This might be my favorite Stan Rogers. So beautiful. It's like he has writer's block and the candle is the only one constantly providing. He feels bad for its efforts, so he made this tribute. The last lyric makes me cry😭 "one more candle flickers out, the night is turning grey, I just can't watch the dying flame, I have to walk away" I never cried for candles before!
I had a rough day, Make that a week. But some how this long dead man can spin weeks of emotion in just 7 minutes. I don't care what his intentions were. The song means something to me. And I am beyond thankful for this song, its writer, and The person who choose to share it. I may be Nova Soctian, But I challenge you to show me a person of earth who honestly listens to this, and feels nothing.
Almost a decade after, I can still read your comment and smile in knowingness about exactly what you're talking about. I hope you're doing well, good stranger.
The calmness of this song shows the true robustness of this man's wonderous voice....amazing. I wish Stan could return for just one more cup of coffee.
I was luck to see Stan and his band at a coffee house on Bay St. in Toronto many years ago now. I will never forget that night listening to his music and drinking apple cider. I still have all of his vinyl lp's. Such a powerful voice from a gentle good human. RIP Stan.
Thinking of Stan Rogers who died so tragically so many years ago, trying to save the lives of others. I just shared this song in remembrance of my Mom and Dad and other people I've lost.
I have known and loved Stan's music since the 70s, but this is the first time I've ever heard this song. Somewhere in this house there is a scribbled thank-you note from Stan's wife in reply to a 'fan letter' I sent him back then, when both we and the world were still young. I must send a link to this to my son.He is almost 22; I'm almost 70. But Stan and his music are eternal, and it is up to us to pass it on. Buy another candle, buddy. Keep the Flame alive.
A few years ago, I "became lucid" in a dream. I was at a Stan Rogers concert, and he was singing The Mary Ellen Carter - not even my favourite of his tunes. I listened for a few seconds, and then woke up. Obviously disappointed, I groaned and closed my eyes. Just as soon as I drifted off, I was once again lucid and somehow had returned to the show. Still listening to the same tune, I thanked my luck and watched the performance and then, once again, I woke up. Truly dismayed this time, it took me a little longer to relax. When I did, I found myself back at the show once again! Given the nature of this event, I'd say you've got a pretty good shot of seeing him perform. Apparently, he's still touring...
I stumbled upon Stan quite by accident...I am a fan of John Gorka, and he did a very rare cover of the song "Lockkeeper", which I loved, so I got on here and found a bunch of Stan's music...this song, is absolutely gorgeous...one of the best voices I have ever heard...thanks for posting!
It's never too late to tuck into his brilliance. For those of us who heard him from the beginning, it's important for new ears to find his music....and share.
Beautiful! I found Stan Rogers “First Christmas” song on RUclips after having the song go around in my head. I had to figure out who it was, and it was Stan Rogers!
His music, his voice is like earth... or a great stone mountain. If humanity, if art can strive for an even higher place then the mere effort of a mortal, for me at least, Stan is that striving.
One of my favorites for sure. Wish I could have seen him perform live. I don't normally make comparisons between the brothers as they have their own unique styles and I love them both. But I would love to hear Garnet do this one.
Beautiful song I've bonded with one on one many times. Had definitely helped me. Not to take away from Gordon but I believe stand had him beat had he lived!
I would have never known a song about writers block could be so beautiful. Stan was incredible.
This, in my opinion , is one of the most beautiful songs ever written
I agree
While listening to this tonight, I lit a candle for Stan.
30 years without you..
Rest in Peace...
shit, that means I'm almost 40...

If I am fortunate enough to get to heaven, the first thing I want to do is listen to Stan play.

Check on Nathan Rogers as well. Stan's son. The apple hasn't fallen too far from the tree.

Can I slap whoever disliked this song? Or maybe hold their hand and make them listen so they can appreciate this masterpiece of a song.
