There is a new custom preset available that will tune the X2GS EQ to match it with the original SC55 as good as possible! I will try it out soon and upload a new comparison.
Overall, I think the comparison reinforces the SC-55's status as a reference synth. With it, everything lines up exactly correct for the ear : tones, dynamics, effects - because that's what the composer heard when they composed it. That ultimate coherence can only be attained by using the original equipment (or exact copy thereof). However, even despite that, the choice is not clear-cut. The X2GS does sound nicer in some ways: some patches, some contexts, some games. And, equally importantly, it has significantly greater polyphony than the SC-55. When handling the more advanced and demanding MIDI compositions, that can matter.
@@Megatog615 The story is that in the 90s Dream made samples of the SC55 and illegally sold them in their chips without mentioning Roland. Some years later Roland noticed what Dream was doing and they made a license agreement which allowed Dream to use the sounds. But the thing is that the SC55 isn't just a stupid sample player, it uses many parameters to create the sounds. DREAM just uses samples.

The Dreamblaster GS might have similar samples but the effects are very different
according to the creator, they are even higher quality samples than the SC-55

You kind of robbed the X2GS with a too dry and boxy (or maybe just thin, as the highs sound OK) eq preset..
