LisaR- It's interesting that I've been knitting since Kindergarten , yet I hadn't used Cable cast on in years.. I can think of several times I should have ;) Your videos are the "Gold Standard "for Knitting techniques, in my opinion. I truly appreciate how You deliver the verbal & visual content with consistent clarity. It's a gift to the entire community. Thank you ! ❤❤❤
Like many others have said, if I’m looking for a video to learn a knitting technique, if your name shows up, you are my go-to. I also recommend your videos often to other knitters. Thank you for your help!
Exactly what I needed! Thank you for always getting right to the point! I also appreciate you explaining why this method might be called for. That was helpful.
Thank you for this video. I do have a pattern that calls for this cast on. I knew you would probably have it. You are one of my Go To's for any knitting I have questions about.
I always use this cast on - tip - before you pull the yarn tight, put your needle behind the stitch, then pull the yarn tight. ❤❤ Taught at Junior school when I was 9yrs old many decades ago.
Thank you for your tutorial podcasts. I’m a newbie knitter and when I get stuck on a stitch you are the first place I look for help. Keep up the great job.
Thank you, Staci! I keep hoping to find one of your videos when I Google a particular knitting technique, because I know they're always good, well-explained, and succinct, without lots of unnecessary fluff. I record video tutorials (not on knitting, sadly) for work and your videos are exactly what a good video should be.
Cable cast on is my usual - I use it for everything. My mother taught it to me when I was 6, and I didn't know there was another until I was 66. It can be flexible and stretchy if you don't pull it tight, and I find it nice and fast, too
Thank you! I am beginning a Project that says this cast on isn't essential; but since this kind of cast on was mentioned, I figured it must be preferred. I KNEW that you would know!
I was reading through instructions on a project I intend to start soon, and I was so confused about what they wanted me to do, lol! Not confused any more; this was very helpful, thank you, Staci.
Thank you for this video! I'm starting a new project which called for this type of casting on, and I always know just where to start looking when I jave questions with any thing new. Thanks again!
I just want to offer a tip: when I do this cast on, I put the right hand needle in place then tighten the yarn. That way you don't have to force the tip into place.
Absolutely love your videos! I’m learning how to knit by watching RUclips videos and you’re my favorite one. I do think your videos could be a little closer to your hands. But either way thank you!
Thank you for your videos. Since I knit with the yarn in my left hand it's much easier for me to do this cast-on with a crochet hook. Just an idea for other "continental" style knitters. Your video taught me to twist the stitch before putting it on the needle... will try that next time! Thank you!
Thank u !! Great Video. I like that your videos get right to it. Plus you always give the "why's"... I know i said it before but as a newbie i like to know the whys. I was glancing through an edgings/finishing book and saw a Picket edge & the pattern called for a Cable cast on. I only know the long tail cast on lol..i wanna use it for everything lol. I cant wait to try the cable cast on..im gonna knit a swatch of the picket edge now.. i get to try something new..yeahh
Yes, your slip knot counts as your first stitch. Given you asked a year ago, you've likely already found that answer, but for anyone else looking... Your skip knot is the first stitch.
Do you have a recommendation for a bind off that would coordinate well with this cast-on? Thank you -- I used this cast on for a project that calls for a twisted (not "twisty") bind off, and I cannot find anything like this cast on. It's very pretty. Thank you for your videos -- I've used them often!
Hi Staci! I hope you see this as not sure where else to ask my question and your YT channel is my very favourite go to for help. I’m knitting my first sweater which is a sleeve to sleeve pattern. My directions say once finished with the increase for underarms to “cast on st st at beginning of next two rows”. It was suggested by a friend that I use the cable cast on as its neater and to start from the left side of my work (where the yarn tail isn’t). Help please? Can you show how to add cable cast on to needles on a project that’s already been started please? 😅 🙏🏼
As always, I love your videos. I am fixing to start an mkal and need to know cable cast on and short rows. I watched both your videos and don’t feel overwhelmed.
This pattern calls for cable cast on with #8 US needle and row of knit stitches with #15 needle. I'm having some trouble pushing the #15 needle through the cast on. Would it be a good idea to do the cable cast on stitches loosely?
@Glassfox9 I don't have any good photos of it available right now, but if you go to knitty dot com and search for "cable cast on", they have a photo tutorial with nice shots of how it looks on a knitted piece. :) Sorry - RUclips won't let me give you a direct link here.
VeryPink Knits does the knitty dot com cable cast on twist the stitch as you do, or not twist it? I thought their picture looked a little loose/sloppy... I’m starting a shawl that calls for this cast on and uses some small beads. What do you think? Thanks!
I've seen another tutorial for the cable cast on that doesn't twist the stitches, i.e. when they transfer the new stitch from the right needle to the left, they do it from the other side without turning the needle as much. Are both of these valid ways to do cable cast on?
Question: if the pattern says to cast on 3 St, will you have 3 or 4 loops on your hook, when you're done? If you have 4, what do you do with the extra loop? Thanks 😊 Raw beginner knitter here😅
If the pattern tells you to cast-on 3, you will have 3 loops on your needle. If you're using a slip knot to start the cast-on (most cast-ons do) the slip knot will be one of the 3 loops on the needle.
Just ran across a pattern that uses this. I watched a couple of videos about it, I do have a question though. Does it matter which way you put the loop you draw up on to the left hand needle? The other video did it opposite than you.
Jennifer Schwerin - it does ultimately matter in the look of the cast-on, but as long as you're consistent and you like the look of what you're creating, it doesn't really matter.
Loved this video, any recommendations on how to bind off to replicate the look of the cast on? my pattern just says to bind off knitwise with 1 size larger needles.. thank you in advance!
The color/brightness is good on my computer and on other folks'...you may want to check the brightness settings on your computer. Additionally, this is an advanced cast-on, and in the video I assume that you're already comfortable with casting-on and the knit stitch. Sorry it didn't work for you.

Stacy, Thank you for your videos. You are the best knitting teacher and I’ve improved so much with your help.

Thank you! I can’t believe this video is 12 yrs old! I need this stitch for a sock pattern and I knew you’d have the solution.
You're welcome! The video might be 12 years old, but the technique is the same. Glad I could help!
Thank you! I am beginning a Project that says this cast on isn't essential; but since this kind of cast on was mentioned, I figured it must be preferred. I KNEW that you would know!

Great video from my favorite knitting tutorials guide! Thank you!!
Thanks a lot for your videos. I watch them often to have a quick tipp how to knit spacial things.
Thank you for all your videos! So clear. I send many people to Verypink now!
Thank you for this video! I'm starting a new project which called for this type of casting on, and I always know just where to start looking when I jave questions with any thing new. Thanks again!
I really love this channel
I commonly do not tighten the stitch until I have inserted the needle between the two stitches. This makes the cast on a tad looser but also faster.
You are my go to for so many things, you explain things so well, thankyou!
Thank you for your great instructions. Brief and exact so we can get on with our knitting!
I just want to offer a tip: when I do this cast on, I put the right hand needle in place then tighten the yarn. That way you don't have to force the tip into place.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you very much Staci.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. As usual a great tutorial. 🧶🩷

I find the cast on to be just as fast as the other two-needle cast ones I do, once I got into the rhythm of it. Thanks for the clear video :)
I like that you explain why it's used!
Thank you for this video. I recently had to learn the cable cast on and this was very helpful.
I love your tutorials 🥰
Thank you. I had no idea and the pattern directions were no help.

Is the slip-stitch counted as a stitch?
I would like to know also!
Yes, your slip knot counts as your first stitch.
Given you asked a year ago, you've likely already found that answer, but for anyone else looking... Your skip knot is the first stitch.
If you put the needle through before you tighten you save a step and it goes faster

Thanks so much for this. I needed to learn this cast on for a pic of edge and this was very clear and simple.
Thank you for your help on this!

Very nice, thanks! Would you also show us what it looks like on a piece that you've knitted?
What is that yarn you are using? I love the colors!!!
Thank you! I,love your videos, they are so helpful & your hands are so pretty!
As always, I love your videos. I am fixing to start an mkal and need to know cable cast on and short rows. I watched both your videos and don’t feel overwhelmed.
JadedDragonStar Are you doing lolo’s lucky star mkal? (That’s why I’m here.)
stockinettestitch yes, actually I am.

Which side of a wrap would you pick up (front or back) if the pearl side is the RS right side of a sweater?
is the tail on the right or left side of a cable cast on
So simple, thanks!
Is there a cable bind off or what do you suggest?

I've never worked it that way, you may want to swatch with the different styles side-by-side so you can see the difference.
@@verypinkknits Thanks, I will try out both. The Vogue Knitting book describes your method by the way!

The background is so bright and the camera too far. Not good!
