My aunt and uncle lived in Allen, Saskatchewan! Just a hop, skip and a jump East of Saskatoon. Grew up washing a cream separator - always had to make sure the proper ring was on the bottom! Ours was not electric, we had to turn the handle at just the right speed to make sure the cream wasn't too thin. Fun times, and a great unit to have with milk producing animals around.

In my childhood days we used the cream separator and done the milk from 30 cows. Westhaliai is the brand name for separators and milking supplies even today. DeLavel is a company that make them to. You brought me back to my childhood days.

Born in Maine but moved to Connecticut at age 3. I thought milk came from a factory. We went back to Maine every summer. My dad took me to his uncles in the country, maybe 1959. I was 5. Across the dirt road was a old working farm. Zip was the farmers name. He showed me around and then I watched him milk a cow. He gave me a ladle from the bucket and said try it. It was warm from the cow but was so Good. THEN, we went inside and he poured the milk in to this big round silver thing. Milk came out one spout and cream out the other. It was a incredible, mind boggling day I still remember 62 years later.

I think that cream separator is actually a Vega separator unit mated with a Westphalia motor unit but it looks to be an awesome machine. Looking forward to seeing more videos of the products you make from the cream as Julia corners the market for goat milk products in your area. Great stuff always, love seeing your family grow, learn and develop your off-grid homestead, thanks for sharing your life with us.

Takes me back to when I was a boy and we went to my brother in laws dairy farm. They used to separate cream from the milk to send to the butter factory. The milk was used to supplement feed pigs. Same type of machine but the cleaning of the cups was a big deal. Had to use a lot of boiling water for hygiene and cleanliness. Have fun and thanks for the trip down memory lane. The 1960's were a long time ago.

As a little kid in the 50’s..we had a separator but it was a hand crank..it was like starting out in 10th gear..slow and hard at first..then gradually I would get it up to speed and open the valve..it worked well and was over 75 years old..the plates or cones were nickel plated..the whole unit was 4.5 feet high..there were platform below to hold the milk and cream vats.. after each use we took it apart and cleaned it right away..we milked morning and late afternoon...we made cheese from the milk and ice cream with the cream..we had two cows..we had a small farm..but I never forget the separator.. I was important...the unit weight was over 150 pounds or about 75 kilos.. nice to see you all enjoying old ways.. thanks

like to seek such great success. You have a young budding entrepreneur. One suggestion I will make is purchase a small hand help manual goat milking pump. I am not expert but saw it used on another u tube video. He popped on the suction cups over goats teats, then gave the hand held unit a few pumps to create vacuum and milk poured out. No need for power and super fast. He also had small room specifically for milking, a little elevated wooden stand, feed bowl at one end, wood bar to lock head in once goat starts feeding, hook up cups and in minutes container full of milk. Your living in Paradise.

Let the machine run for about 60 seconds then turn milk flow on..We have a few manual separators, we live on cream

On our farm mid to late forties into the fifties, we had a herd of about 50 jersey cows and separated all the milk. The cream went to a butter factory and the skim milk went to pigs and calves. But for the house we had a specially tested cow that we hand milked and to get cream we would let the milk settle in a refrigerator at least overnight and skim the cream off the top, using the cream and skimmed milk for our family needs. This created a much thicker cream. Cleaning the separator was a chore and we used sodium hypochlorite (hypo for short) and very hot water as the approved cleaning agent.

This should go well with Julia's goat cream. Take some ripe blackberries. Wash them well and place in a saucepan. Let them cook in their own juice for 5-10 minutes on low heat with a sprinkle of sugar. Leave to cool. Serve with custard as we do in Ireland. The goat cream would be worth trying out with blackberries or indeed any wild berry.
