netwprling place . There is a movie. It started years ago on my space. It is for Addiction SUICIDE hope love selfinflicted violence, and deppression. The music backed it. Ren is hope. Do we only here the word after Janice J Jim M Cobaie.... Amy Winehouse etc commit the act. Advisors for treatment centers use it all the time. As for age appropriate....unless a person has had only a genetic preexisting condition.......most folks who consider suicide have seen worse than Ren or anyone could pump out!! Why? Because it is there pain. P.S. DID groups are big on youtube. using trigger disclaimers. I will be sure to have my underage alters leave the room.
It is quite backwards. Ren himself said that he thought it was rubbish that Suic*de had a “trigger warning” while videos that depicted drug use, murder, rape, DV, etc did not ( he DID however appreciate that a source for help was provided along with the warning). That being said, I personally think that if someone is emotionally fragile they would find it helpful to hear the perspective, thoughts, input of someone such as yourself, rather than simply a reaction from a “reactor “. I think that if anyone feels less alone in their struggles ,it’s worth the word. If anyone writes down the number for a S Hotline , it’s worth the word. If anyone cries instead of shoving the overwhelming feelings of hopelessness and isolation down into an abyss, it’s worth the word. If it opens a dialogue where one was needed but missing or unavailable, it’s worth the word. In other words, IT IS WORTH THE WORD. If I’m being honest I don’t think that your content is “marketed” for anyone young enough for advert companies to shy away from sponsorship ( or however it works). And if they are watching then they are also watching things and hearing LOTS of words that are ACTUALLY far more “ influential “ and destructive .Perhaps that’s what YT , and the sponsors should concerning themselves with.
I don't think media platforms realise that blocking peoples access to content that is seen as "taboo" is bad in the long run. I say this because now less people will see something they can relate to and spark a helpful discussion around. Or it may not reach someone who is thinking about going through with the acton themselves, who may find peace in knowing they are not the only one and may not have thought about the impact on the ones they love if they go through with it. Young men are disproportionately represented in successful suicide in the UK alone. These are also likely to be the audience he has captivated, shutting down people from seeing something that may help is the opposite thing youtube should be doing.
The original reaction can still be found on my channel if you want to watch it.
I get that premium exists, but its not leverageable as the ad revenue still eclipses it
If YT is guilty of anything here, its a combination of greed (a basic necessity in our democracy) and inconsistency.
Absolutely! Its a massive systemic issue really, and its not being helped by policies such as this one.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial Yep and 3rd party violence content usually slips by no issue.
I agree that people are being control is hurting people more then helping if anything it drives people not to talk about it
One wonders if the "establishment" wants us scared, anxious and divided. Keeping certain subjects taboo and unspoken keeps the subject in question a thing that isn't spoken about. As Ren himself said, if his song was about murder or violence there wouldn't be a restriction. Makes one wonder.
When i was going through the thoughts myself I wish people would talk about it
That's why rens song touches so many people because he was speaking open and honestly
This really sucks! Your review was the most constructive and pragmatic reviews compared to tons of others that are still being suggested. Sorry, keep fighting!!❤
Thanks Ciaran. My fight continues as hopefully this video suggests. Thanks for the support!
@@TherapistReactsOfficial keep up the hard, honest and relevant work
It was your reaction to this video that really helped me (and how I reacted to it) because you come from a unique perspective being on "the other side" but with more empathy and compassion than I've seen from a lot of other mental health "professionals". We NEED to talk about this and not treat it as a taboo.
Completely agree, thanks for sharing.
I lost 3 male friends to suicide in our early 20s and recently a school friend of my eldest took his own life. I absolutely feel you ❤
@@rosetintedglasses72 I am so sorry for your loss.
That is a really good point. I didn't actually think about what is the youngest age this is happening to, and if that is getting lower over time.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial I remember a statistic, not sure how old this is but it was every 5 days a child 13 and under committed the act. That is absolutely horrifying!
The video trended for 24 hours on release day then dropped off, whether that was a RUclips thing, or a RUclips THING! we will never know
Makes you wonder if RUclips is suppressing Suicide's view numbers....goes to show you that they can lower numbers without listening to content, YET allow garbage videos run numbers up. Suicide has an important message (as do the reactions) to convey. God bless .....keep the honest, heartfelt reactions coming. We value them and value your analysis. Bob Clark
Thanks Bob
I've personally seen the numbers for Ren's video fall (say, go from 650k to 620k a few hours later.) I don't know if that's merging repeated listens or what, but it seems like it's not totally on the up-and-up.
I see it with my own when YT thinks there have been bot views, or views from the same account / IP address etc. Obviously my own channel is waaaaay smaller but percentage wise its probably about the same. I do wonder though if YT can prevent some audiences from seeing it in the first place outside of formally restricting it. I'm not sure.
"YET allow garbage videos run numbers up"
Some of the garbage you mention has been up for years, and has a body count. Anne Riordan covers the topic quite regularly.
Truth
In the radio world if a word or phrase is repeated 3 times in an article or conversation it triggers an alert to something of importance
Not necessarily negative but a topic that is trending, I've heard DJ's and announcers use it for their advantage, pushing a record so to speak. Speech writers I'm sure would know and use it.
Ren might be aware and doing the same thing, maybe.
Never be sorry for having a voice. I read every word, had similar experience and feel pretty much the same way as you do❤.
Not to worry some times a novel is exactly what is needed, i my personal opinion.
Orwellian Newspeak
@@sharonshelton8494 Good name for a band
First, they take your language
I think that your reaction was one of the best ones. Stopping and explaining feelings not lyrics. I think parents have the choice on the videos their kids watch. I ket my 14 year old daughter watch Ren's video and I let her watch your and Knox Hill's reactions. We had a discussion after each one. It opened a conversation that I didn't know how to start without sounding "lecturing".
Good god, what kind of parenting is this?!? Don't you know you're just supposed to park your kid in front of Rick & Morty on tv and call it a day?? ;)
I’m sorry this happened to you….it really is a shame. Thank you for this, it’s so very important ❤
I thought that your video was appropriate and beneficial. This is exactly the kind of “guidance” that i was hoping would not happen with this one. I truly have no notes for you. Best Wishes.
FULLY AGREE.
The ren video trended at 10 for a few hrs then got dumped even thought he had more views the some of the other shit
It literally has more views than his previous 3 releases. There's no lack of push on it. It's doing very well
@@TherapistReactsOfficial other reactors use less restrictive platforms to download content. Then edit and show it on YT for the YT audiences. Patreon, Twitch, Rumble (is highly favored by some)
This censorship has to stop. It doesn't help people struggling with mental health and depression. In fact it just adds to the shame and lack of support that people already experience.
No age restrictions. This is something that needs to be talked about.
I have a child that age to, they really can ask some interesting questions! Thanks for sharing.
The way she worded it struck me as funny, and so I responded (definitely not my wisest moment), "well, no.... but now that you mention it...."
The look of horror that spread over her face was so alarming that I immediately felt guilty and explained that it was just my weird sense of humor and bad timing, lol.

Some people run scared of the actual topic - as a survivor I fully endorse people talking openly about the subject - it may save lives.
I'm sorry to hear this. I saw your reaction and can't think of any reasonable reason for restriction. Don't give up making your videos!!
Loved your review. RUclips needs to loom at how they deal with topics like this. So many can benefit from conversation, like your own. Mental
@noelward1367 I was going to write something along the same lines but you said it for me, except I added a bit😁
"Social media companies are not free speech platforms but private companies where we provide the content (for free) & they use that for marketing" ( and to make money from, a lot of money)
Thanks Barbara. I’m actually in Brighton so I might even run into him!
@@TherapistReactsOfficial Awesome!
The goverment knows that a population divided falls. Why would they want us to heal?
Thanks for this video, I need to use Newpipe to view the mentioned reaction then.
Thanks Mike, and sorry to hear of your loss.
@@TherapistReactsOfficial
Thank You, it was broken for a long time💔but I've manage to bandage it up enough to cope❤🩹.
I think this might be the first but perhaps necessary controversy of this track
I notice they're still advertising on a lot of reaction videos too.
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. You shining a light into dark places makes you a threat to the brainless machine.
TRUTH
Watched your reaction - I have no idea why YT restricted your video. Your reaction was important and YT is being tone deaf and hypocritical.
I'm a suicide survivor and this is exactly why there is so many people who attempt or succeed in taking their own life because it's treated has a taboo subject so we fall through the cracks we are hurting to point we resent being alive we feel completely alone trapped by totally darkness in our minds with constant negative thoughts feeling despair and where told talk to someone anyone but then when someone releases a song which contains the word suicide it gets aged restricted if your reaction video reaches out to someone contemplating suicide and stops them trying then surely that's a good thing
You can't put a price on a person life and by You Tube saying companies won't put their ads on the video then they are making it about revenue and that's more important to them that's a disgrace there shouldn't be an age limit on the video because we know that many children under the age of 18 years old are harming themselves and rate is growing at an alarming rate because of how much pressure society is putting them under so these type of songs are to important to age restrict yes put warnings by all means but stopping people being able to start conversations because it's a difficult topic shouldn't even matter we need to talk about it and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues by doing this is counter productive your doing more harm by trying to censor the word
This subject really gets me annoyed if the ad companies don't like the subject who cares you can't allow this subject to just be swept under the carpet these are real people lives your putting at risk doesn't that not matter more than money guess not
I think the ad companies should pull their heads out and stop trying to tell people what they can and cannot view.
Couldn’t sum it up better myself - absolutely pants!
I found this video first. On to watch the original.
Completely agree.
If the original music video isn't age restricted, then it's imperative that discussion about it is not restricted
Agreed
Im Really sorry this happened to you
I don't think you tube should block, cancel, give strikes etc ! If people don't want to see or hear it they just scroll on by !
How very non-patronizing of you! You must pre-date social media (like me). Heh.
Agreed Graham. Thanks for commenting.
That’s totally bizarre!
Ren himself said that he thought it was rubbish that Suic*de had a
“trigger warning” while videos that depicted drug use, murder, rape, DV, etc did not ( he DID however appreciate that a source for help was provided along with the warning).
They hate anything that heals...
