It's amazing out most of those designs were not far off from the what we ended up with in some way... the baby mac definitely looks a lot like the imac.
Jesse Mills I love the original ad art. It’s a vintage look pen and ink drawing of Isaac Newton sitting under an Apple tree. I wish there was a shirt with that design....May print me one, actually.
The floppy drive was replaced with a CD ROM drive and the monitor was upgraded to a 15” 1024x768 pixel display with translucent blue rounded plastic in 1998 as the iMac.
The LISA was one of the biggest and saddest "flop" stories in Job's history. It was a failed attempt to reconnect with his daughter, Lisa. Except the product failed and made their divide larger.
Really? From what I've read and heard, he was always a bad father and never tried to be close with her, probably felt like he was doing her a favor or making up for everything else by naming a computer after her.
Actually, the iMac G3 as it eventually turned out actually looked pretty similar to the Baby Mac concept. So you could say the iMac G3 was Jobs finally completing the Baby Mac project which was shelved when Jobs left, but done better (colours, translucent sides, etc.).
This was super interesting... even more interesting how everything done back then basically came full circle with the different colors of products, the phone, etc.
I think you could make the case that Apple continued to riff off the Snow White design language throughout most of the '90's. By the time Jobs came back they'd again hit a point of being both mired by past successes (AKA moving beyond that design language) and a complicated/fractured product lineup that broke the earlier design language without wholly replacing it.
I think the Apple Lisa was beautiful. Well, beautiful for a beige box which I’d categorize the Macintosh and Apple II under. The Baby Mac looked like _What if the original iMac was released in the 80’s?_
Are you aware of the internal only Apple future products videos that were produced in the mid ‘90s? I was shown one when I worked for Apple in the ‘90’s, but I’m not sure if they were ever made public. I think people would be quite surprised now if they saw what Apple was dreaming about in 1995. There’s also the original Copland OS, (which I saw just once). Probably the “holy grail” of old Apple stuff has to do with some phone calls, but I’m not going to say publicly exactly what that is. If you have it, you’d know what I’m talking about. Nice videos, btw.
I can't believe how apples whole mindset and morals totally flipped when steve jobs died. Guess thats what happens when you only care about money and not innovation, unlike how apple was defined its whole life up until he wasn't involved in it.
Innovation doesnt happen every single year as the companies like to perpetuate to users. Its made the whole of this consumer mindset believe innovation has to keep on going and going as fast as possible because people are so OCD they cant calm down and wait.
The galaxy note. Steve jobs said theres no need for a stylist and that it's a cash grab, once he died the $100 apple pencil was released. What about all the dongles on the mac book? Theres 4 USB-C ports and you have to buy accessories to change that. How about the removal of the headphone jack on the iPhones? What about the macbook pro 2018? You know what happened there? Apple didn't do the thing that every single laptop maker does and put a protective layer of silicone in their keyboards. What happens is when a SPECK OF DUST gets under your keyboard, your $2,000 laptop becomes completely useless unless you pay $200 for it to be fixed and for it to happen again a day later. Apple never admitted to this fault unlike the exploding Samsung galaxy note 7 and apple did the most duchy move when they called the silicone layer thats necessary to keep your keyboard from breaking an "innovative technology to quiet your keyboard". Not only did they do that, but they outright sold thousands of defective computers with cut corners without ever admitting to their mistake. Innovation might not take a year, but they should stop focusing on taking out basic parts of hardware and never admitting their faults.
Collin Mcmeeken Ever use one? They’re awesome. BTW, most top tier styli are in that price range. I did some research on Wacom tablet/ styli and ended up with the iPad and Apple Pencil combo.
Usually many unreleased designs or products are still patented just in case of insider leaks. Even if it isn't the case, I don't see Apple doing us a favor.
No true tech geek/guru should ever accidentally say CTR instead of CRT. It's not just a mistake... it makes it seem like he's just reading a script, but doesn't actually know the content. Even if it was written CTR on his notes, there's no way a real techie wouldn't automatically correct that to CRT without even realizing it said CTR. CTR just makes zero sense to a real techie.
“Most of these products were designed in 1982, when … Apple was in a tough predicament because with the exception of the aging Apple //e, …” The Apple //e wasn’t released until 1983! How could it be aging in 1982?
What a waste of time and Apples to not release some of those, but there was a big competition which I remember and I was in the profession some time and thought it was a mad profession. Apple won on the type setting technology which spread to the whole planet and it's printers and publishers. I talk about what went on paper and it's gone now, but still seen as an aspect on the internet pages. The funniest thing in that story is Microsoft Word. My path is pocket computers and other alternative computers which didn't include Microsoft or Apple. Older PC's got so cheap that we didn't need to pay for many of those. We got home computers in loads as well. I paid less than £200 for each of my favorites. The cheapest computer today would be some old crap thrown out and someone put Linux on it. So much for design plans.
I guess it's part of the process of design. There will always be wate like that. Buy that doesn't mean the effort is fully lost. Newer designers at Apple might be able to use it in their own designs.
I don’t have time to read through the nearly 400 comments to see if someone else noticed this but at 3:47 if you quickly glance across Steve’s wrist you could *ALMOST* mistake it for the Apple Watch. Lol
You're talking about the mid 80s LaserWriter, but then show pictures of the early nineties StyleWriter, a dumb (no PostScript) inkjet. PostScript was about vector-defined typefaces, not antialiasing! Antialiasing was a display technique to smooth jagged edges of vector-defined shapes. Man, history is not in terribly good hands. 😪 Enjoyed the video overall, though! Miss that sweet Snow White design! Is Jony Ive asleep at the wheel? They need to bring frog design back.
Oh, and thanks for reminding me of the awful John Sculley years. He ALMOST makes Tim Cook look good, although Tim Cook similarly has zero vision. I'm sad for Apple.
CRT is cathode ray tube or something. That’s how old school “boxy” TVs and computer monitors used to be, before flat screens were introduced. I don’t know what CTR is.
Maybe make the video 2 minuets longer, to add in a few pauses, so that the listener has time to take in the information you are taking about, in the video. I know it’s a big trend now a days to talk as much as possible in a short amount of time as possible, but it makes it really hard for the people watching your videos to take in the information you are distributing. So if you point of a video is to get people to listen and take in what you are saying, then please make the video in a way so it makes it possible to do so, yes it’s maybe 10 minuets of extra work, but the end result is a million times better, than what everyone else is doing. It’s not only good for the listener, but it will benefit you in the end, because more people will want to watch your videos, and listen to what your have to say.
I'm sure everyone here knows what he is talking about. Hell, there many criticizing him over small tidbits such as how he said "CTR", instead of "CRT".
